  • Broncos to boot sports authority from sponsorship slot

    http://www.businessden.com/2016/06/0...nsorship-slot/

The Denver Broncos are moving to cut Sports Authority from the roster.

In a court filing on Friday, lawyers for the Broncos seek court permission to tear up their sponsorship agreement with the troubled retailer, saying Sports Authority already has stiffed them for $2.1 million since February.

But because of bankruptcy protections, the Broncos cannot remove Sports Authority’s backlit signs and billboards from Mile High nor Sports Authority banner ads from DenverBroncos.com.

Patrick Smyth, vice president of public relations for the Denver Broncos, did not respond to requests for comment Tuesday.

The $55 million sponsorship deal the Broncos signed with Sports Authority in 2011 is replete with other perks beyond stadium signage: A corporate box near the 50-yard-line, 16 pregame field passes a game and four Super Bowl tickets every year.

That deal was supposed to run through 2035, with Sports Authority paying the Broncos a total of $55.2 million in quarterly installments.

According to court filings on Friday, the retailer has now skipped the first two payments of $4.2 million due this year.

A hearing on the motion is scheduled for June 28, according to paperwork submitted by Denver-based law firm Weinman & Associates and Delaware-based Sullivan Hazaltine Allinson .

Earlier this month, lawyers for the Broncos maneuvered to block Sports Authority from selling its sponsorship rights without the Broncos’ permission.

The entity that owns Mile High Stadium, the Metropolitan Football Stadium District, has argued separately that Sports Authority cannot re-assign or sell stadium naming rights without its consent.

Sports Authority billboards also adorn the inside of Coors Stadium, which is owned by the Denver Metropolitan Major League Baseball Stadium District.

In super hindsight I wish part of the agreement to get taxpayers to pay for the stadium was the name should have stayed Mile High.

Banners could be sold...things could be done to the stadium (except paint in a color other then orange and blue!!) but the name should always be "Mile High Stadium"

We ask players and other Bronco exmployees to take a home town discount yet we sell our stadium for every single profit dollar we can get...the buisness side of the Broncos needs to get on the same page as the football side.

Companies can pay to advertise but the bottom line is our stadium is always going to be Mile High and our colors will always be orange and blue! If companies are not cool with that they should not come.

I never entered a Sports Authority store, read their adds or even considered giving them a dime once after they painted our stadium red.

We should have a naming contest.

I will say, it would be funny if a dispensary did get the sponsorship watching all threads discussing the sponser get moved to the p&r section of the boards lol

Then, Andrew Luck would come to Denver.

Have the fine people of Colorado sample the wares of each dispensary, then after they sample them, they have to name each brand they sampled. The person who can name all the brands of said dispensary wins.

It's my understanding that it is Mile High Stadium. The naming rights to the field are sold. SA Field at Mile High Stadium. I saw an article a while ago that Elway was getting active in the car business again. If that's true and if he is using his name then Elway Field at Mile High Stadium would be fine. I'm sure it won't happen. How about a soft drink sponsorship? Orange Crush Field at Mile High Stadium.

I would be all for the old school "Orange Crush", being as how it's been a long time soda, i wish they would bid on the name...

Maybe your young or do not remember but one time it was just Mile High Stadium

No brand name was required to be attached to it everytime it was said in an effort to market some product

Also before we sold our stadium name like it was left field wall on some minor league baseball stadium I never saw Mile High painted in the color of the KC Chiefs....who many of the early Broncos considered our arch rival even tho the fans use to think the Raiders were.

The concept of Orange Crush at Mile High would be interesting but be real....it would be Mile High Viagra, Mile High Marijuana in Arvada or even Treasure Island at Mile High with a bunch of silver and black pirate things predominantly all over the stadium if that was the highest bidder.

The buisess side of the Broncos is ran by people whose only loyalty is green...orange and blue are just a means to an end to get green in their pocket.
