  • Several Broncos defensive players on contract year in 2015

    Jeff Legwold, ESPN Staff Writer
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – The thing about the football business is there is the football and there is the business.

And in terms of football, the Denver Broncos believe they are a team worthy of being in Super Bowl conversations. But in the business of their business, they face the prospect of it being the Year of the Contract on defense, as six players who have started games for the team are poised for unrestricted free agency at season's end, including Pro Bowl linebacker Von Miller.

When all is said and done in 2015, decisions will be made about who stays and who goes, but as the Broncos closed out their offseason program in recent weeks, it was clear all involved want, and need, it to be a win-win situation, as in the Broncos win and the contracts follow.

Or as defensive end Derek Wolfe put it: “My main goal is winning a Super Bowl. That’s all I care about right now. If we win a Super Bowl, everybody gets paid. That’s our goal right now as a team."Money matters will always matter in the league, and this season will present some challenges in that regard for the Broncos on defense, even as they spent much of the offseason trying to hammer out a deal with wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, who currently carries the franchise-player tag.

But when John Elway took over as the team’s chief football decision-maker in 2011, the Broncos needed plenty of help across the depth chart. In particular, the team needed, in Elway’s eyes, a makeover on defense. And with 16 picks combined in the 2011 and 2012 drafts, the Broncos selected 10 defensive players.

Two of those picks – safety Rahim Moore and Nate Irving – already moved on and signed elsewhere in free agency this past March. And this year Miller, Wolfe, Malik Jackson and Danny Trevathan will be projected starters when the Broncos open training camp. All four are scheduled to be unrestricted free agents at season’s end.

Also scheduled to be unrestricted free agents are linebacker Steven Johnson, who made the team as an undrafted rookie in 2012, and safety David Bruton Jr., who is the team’s only remaining draft pick on the roster from the 2009 class. Both players have started games for the Broncos in their careers and consistently have been among the team’s best special-teams players.

That rather stout list would include cornerback Chris Harris Jr. as well, but Harris signed a five-year contract last December, in part, he said, because he wanted to stay and get something done before free agency opened.

“I remember last year after I got my deal, I was able to just play more freely and just really play my game,’’ Harris said. “ … I don’t think it affected my play. I think I played at a high level while talks were going, but as a player you want that security. Especially since I wasn’t drafted, it was really my first chance at that kind of thing, I wanted to get it right, and doing it before the season was best for me."

Of this year’s group, Miller certainly tops the list. He was Elway’s first selection on the job – second overall in the 2011 draft – and returned to the Pro Bowl following the 2014 season after a 2013 season that included a five-game suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy and a torn ACL.

Thomas has the franchise-player tag at the moment, but if the Broncos work out a long-term deal with Thomas before July 15, that franchise player tag could conceivably be used on Miller next offseason. If no deal is worked out with Thomas, the Broncos will have two of their elite players with expiring contracts and one franchise-player tag to use.

For his part, Miller said he has altered his eating habits this offseason. He has shunned drinks with sugar in them and is poised “for big things because I feel great, better than I ever have."

“But I just want to play the best I can,’’ Miller said. “Everything takes care of itself if we do good things and I play like I want to for this team … I think guys here worry about winning. The time for all that other stuff is after the season.’’

Harris, too, said he doesn’t believe any of the Broncos have let off-the-field issues affect how things go on the field on the way to four consecutive AFC West titles.

“Champ [Bailey] used to say, 'Your play has to speak for you on that, so don’t let that slip,'’’ Harris said. "They ain't going to sign you if you're out there messing up."

Or, as Jackson, who is poised to be a breakout player in the team’s new 3-4 defense, put it earlier this offseason: “I’m just worried about – seriously -- just going out there and doing my part, and making them give me as much as I feel like I deserve. Right now it’s not about the money -- which would be nice, I’m not going to lie. But right now it’s about going out here and just trying to earn it … so for me and to sit there and be worried about a contract right now would be silly. … The way I see it, I’m just waiting for the end of the year. That’s when I see it coming."

We need to do our best to resign them but DT is hoping to eat up most of the cap. Guess that is more important than the rest of the team.

Getting paid what you deserve and taking care of your family is perfectly exceptable. The career lifespan for these guys is an average of 2.5 years. Get as much money as you, while you can.
A healthy Kenneth Dixon is a top 5 NFL RB.

