why did you start two threads 20 minutes apart in the same forum saying the same thing?

and we should get him! nalen is aging, and with the offense the broncos run, they need a good offensive line that can move

you probably could have implied your feelings in the first one, no?

no biggie, but if you can fit your thoughts into an already exsiting thread, its better to do so.

          welcome to the boards.

            Mangold in the first????

Why? When was the last time a center was drafted in the first? David Remmington maybe? (just joking) With the style and scheme that the Broncos use on offense, they do not need to draft any offensive linemen in the first round. While the O-Line could use some depth, other needs are far more important. If the Broncos do not improve their pass rush, then they won't make it any closer to the promised land. Nalen and Hamilton have the center position handled. Get an impact player, Mario Williams, by trading up in the first. Mangold is an excellent player, but the position as it presently stands with the Broncos does not warrent the pick.

I think we won't have the 29th pick but will have John Abraham instead

I think the interior line depth will be addressed in the draft but we get high value guys for our systom much later in the draft. This year those guys look like Eslinger, Setterstrom, Maybe Chester smaller lighter more athletic guys. I wouldn't mind seeing us try to pick up some bigger guys on the interior, as long as they have good feet and some overall athleticism i.e. Charles Spencer and Mangold. I don't think it will happen. The only first round O-line pick-ups I see would be OT's

                  Ughhhh...

I was so bummed that Seattle drafted Chris Spencer in the first last year. I was like, "What!?!?!? A freakin' center in the first, that sucks..."

But, as it turns out, that was a solid pick. Tobeck and Gray are both aging, and Spencer has a shot at taking one of their spots in training camp. Not bad...

I guess if Shanny thinks he could start immediately at RG, then he may go for it. I'd absolutely hate it though if he took him just to sit for a year, especially when we have other needs...

If we grabbed Mangold at 29, I would cry. There will be some STUD athletes on the board at that point and i just don't see the point in drafting a kid whose gunna sit behind a stud who's commited long term. Mangold is a talent, no question, however there are gunna be some animal d-linemen and those TE prospects at 29.

Reasons not to draft Mangold at 29

                      1. We have more obvious needs

                      2. Not sure he would fit our zone running scheme.

                      3. Chris Myers - already on roster

                      4. Greg Eslinger should be available 3rd rd and he is a stud in zone blocking scheme.

                        Agree with most.

At the combine, Mangold discussed a few points with the announcers and made the point of mentioning that Ohio State ran zone blocking part of the time. So I have to disagree with your #2 reason. He is a good strong athlete, but as you said the team has higher needs to fill in the 1st round.

i actually would kinda like it-- depending very much on how the rest of the draft plays out, i.e. who we took at #22, who else is still on the board at #29, etc. he wouldn't be my first choice, but he's a guy i like, so i won't be crushed if we take him, either. . . unless we don't get a DE at #22 and there's someone on the board like tapp or wimbley. . .

but i do think mangold would look good in a broncs uni-- i know we have nalen, but he talked about retiring this year, and there's no guarantee he'll play three more years just because he signed a three-year contract. . . plus (said with fingers crossed) there are always injuries to worry about, and depth is never a bad thing. . . i'm also not opposed to keeping hamilton at guard, he's a good player there even if center is his natural position. . .

i liked hearing that mangold was effective against top competition in the senior bowl practices, and i've read that he's a tough kid with good intangibles and leadership skills. . . i believe he moves well enough to fit nicely here, and there's nothing wrong with a little bit bigger lineman if he can move. . .

as others have said here, we do have more pressing needs-- but you don't always just want to draft for need either. . . you can end up with some mediocre dudes that way if you're not careful! if there's a player available at a position of greater need who you think has equal potential, then certainly you grab him, but if you reach too often you end up with a core of scrubs. . .

in any case, i don't think we WILL take mangold-- but i personally wouldn't be totally opposed to it. . . as long as we get some DL help, either through the draft or trading for abraham!

rest in peace, darrent williams and damien nash-- you will be missed!!
