  • Magic #7 and the Playoff Parallels

Here are some interesting tidbits for the Bronco in their Super Bowl quest:

1.) Isn't it appropriate that the Broncos finally won their first Playoff game post-Elway exactly SEVEN years after he retired?

2.) If the Broncos go to the Super Bowl XL, it will mark their SEVENTH Super Bowl
appearance, second most in NFL history only the the Dallas Cowboys and their Eight appearances. The Broncos would also become the first team in NFL History to appear in Super Bowls in four straight decades....1978, 1986, 1987, 1990, 1998, 1999 and 2006.

3.) When the Broncos finally won their first Super Bowl in 1998, they faced a Bill Cowher-Coached Steeler team in the '98 AFC Championship game, and a Holmgren-Coached Packer team in SB XXXII, which would be the same Coaching matchup if the Broncos beat the Steelers Sunday, and matchup with Holmgren's Seahawks in the Super Bowl.

Also, Holmgren's last Playoff victory as the Head Coach of the Packers was the 1998 NFC Championship game, against the Carolina Panthers, the same opponent he faces this Sunday with Seattle.

4.) If you consider the 1970's Steelers and the 2000 New England Patriots to be 'NFL Dynasties', it will be interesting to note that if the Broncos beat the Steelers Sunday, that would give the Broncos a 4-2 lifetime record in the Palyoffs
against the Steelers, while Saturday Night gave the Broncos a 2-0 lifetime Playoff lead VS the Patriots. The Broncos can also win their third Super Bowl Title, tieing the franchise with Oakland and New England for second behind Pittsburgh in All-Time AFC Super Bowl victories with four. The Broncos, as of the end of the 2006 Regular Season, became the team with the most victories in the NFL since 1974, surpassing Miami and Pittsburgh, who are now tied for second.

5.) If Mike Shanahan is able to Coach the Denver Broncos to another SB appearance, it will mark his Eighth SB as an Assistant or Head Coach in the NFL, placing him one behind former Bronco Head Coach Dan Reeves, who appeared in nine as a Player or Coach.

Gary Kubiak would be making his SEVENTH SB appearance as a player or Assistant Coach.

6.) Yesterday's Playoff loss by the Indianapolis Colts to the Pittsburgh Steelers was strangley reminiscent of the Broncos last Playoff run, in that the Colts, like the Minnesota Vikings before them in 1999, lost a game in which both teams kickers, the Vikings Gary Andersen, and the Colts Mike Vanderjagt, missed the critical, would-be winning FG's at a time when both players were, statistically, the most accurate FG kickers in NFL history, allowing for two of the biggest upsets in NFL Playoff history. In both cases, the Broncos are the following opponent for both teams....the Falcons in SB XXXIII and the Steelers Sunday.

7.) If Mike Shanahan wins SB XL, he will become only the third Coach in NFL History to win Super Bowl Titles with two differerent QB's, joining The Redskins and Joe Gibbs, who did it with three different QB's and the NY Giants and Bill Parcells with two.

    Forecast:

    Denver 23
    Pittsburgh 16

    Seattle 23
    Carolina 17

    Super Bowl XL

Denver against their old AFC West rival, Seattle Seahawks

One other little tidbit in there is the last time New England lost in the playoffs was in 1998 season, the same season that Denver won thier last playoff game.

Ben chose #7 because of Elway. I'm sure it's going to be an honor for him to suit up, wearing #7, in the City of Elway.

At this point, both teams are "the best" team .. we wouldn't be playing for the AFC Championship if we weren't. Here's to whichever of the best comes out on top ...

I would point out that the Steelers run this year is actually quite similar to the Broncos 1st Superbowl run in 1998. Obviously not exactly the same, the main difference being your formerly mistake prone QB (Plummer) is actually good while ours (Kordell Stewart) uhh...wasn't. But remember, we have the veteran in the twilight of his career. We have the improbable vicotry against the top seeded team. We have the away field advantage, hehe. And hopefully we'll have the Bill Romaowski-style, "Doi!" head slap directed at Jake Plummer by our own unlikeable LB, Joey Porter.
Yes I'm an insuffereable know-it-all, and thank you for noticing.

Good post....I was going to post something like this on Monday but held off in doing it. The one thing you missed is that with a Super Bowl win it will mark SEVEN straight wins to close out the season. Too much Karma surrounding this with the shadow of Elway. Again, good post and great intangibles.
