  • AFC West free agency needs: Denver Broncos' defense has holes

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap200...ense-has-holes

Elliot Harrison is taking a division-by-division look at all 32 squads' biggest priorities, continuing with the AFC West below.

    Denver Broncos

Top priority in free agency: Defensive back.
Other areas of interest: Defensive end, middle linebacker, wide receiver.

Working on "NFL AM" with Clinton Portis on Thursday, I had to remind myself that he once was traded for Champ Bailey. I mean, it seems like forever ago that Portis was playing -- and to think, Bailey came into the league three years before Portis did! Well, Champ is done in Denver. And although the 12-time Pro Bowl pick's play had fallen off, his release still diminishes Denver's defensive backfield. And remember, the Broncos' best cornerback from last season, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, is a free agent. Additionally, Denver's safety play still leaves something to be desired. Simply put, this secondary could use a fresh infusion of talent.

Another area that merits attention: defensive end. Shaun Phillips, the club's best pass rusher from last season, is a free agent. Moreover, Derek Wolfe missed the last couple months of last season after a scary hospitalization following seizure-like symptoms. He recently promised to return "bigger, faster, stronger" in 2014. This remains to be seen, but Denver clearly has some questions at DE. People snickered at me last season when I suggested on NFL.com/Live that the Broncos should make a trade for Jared Allen -- turns out that was indeed kicked around before the deadline. Now, Allen is a free agent, and should be a relatively affordable one, too. He would be particularly effective as a pass-rush specialist on a pitch count. And the Broncos have the spending money to bolster this position, with Allen or someone less heralded.

One last thing: Portis says Denver is the right destination for potential Titans cap casualty Chris Johnson -- it's safe to say that would be more shocking than the Portis-Bailey trade 10 years ago.

Can's comments: I agree with the holes that have been identified in this article. Dback is now an official necessity, with Champ totally out of the scene. For me, it's about being assertive in the backfield, and being capable of making big plays, as in, pics. We need to make things happen on D, and that's why I wouldn't mind a play-maker type like Tillman in our lineup. Maybe Byrd will be the guy in FA, at Safety. Whether it's FA or the draft, we will need a couple of new faces in the dbackfield.

Interesting views on Jared Allen. The man can still add pressure. I would love to see a guy with his athleticism, along with Von. They would be hard to handle!

And yes, IT'S TIME for a MLB with credentials!!!

And I also find Portis' comment about Chris Johnson quite interesting. He and Ball, and whoever else we have, would provide us with an exciting backfield.

Finally, WR is a need, if we lose Deck. I'm quite sure we will, but the good news is that this draft is loaded with WRs!

LG will be addressed maybe with a FA. Others may be given a chance, too.

A back up C will be needed unless Vallos is regarded highly enough to be re-signed.

A total of four players listed as TEs will be needed. It may be necessary to find one via one of the three ways.

If Moreno isn't re-signed, another RB will be needed.

Pass rush is so important, a FA DE may be signed. We'll see.

Mike Backer is a well known need.

Two starting CBs and two quality back ups will be needed. The Broncos are about halfway there at the moment.

A FS and a SS at least for quality depth and more are needed.

We'll see what happens in the kick/punt returner dept. If Holliday isn't on the team, someone will need to do that.

If Darren Sproles gets released as rumored then he could easily become our RB2 while
replacing Trindon Holliday as our returner.

IMO T Holliday was not worth his roster spot since he was a one role player
          and unreliable at that.

Sam, I probably should have been a little more specific with the title, as in, "Denver Free Agency Needs", which is why the list was fairly short. But that's cool. You have expanded on our greater list of needs/potential needs, and it's all very informative. I often think of "offseason" needs regardless of how we fill them.

I was just reading this article.

It made me realize while signing players to 1 and 2 years contracts limits how bad the decision can be if something goes wrong...it is also limits the upside on good decisions...every year we are going to have allot of holes to fill until our drafted players start picking up some slack.

Hopefully the Phillips/DRCs (guys we sign to low money 1 or 2 year contracts and it works out) will come back. Also they can decide to use that success to get a payday elsewhere.

I do not know a better option at this point but the draft needs to start working out or this will end up being another team relying on free agent starters every year.
