  • Cody Latimer ready for big jump, Broncos' Kubiak says

Coach Gary Kubiak said Tuesday that Cody Latimer is poised for a "big jump" in 2015. Will the second-year wide receiver make up for the loss of Julius Thomas and Wes Welker?

The Denver Broncos' offense that broke records in 2013 has since lost Pro Bowl tight end Julius Thomas and slot machine Wes Welker, leaving a prime opportunity for 2014 second-round draft pick Cody Latimer.

New coach Gary Kubiak made it clear Tuesday that the organization is counting on Latimer to ascend to the No. 3 receiver role in 2015.

"I think it's time for him to make a big jump," Kubiak said, via The Denver Post. "Not just a little jump. Obviously his play time is fixing to pick up, and it needs to pick up, so we need him to make a big jump in year two."

Latimer was relegated to the scout team as a rookie, learning the playbook so he could gain Peyton Manning's trust.

"Peyton has so many checks, and he makes so many calls on the field, you have to be ready," Latimer recently explained to the Mike High Report. "He wants you to be on cue with him, and if you make a mistake, he doesn't like that."

As Ravens offensive coordinator last year, Kubiak spent a day with Latimer leading up to the 2014 NFL Draft.

"We really, really liked him. He has a lot of ability," Kubiak said a month ago. "Usually a player like that is going to make his biggest jump from year one to year two."

General manager John Elway also has "high expectations" after watching Latimer "work his tail off" as a rookie.

"He's a big, fast, strong wide receiver that we really believe is going to be help us win," Elway said. "He's got the ability now to catch the ball and get open, but also he does a great job on fourth down and has the ability to run after the catch. ... He'll get a lot more opportunities this year."

It will be interesting to see how Latimer is utilized in Denver. Kubiak's scheme is run-centric with more two-wide receiver sets than the one Manning operated under Adam Gase.

Expect Latimer to play outside opposite Demaryius Thomas in three-wide sets, with Emmanuel Sanders moving to the slot.

Much like the Saints, the Broncos are altering their formula after coming up short with a philosophy tilted heavily toward offense.

Even if Manning is more reliant on defense and a ball-control approach, he needs Latimer to emerge as a reliable third option in an aerial attack that struggled down the stretch last season.
We knew it was coming. It's confirmed. I can't wait to see some more devastating blocking too lolol. If he lives up to expectations, this receiving corps should be pretty damn good this year.
The beatings will continue until morale improves....

I really hope that he makes that big jump because we need that other big presence out there. If he becomes the WR that we all hope and think he can be then opposing defenses are going to have nightmares thinking about how to defend this offense

I see Latimer as a better Eddie Mac (hopefully only time will tell if the kid has the mental tools to match his physical tools)

By this I point to our win against GB in the Super Bowl. GB had an outstanding playmaking safety and we would motion Eddie Mac to his area in the field pre snap. When the ball was snapped Eddie would go block that safety so he could not make plays in the run game. You all know the rest as TD had a wondeful day running the ball. There was more to it then that but I have seen coaches and players talk about that tactic being one of the keys of the game.

A guy like that in the run game is very valuable to have

That's a great point. Latimer wasn't on the field much last year, but when he was he blocked very well. He laid out a couple of DBs IIRC.

I am excited to see Latimer out there on a more regular basis. I expected to see more of him last season, but that's done. He brings physicality to our O, and will be very much of an asset if he can deliver some timely/effective blocks, thereby keeping Ds honest, and helping us gain even more YACs from our terrific receivers.

It's ironic that we lost a talented TE and might not miss him that much (if at all), given he was more of a big receiver than a TE. For me, a TE should add toughness, and key blocks, while being a sure handed receiver. Latimer as a receiver can help fill some of the void (if even necessary) by playing a bit like a receiving hybrid....tough and talented.

Teams that play physical naturally are going to be a load. I compare them to hockey teams who never stop body checking. It wears down opponents. So I love the fact that we may be tougher and more physical on O. Physicality on both sides of the line make for a painful 3 hours and change!!!

I susoect they will get him on the field more to see if they really need to spend 15+ mil a year in Keeping DT.

I always believed that he was drafted to replace DT when he got to expensive.

He is big fast and can block. Now the question of is can he catch.

IMO Fox did him not favors keeping him off the field.

If our offensive line turns out to be half decent I think this will be my favorite offense of the Manning era. Two quality tight ends who can block (Daniels can receive and Green will most likely be decent if not good), a big finesse receiver (who blocks well when he blocks), a big physical possession receiver who can block well, and Sanders who is a great small fast receiver who plays inside and out. A good starting caliber RB in Anderson with Ball potentially in there as a starter and Thompson who is big and physical while Hillman is a receiving threat and change of pace back. This O has balance and options.
