An elite LT can neutralize an elite pass rusher. An average LT will find himself on skates against an elite pass rusher almost always. U can look at his sack and holding rate but when the last 2 QB's can't get rid of the ball, some ground is gonna be given up somewhere. Clady can pretty much neutralize any elite pass rusher and usually does consistently. We have decent rushers in our division and an elite level LT is definitely a high commodity.

Colin Cowherd pointed out once that having an elite LT isn't as big a deal as having an elite pass rusher or cornerback, not to mention quarterback. He made a pretty good argument for it. With Manning at quarterback, the Broncos can probably afford to risk losing Clady.
I will have to disagree respectfully with that statement. Maybe if you have a couple game managing average qb's that you can plug in without losing a step then okay. But when your season and hopes rest on your HOF qb, especially when comig off injury, I personally believe whoever is protecting his blind side is the most important person on the field next to the qb. He definitley ranks up there. Put it this way, who would be a bigger loss for the season, Manning or Doom. To me the answer is definitely Manning, though Doom would be huge as we have seen. I personally believe the LT Positition is huge for us. And while I like Harris when healthy, he has proven over the last couple of years that health can be an issue with him, I wouldn't want to rely on him on the blind side for the full year. I don't disagree with the Broncos move here cause they in essence have this and next year to do something. But I do believe that whoever is going to be in that position should be a HUGE CONCERN for us moving forward. My Boss is a Jewish CarpenterComment

This situation is Moo.
A cow's opinion. It doesn't matter.
Why?
He's got one paid season left. No matter what it will be a set amount. If he plays hard nosed football and sets his role. He'll get the pay he wants. Period.
If he doesn't we'll explore other options. Its the name of the businessComment

Broncos LT Ryan Clady reported rejected the Broncos five-year, $50 million contract offer due to concerns on the guarantees over the first three years. The $28 million guaranteed over the first three years wouldn't put Clady in the same ballpark as the $37 million in Browns LT Joe Thomas' contract. The Clady camp believes his production, when healthy, has been on par with that of Thomas and Dolphins LT Jake Long. The Broncos can wield the franchise tag next offseason.

Clady might be thinking that with Manning behind him, he might have a career season. And it is reasonable logic. On the other hand, if his production is on par with his last couple seasons, it could come back to haunt him for not scooping up the deal offered.
In the end, Clady will probably get what he wants. The beatings will continue until morale improves....Comment

Nor do I think we should.
The only that could possible bite us with the current path of negotiations is if another OT less talented then Clady/Thomas/Long somehow manages to get a even bigger contract out of their team. This actually could happen if the salary cap goes up allot. Not likely and I like what the FO is doing but imo that is the only risk we take doing it the way we are doing.
Besides my point above worst case scenario is we pay him under 4 mil this year and next year we pay him 10 mil then the next year we give him the same money as Thomas.
IMO the downside of that path for Clady is far bigger then it is for us. What if he gets hurt? What is he has a bad year? What if someone else steps up and shows they can play as well as him in that time (not likely but about as likely as my point above)?Comment

If Clady suffers another injury, he's going to lose money over this. Remember last year when Orton was reluctant to do the deal with Miami because he wanted to hit free agency where he could get more money? It was a gamble that backfired miserably. If Clady gets hurt again, this might backfire on him too.sigpic

Elway said his biggest priorties in building the team were..
- QB
- Pass Rusher
- LT
- CB
Don't remember the order though.
As for Clady, if he puts up an elite season then maybe he'll get it but 5/50 with half of it guaranteed is a very good offer.Comment

Well, I'm a little disappointed, but he's decided to turn down a generous offer and gamble that he has a year that will cement his price at something closer to what he wants. It's his prerogative to do so, I suppose, and with Peyton back there he has an excellent chance to make it happen. But at the moment there is no way he deserves to be paid like the top LT in the league, because as much as I love Clady it's been a while since that 0.5 sack rookie season. I'm actually kinda glad that Elway and the front office were smart enough to end negotiations once it became clear he wanted a lot more than it was reasonable to give him.Comment
