  • Possible position change for Roby

Head Coach Gary Kubiak explains why the team could move second year cornerback Bradley Roby to safety.

Kubiak wants him on the field more than just playing in the sub packages, so it sounds like the coaching staff are thinking of having him out there in the base D as a safety.

I'm really excited by that kind of talk. Looks like the coaching staff and FO have had plenty of talks this off season of what they want to do with the personnel we have right now. Roby definitely proved himself worthy as a rookie in my opinion of earning as much playing time as possible. Throw in one of Moore's biggest issues in my opinion was that of coverage in he was very hit and miss when it came to being able to cover and Roby has shown he does just fine in that role. We are also seeing this in the coaching staff really evaluating the OL and how they could possibly use even the players we have to maximize value. This is what we need to see honestly in the team looking a lot more inward for how to address some issues than what we saw last year with bringing in so many FA's. They all played great for us but time to see what we are doing in the draft actually pay off.

      Why not?

Although I really like him as a corner. Such a promising rookie year.

It's also more than about Roby. He has proven a capable CB, especially for a rookie. He's shown his willingness to tackle which is a must for a safety but this move also makes it possible to have Ward step up more, play in the box, blitz and cover.

Roby being the gem he is allows us to utilize him as a hybrid CB / safety which, in turn, allows us to get more out of Ward.

I believe he is capable of being a pro bowler at either CB or S. Safety is his best opportunity to get on the field this year, with Harris and Talib in front of him at CB. He still saw/would see plenty of snaps as the 3rd CB, but if you can find a way to increase his snaps, then you do so. Looks like Roby at FS is an opportunity to get our best 4 DBs on the field as often as possible.

Coaches want their best guys on the field. We'll see how it goes.

Well, maybe Elway can lean on Roby's best friend's dad, who happens to be Steve Atwater- one of the bests safeties to ever play and one of the greatest Broncos ever. To help mentor Roby in the transition.

Roby has such an upside. We have only seen a little of what this man can do.

Really? Steve Atwater is Roby's best friends dad? Oh man, I loved that guy. He would have to teach him how to play without getting penalties. Atwater would have a hard time playing in the NFL the way it is today. He'd be getting fines and suspensions every play!

I am not buying into the move and think it may be pre-draft fodder to not divulge anything.

Maybe. The Safety draft pool isn't very impressive this year. We shall see.

Exactly. And as you said, the Coaching Staff want's the best players on the field, ................. at every position. Only one safety (Free or Strong) that I've seen is projected in the 1st Round (Landon Collins, Alabama). So, there's really no sense in blowing smoke.

I was thinking about this last season while Rahim was struggling. No guarantees, but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be worth a shot.

While I think Roby would do pretty well at FS, I think the move is unnecessary. His coverage and man v man skills as a corner are pretty good. Why would you take that away? He is a cornerback because he has a good ability at covering WRs in man coverage. Because of his hitting ability and his lack of ability to cover in man very well, I think Webster would be a much better fit at Safety than Roby.

I would feel much better with Roby guarding the nickle than Webster than Webster guarding the nickle and Roby taken out of man coverage.

Id rather put webster back there and draft a guy like Drummond, Amos, Rowe, etc in the middle rounds to compete. We have an Elite set of DBs as it is right now. I do not want to change that.
                              So far:
                              FA- Melvin Gordon. Brandon Scherff
                              1. Kenneth Murray LB; 2. Shenault WR; 2B. Biadazz Center, 3. OT
