  • Hochman: Broncos lose Miller but still have Manning, so it's all Super Read more: Ho

    http://www.denverpost.com/hochman/ci...l-have-manning

This is a really great article which gives a great overview of how much our team has overcome this year. It's quite amazing we are where we are at given the amount of adversity we have faced.

    Provides a hopeful, optimistic perspective.

Merry Christmas my fellow Broncos fans. It's been a pleasure rooting for our Broncos with all of you.

            Here's the text
It's opening night Sept. 5, your Broncos just slapped around the defending Super Bowl champs, and you're having a Bud (or some bud) with a bud.

You ask: "Man, what would have to happen for the Broncos not to make the Super Bowl?"

So you start throwing out zany what-ifs, each hypothesis more preposterous.

"What if Ryan Clady is out for the year? And Champ Bailey becomes mortal? And John Fox undergoes heart surgery? And Wes Welker gets two concussions in 22 days? And three defensive starters suffer major injuries?"

Then, you get really crazy: "And ... what if Von Miller is injured for the playoffs?"

I wonder if you thought then what I'm thinking now: As long as Peyton Manning is playing, all that stuff can happen and Denver will still go to the Super Bowl.

Miller is out for the season with a torn ACL, and there's no denying it's a devastating loss. He is Denver's best defensive player, he has graded out well in most games since his return from a six-game suspension, and he's the team's best pass rusher. He's our town's bespectacled spectacle.

But did Miller's return from his suspension transform the defense? Has he altered the outcomes of games?

Look, Miller has been resplendent, but not transcendent. And yet Denver's still in the driver's seat in the AFC.

Also, seemingly every playoff team is down at least one stud — New England (tight end Rob Gronkowski), Cincinnati (defensive tackle Geno Atkins), Indianapolis (wide receiver Reggie Wayne), Carolina (wide receiver Steve Smith), New Orleans (safety Kenny Vaccaro), Seattle (cornerback Brandon Browner). Every team is patching up holes — the Broncos have more than most on defense, yes — but Denver has at least one side of the ball that's far more superior than what any of those other teams have.

POST POLL - VON MILLER INJURY

Does Von Miller's season-ending injury ruin the Broncos' Super Bowl hopes?

Yes: Miller is 2nd-best player on team
No: Miller hasn't done much this season

Good NFL teams usually have scoring averages similar to NBA stars. For example, the Philadelphia Eagles rank second in the NFL in scoring, averaging 27.9 points per game. The Broncos? They're like Wilt Chamberlain. They're averaging 38.1 points. It's absurd. If they score just 18 points at Oakland on Sunday, the Broncos will eclipse the 2007 Patriots for the most points scored in a season. Ever.

I think back to the first day of my first job. I covered Tulane football in New Orleans, and that team had a guy named Mewelde Moore, a record-breaking running back. The head coach introduced me to the running backs coach, reducing this guy's long hours and endless film study by saying: "Tell Benjamin your one job."

            "Get Mewelde on the bus."

That's Manning. Just get him on the bus, get him on the field and he will make it happen. No, it hasn't been pretty at times. For those four touchdowns in the Week 16 win at Houston, at least two Peyton passes hit the hands of defensive players, possible game-changing plays that weren't made by the Texans. And these first halves have been hard to watch. But Denver finds a way when it matters, outscoring opponents 315-190 in the second half.

The biggest question with the loss of Miller, of course, is the Broncos' pass rush. Matt Schaub was no Manning in Houston (he wasn't even Eli), but the Texans quarterback had Peyton-like time in the pocket. John Fox preaches next man up, and we're getting to the point where Denver is running out of next men. Nate Irving? Jeremy Mincey?

The Denver defense is going to allow points, yes. To me, it's how will the defense respond in the got-to-have-it moments. As such, the person on the defense who must continue to perform at a high level is Jack Del Rio. The coordinator made it work with a bunch of "next men" at Houston, holding the home team to 13 points, but what happens against the Patriots in January? Del Rio showed some savvy with blitzes occasionally out of the secondary against the Texans, such as when Omar Bolden bolted into the pocket from the left edge, forcing Schaub to step up into a sack by Danny Trevathan.

This defense won't be last year's defense — shoot, it wasn't even that good with Miller playing — but this offense is even better than last year's offense. As long as these defensive players show semblance of competence, the Broncos will still go to the Super Bowl. With Manning driving the bus.

I can open it and then a few seconds later I get a popup that says I have reached my limit of free articles for this 30 day period. For full access pay them money to get blasted by popups and spam advertising, and so they can sell my contact data to the highest bidders.

What is sad is I pay for their newspaper but that may change sooner than later.
