  • NFL.com: Reports that NYG are working out McGahee & Brandon Jacobs

So I just read the headlines that McGahee is working out with the NYG. I recall hearing something about not being able to sign a player from an upcoming opponent within a certain number of days/ weeks. Would McGahee not qualify?

    Article: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap100...willis-mcgahee

Also curious as to peoples thoughts on the potential of McGahee running against us.

Other RB's NYG worked out: Beanie Wells and Jonathan Dwyer

As soon as they mentioned on the broadcast that they will bring in a veteran RB I thought of McGahee.
Giants must have some cap issues to have such a poor stable of backs

Not really a result of their cap. They tried to rely on a young running back who apparently has a fumbling issue. Which this isn't their first go around. This is the same coaching staff that helped Tiki Barber with his fumbling issues.

David Wilson is a solid player, just can't hold onto the ball and we are seeing it happen a lot now with rookie/2nd year players. They are used to the way defenders go for the ball.

I think they'll sign Willis but it won't really put their run game where they'd like it.

Ehh. I would be more scared of the Giants if it was David Wilson starting.

Well I look at it like this:
1.Jacobs- there is plenty of tape on him with the NYG-Men. A good thing that is. Staff could rewind a few seasons and focus on what he does and doesn't do.

          2. McGahee- we know he's a fumbler. Any player that shows a knack for puttin the ball on the ground, will be exploited for that weakness. We also know him very well. How he tips run or pass, etc.....

          Neither one presents a problem.

Even if he did get to sign - I would still consider that an advantage for Denver. Remember what happened in the game on Thursday? Manning used Baltimore's spy knowledge against them on that one Julius Thomas TD. He audibled with that unique signal - which Doom and Stokes probably told Balt what it meant - but Manning the genius he is - used it against them.

Same would go for NYG I imagine. I'm quite sure Manning's signals are not decipherable. Like in baseball - all you have to do is change the "indicator signal" which is a signal that alerts the team to watch for the real sign after the indicator signal.

like for instance - 'hurry hurry' might mean go to your check down route but ONLY if the indicator signal was given earlier in the 'set'. Say the indicator signal is Manning saying 'Buffalo'. You might hear Manning say 'Buffalo' before one play - then 'Hurry Hurry' and that means go to your checkdown.

BUt the next play he might say 'Hurry Hurry' but he didn't say 'Buffalo' during set - so hurry hurry doesn't mean anything.

OR - maybe his signals are more complicated than that - either way - It's never been a problem for Manning during all his years in the NFL. He still is able to out smart defenses on a consistent basis. And if a defense wants to gamble on what they think a signal means, they probably will get bit - and if they don't - Manning will get them on the next time he calls that signal.

Manning is such a cerebral gamer - I love that about him. Obviously he's not the physical specimen he used to be, but his mind game is as sharp as it ever was both in general game play and psychology even.

I hope McGahee gets a job somewhere - he can help some team somewhere. I don't want to see NYG use him for his knowledge on the Broncos then cut him loose though - he's worth more than that.
The beatings will continue until morale improves....

WM would fit the giants style well. he has something left in the tank, i believe. fumble issues, well, that is part of the equation. my gut is they take jacobs, due to his knowledge of the O/team. but he is SLOW. he is better in the short term but long term, WM is their answer for this season-i feel.

We got rid of fumbles to get fumbles...
Willis is good, but he wouldn't make me confident if I was a Giants fan

I am not sure about that. Willis is a good power runner when he is healthy. He also had some good catches last season. That said even if the Giants were to sing him today it wouldn't give him a ton of time to learn the playbook.

What I am having a difficult time finding is information on limitations of signing an opponents player. There was a comment made either in one of the forum posts or on NFLN that there is some sort of rule about signing another teams player within X number of days. Would that apply to Willis' case or no?

That only applies to our Practice Squad. They can't sign one of OUR practice squad players to THEIR active roster any later than 7 days out from a head to head matchup, I believe. A free agent, such as McGahee is, can sign with whoever he wants and whoever wants him. We could cut a player on Wednesday and if he clears waivers the Giants could sign him on Friday.

They are working out WM the week they play the Broncos. hmmmmm imagine that. Probably a pretty smart move on their part, I think WM if totally healthy could help them out alot and I'm sure he would love to put it to us after we let him go like we did. Good luck Willis, just not this week.

I don't think this has anything to do with who they're playing this week; the Giants just need a capable RB from the available FAs. New York basically lost last night's game because of the problems with their current running backs--Wilson couldn't hold on to the ball to save his life, Andre Brown is hurt, and so they were stuck playing their third-stringer, Scott, who is very inexperienced and made several HUGE mistakes, including his gaffe in deflecting an Eli Manning pass that was popped up in the air and then intercepted, essentially sealing the win for the Cowboys. The Giants are 0-1 because they don't have a competent RB on their active roster right now, so they're looking to sign whoever is available.

I literally had a dream about my friend saying the Giants need to get Brandon Jacobs again last night. That's crazy.

On NFLN Radio, Giants fans have talking about their lack of quality depth at RB all Summer.
