  • Broncos’ Jack Del Rio A Player’s Coach!!

Im loving our DC more and more!! The defensive players on the Broncos are undoubtedly excited about their new defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio. Del Rio played in the NFL for eleven years so he’s widely considered a “player’s coach.”

“There’s nothing like having a coach that actually played the game so he knows what’s going on in there,” linebacker Joe Mays said after Tuesday’s practice. “He knows that things may not work out the exact way that you’re coaching. Sometimes he let’s us go out there and just play ball. Whether it’s going out there and doing what he tells us to do or if we just go out there and play it the way we see it, we’re never wrong as long as we’re all on the same page.”

That’s got to be a great feeling for the players, especially for the veteran linebackers who are encouraged to drop back a little more and make plays.

“I think the biggest thing with him is I like the fact that he loves his players to be playmakers,” linebacker Wesled Woodyard said. “We might make a mistake, but he came up to us and told us, ‘Hey, go make a play. I’m not going to take your playmaking abilities away from you.’ Him being a linebacker, he understands the way we feel and what we see.”

Del Rio was a third round draft pick out of USC in the 1985 draft. He was an NFL journeyman playing for the New Orleans Saints, Kansas City Chiefs, Dallas Cowboys, Minnesota Vikings, and Miami Dolphins, but in a way, perhaps that is what makes him such a great defensive coach. He’s seen enough styles, enough coverage schemes and alignments to know what works.

Del Rio can often be seen rolling up his sleeves and actually getting into stances during practice. He’s a leader by showing and by telling.

“Just having that defensive minded guy who has played the game just out there showing you how to play defense. It’s pretty sweet,” Mays said.

        Love this hiring soooo much.

When we first got him I remember hearing about players hating him because he was picking favorites or something along those lines.

Good to hear it sounds like those were just rumors. Fox and JDR will re build the ORANGE CRUSH!

I was bummed when D Allen left, but that went away when JDR came on board! I absolutely love this hire. I just hope he stays here for awhile.

I was stoked about hiring JDR, but at the same time, if we have even moderate success on D this year, his name is going to be one of the top names discussed for filling vacant head coaching slots.

I've been trying to avoid thinking about that, but you're almost certainly right. If we have a good year, is he going to stick around? As many have said before, we need some freakin' stability at our coaching positions.

you know.. I really think his intention is to stick around for awhile... I say this as he did relocate his whole family (including his highschool kids) I don't think he would have picked up and moved like that had he no intention of staying planted for at least a while

I hope that's the case... I think I remember reading an article about Champ actually posing that question to JDR when he arrived, but can't for the life of me remember the source or the response (if it was given).

I wasn't. We were still a pretty terrible defense statistically. Better than 2010, but still below average.

I know he was a rookie coordinator, but the defensive gameplan in the playoff game against the pats was awful. It seemed like he spent more time preparing for coaching interviews than the gameplan.

He was a huge step up from what we had, but that's more of an indictment on the previous DC's than anything else. I don't think he was bad, but JDR is a significant upgrade. And I'll take it.
