  • John Elway: The Quarterback Version of Dick Butkus

Very cool read, gives some good insight as to why elways stats were seemingly average in his first 10 years but was still a one man gang of sorts. Check it out!

The consensus view on John Elway is clear. He was the greatest draft prospect ever, a league MVP, a two-time Super Bowl champion, a Hall of Famer, and one of the most clutch quarterbacks in football history. But that’s not necessarily what the numbers say. In my quarterback ranking system, which rewards efficiency and

    Cool read

It's pretty crazy just how good Elway got when he finally got some real weapons
The beatings will continue until morale improves....

Nice to see it put in writing what allot of us fans in the 80s already knew.

Btw see Montana's last years and how bad his talent was...those teams did well...just not as well as Elway's with similar talent. Montana's success (got to playoffs but not Super Bowl mind you) at KC is what finally got my respect for him.

Anyone can look good with exceptional talent and coaching...only the really good QBs can make below average talent get to the playoffs.

        lol....poor Dan Marino.

Elway was a winner, a lion. Dude wasn't just a QB. He was a football player. Sure would've been neat to see how he'd fair in today's pass-centric NFL.

Marino would be a god in todays NFL

          So would Elway.

One of the main reasons imo why Elway started to get better players around him was free agency. Elway was real close to throwing balls to Tim Brown but the Raiders matched our crazy offer. Instead he got Eddie Mac and Antony Miller to throw to and Mark S and Habib to protect him. Also part of me thinksss free agency is a reason we landed Zimmerman and Tbone in trades. Before free agency teams would sit on good players realizing they could not go anywhere. Free agency made teams realize they need to trade good players, pays them or lose them to another team without getting anything.

Bingo! Thats why you go back an look at pure stats and wins and Elway never shows up in the top. You have to look at how well he did with what he gots and how he became the king of comebacks! It was exciting with him behind the relm. Now we get the pleasure of him taking the relm at the Broncos administration side!

Elway often doesn't show because he was quite inconsistent. He had many of the same issues on the field as Cutler, but when crunch time came it was like Tim Tebow in 2011. He had tremendous physical capability, made a lot of bad plays, errant throws, dazzled you with perfection, and then he would not let the team loose (bite, scratch, claw).

Where Manning just directs perfection - that was not the Duke.

Why poor Marino.......Marino had everything on offense, but the organization didn't care about defense,if the defense was somewhat decent I will guarantee he would had one atleast two rings,by the end of his career...

I think QB's like Manning, Elway, Favre, Marino, Kelly, maybe Brady and others have winning mentalities-- they are competitive and driven to win whatever it takes. Others like Cutler, Vick, Ryan (IMO), Sanchez, and others seem to appear to be less driven and outwardly indifferent with coming up short.

One thing I didnt see here was how conservative Dan Reeves was on offense, and Wade Phillips for that matter. It always seemed to me that Reeves conservativeness got them behind, then he opened the playbook up and depended on John to bring them back. Just always seemed to me thats how it went down. If Elway would have had Shanny his whole career, his numbers would be right up there with Favre's imo!

Reeves was as conservative as it comes. Phillips let Jim Fassel run the offense and it wasn't Reeve ball. Either way Shanny opened it up.