Yes at the exception of the rest of the team I've learned that, that is acceptable here.
Even if most ppl can take care of their family with less than 100k a year.*
Go DT get your big contract lets s**** the rest of the team because they are not as deserving!!!*
Even if they too are at a 2.5 year life span...

every player has a right to go after the biggest contract they can get. Everyone does that. If I can make more $ doing the same job somewhere else...why shouldn't I. However...the FO for each team also has the right to pay, or not pay, what said player is asking.

I agree, get your money while you can. But unless you are an elite quarterback or pass rusher, get it from another team unfortunately.Especially at the expense of 3-4 other core/role players.

Of that group I think Miller definitely and maybe Jackson are keepers. Wolfe played every game last season but didn't seem like he recovered fully from the spine injury he suffered the year previous. Jackson has been much more durable. My guess is we'll have room to keep one of either Wolfe or Jackson and at the moment I would take Jackson.

Trev also has injuries to come back from. Durability and the ability to stay healthy is valuable. Right now Wolfe and Trevathan have some question marks that should be answered this season.

You also have to factor in whether these defensive players actually want to stay, remember Manning is getting near the end of his career which means our ability to be competitive is a bit of a question mark going forward. Of these 4 only Miller is worth tagging.

I agree CTM,and that's the problem. If Malik has a monster year, which I think he will, he is going to want to be paid. "If" Trev and Marshall come back and put up pro bowl numbers again, they are going to demand pro bowl money(deservadly so). Then where do we go?

                Great problem to have, right?

True the better a team plays creates a catch 22 where because the team is playing so well, players inevitably get expensive and it's difficult to keep a lot of them.

In Jackson's case I think we should have enough info on him as to whether or not we want him around for the next few seasons by the middle of this season and maybe we can work out a team friendly deal during the year. If Jackson has a great year and is allowed to test the market he might be too expensive to retain.

However, Pernell McPhee received 15 mil guaranteed, 40 total over 5 years, it would shock me if Jackson came close to those numbers. My guess is if he has a great year he's more in line for 4 years 22 mil with 8 guaranteed.

As far as Marshall goes I believe he'll be a RFA after this season so we don't have to allocate too much in order to keep him around for another year.

I just don't see Trev here long-term. It seems like we find a very good LB late in the draft or undrafted every year who comes in and puts up great numbers.

I disagree. We have had very few good LB the past 8 years or so. Besides Von Miller, DJ Williams and WW were the only decent ones we have had ( not counting DOOM who was at OLB in a 3-4 for a couple years) and they weren't all that great. Trevathan is very good but his health is a huge ? and marshall we will have to see how he does inside.

Others we have had include: Ian Gold, Nate Webster, Louis Green, Jamie Winborn, Boss Bailey, Spencer Larsen, Andra davis, Mario Haggan, Joe Mays, Nate Irving, Keith Brooking, Paris Lenon, Steven Johnson.....

.......not exactly a who's who of the LB position.

I do not understand this post at all.
Why is he or how is he eating up most of the cap space? How is he getting an extended contract more important than the rest of the team. This makes literally no sense.

We have around 25mil in cap space for next year as of right now. It is very likely that ware and manning are gone next year too- which is another 30 million...Thats 55 million roughly in cap space before we even talk about guys like Colquitt and a few others who have bigger chunks that may not return (Clady, Talib as possible examples).

With 55mil in cap space just how exactly is DT eating up most of it and how is he somehow more important than the team?
                      So far:
                      FA- Melvin Gordon. Brandon Scherff
                      1. Kenneth Murray LB; 2. Shenault WR; 2B. Biadazz Center, 3. OT

Well yes if you go back to 2008, I don't need reminding on how bad that unit was. I can still see Nate Webster jumping in celebration after making a tackle 7 yards down field..

I should have clarified that since Elway took over I feel like he's done a very good job finding hidden gems at the LB position through draft picks and UDFA. Trevathan and Marshall are the obvious ones but Irving was a big contributor, though not a full-time starter, and Steven Johnson I think is much better than people give him credit for, he's done well when asked to perform, and I think Barrow also could do very well for us.

i think that was actually jaime winborn..Webster was captain "lunge at player with ball, head down, arms flat by sides, hoping to spear the guy and not wrap up" after contact was made his helmet would pop off. Every other play his helmet would fly off. Man, those were some dark days.

I like Johnson as well. He is my dark horse candidate to start at ILB this season. Barrow has potential, we just haven't seen him play much yet.

No, I think it was Webster. That guy would celebrate every tackle like it was a game winning tackle for loss.
