INDIANAPOLIS — When player workouts begin here at the NFL combine this weekend, John Elway will have particular interest in the crop of quarterbacks.

The Broncos will add two quarterbacks to the roster this offseason, through either the draft or free agency, to join starter Tim Tebow and second-year player Adam Weber in training camp. Elway said he'll pay particular attention to mechanics like throwing motion and footwork when quarterbacks go through their drills on Sunday.

"I don't know if we're looking for one like Tim or an ordinary drop-back [passer] or somewhere in between," Elway said Friday morning in his press conference at Lucas Oil Stadium. "I think that until we find out the interest out there, it's going to be hard to fill those spots, but I think that when I look at Tim and I look at our offense, we can do it with either one. Whether it be a guy like Tim or more of a drop-back kind of guy, either one is going to be able to fit."
Among other highlights from Elway's press conference:

    • Elway said he has not personally spoken to safety Brian Dawkins about Dawkins' future plans. Dawkins will be an unrestricted free agent, and is also considering retirement. "I'm not speaking for him, but he's probably going through a tough time," Elway said. "Having been a football player, I know how tough it is to make that decision when you're getting close to the end of your career to know if you want to continue playing or not. To this point haven't had a chance to talk to him."

    • Elway said the team has been in touch with agents for the team's 17 unrestricted free agents. Elway said he hopes to have several of those players re-signed before the free agency period opens on March 13. Among the top priorities are kicker Matt Prater and defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley.

    • Elway watched this year's top two quarterback prospects, Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III, play in person last fall, and both made a big impression on Elway. "Two unbelievable prospects coming out," Elway said. "Tremendously mature, intelligent guys that I look at as those two are going to have a lot of success in the NFL."

Po,po,po,po,poker face......... UDFA for camp/P-squad comp with Weber and older vet for backup/mentoring. He's said the same thing last year. Don't be fooled by Elway's "hard count". Remember he made a living looking people off where he was actually going.

I wouldn't take one in the first 2 rounds, but in the 4th, and later on in the draft, sure, depending who they like.

Hard to say.. too many needs on the team.

I expect them to trade down more than a few times to increase the number of picks...

if they do that... I could see them taking a backup QB..

but if they were to stand pat...

we dont have the luxury of using a pick on a backup QB when vets and UFA will be available.

We may see Some vet QB's cut/available after the draft...
once teams pick new QB's in the early rounds.

Not gonna happen. Elway clearly stated that they won't bring in a QB for the purposes of being "a backup". They want everybody to compete.

What is really funny is that all of these Elway articles with different headlines are coming from the same 2 or 3 quotes. All he said was:

We already knew this. Not anything new.

True, but they're not gonna break the bank bringing in a QB either, because of other more pressing needs. So once u knock out guys that are gonna command "starting" salaries, like prime F/A's and 1st or second round draft picks. Your left with 2nd and 3rd tier F/A's, low draft and UDFA development picks. Also take into account what 1st tier F/A QB is gonna want to come here and deal with the nightmare? Every bad pass, play, game and the Tebow chants will rain down sooooo much worse than they did for KO. It's a tough situation to deal with for a QB. So whoever thinks they can come in here and beat Tebow out, they better play their A+++ game every week for 16+ weeks.

Breaking news Elway says we will have 4 qbs in camp. Not confirmed if Elway could be one of them.<--- that would be a story worth reading

                        1 TEbow
                        2 Henne Johnson gGeraard
                        3 weber
4 who cares just don't waste a pick before 5th rd unless weber has shown nothing

Sure. I'm not saying they should try to trade up for a Luck, Griffin, etc. Realistically, we're probably going to get a QB somewhere between the 3-5th round(Unless a guy like Foles or Osweiler falls to our pick in the 2nd).

That way, we can use FA and our first few picks in the draft to address our major needs and still allow us to bring in a competent rookie/vet to compete with Tebow. If Tebow wins the job in camp and and plays well, problem solved. If a vet/rookie/weber beats out Tebow and plays well, depending on how well they play and how many games we win, problem solved. If all of them crap out this next season, THEN we can go all out on a top QB next year.

Either way, we do need to protect ourselves and bring in atleast one more prospect with good upside at QB to compete, just in case Tebow doesn't progress.

This piece is remarkably similar to an article written last year, at about this time. Heck, I think the title may even be the same. I would not be suprised if a QB is not drafted, but rather a FA and another UDFA QB are brought in
