  • Warrick Dunn, Fred Taylor

Yesterday on Sirius Radio, the hosts mentioned that Warrick Dunn and Fred Taylor were seeking new contracts. Both apparently want a new deal or have expressed the desire to be traded.

I think Dunn would be a perfect fit, coming from a similar system to the Broncos. Even though he has been very durable, my main concern is that he would be in his 10th season next year.

I am unsure about Taylor, except that he puts up good numbers. He is also older and appears durable.

If you people are mad about Tatum being injured, you'll LOVE Fred Taylor... durable... psh.

Either way, I wouldn't want either of these guys, not because of their talent, but because of the fact the money we'd have to shell out to get either of these RBs would be better spent on Charles Grant (NO), and DL help.

      I like Warrick Dunn.
I think he would fit well in our offense.

Don't know if we'd have a serious chance of bringing him to Denver.

interesting. . . i posted this in the thread linked in my sig on wednesday:

one interesting guy who i have a sneaking suspicion may become available is fred taylor. . . maurice jones-drew may never be capable of handling 350 carries per year, but he's proven to be a tougher runner than people expected, and has been extremely productive. . . furthermore, the jags are very high on greg jones, who was a tailback in college and played very well in limited action carrying the ball last year. . . taylor has had repeated squabbles with management over his contracts, and doesn't see eye to eye with coach jack del rio-- taylor wants to be paid in line with his superstar talent, and the jags have been naturally reluctant to give that kind of money to a guy who seems to get hurt every single year at some point or other. . . taylor isn't getting younger, and i think the jags may decide that they're satisfied with a combination of jones and jones-drew. . . taylor could be released to free up cap space, or offered in trade for randy moss. . . if he's available, i don't think he's worth the kind of money he's inevitably going to want, but there's no denying his combination of size and speed would be sick in our backfield. . .

durango, i'm not sure where you're coming from saying that taylor appears durable-- actually, durability has been THE main question mark about him for his entire career. . . he has only played 16 games twice in a 9 year career, and has only topped 300 carries for a season a single time. . . the guy has fantastic talent, and an extreme penchant for being slowed by nagging injuries has prevented him from ever realizing his true potential-- he would be recognized as one of the premier backs in the league if he could stay healthy!

if he becomes available, he would certainly be an intriguing pickup. . . we would besmarter to invest a 1st day draft pick, but unfortunately this draft doesn't seem to be particularly deep at RB. . . mike hart returning for his senior year doesn't help the depth, and it'll be even thinner if michael bush doesn't come out. . . michael turner is the option i'm really interested in, but we'll have to see how things shake out with the chargers first. . .

if the jags cut taylor, he could potentially be the kind of guy who sits on the market for quite a while-- there will be plenty of interest, but i suspect teams will be pretty reticent to pay the kind of money he's going to want for a guy of his age and with his injury history. . . he may end up signing one of those deals that looks bigger than it really is because of a huge roster bonus in the second or third year of the deal. . . . that's not an uncommon scenario, and if he were available for that type of contract he would certainly be an attractive option-- like others here, i'm ultimately more in favor of looking for good young talent instead of spending free agent dollars, but if a talent of this nature is available for the right price, he can be a really nice "rental" for a few years. . . just once, it would be nice to bring in a proven, quality back and plug him into our system and see what he can do-- taylor's the kind of guy who could really help out our developing young passing game, and make our O-line look good with his burst and power. . . wouldn't be my first choice, but ya gotta keep your mind open, and i'd certainly be excited if we looked at getting him in the offseason. . . picture a sceanrio where we spend our four 1st day picks on, say, a DT, a DE, an OLT and a safety, and bring in taylor as our one major FA signing-- i could be very happy with a situation like that. . . . not saying it's at all likely, just discussing different possibilities. . .

Dogfish, good analogy. I agree that the draft appears weak for RB's, and an upgrade at RB would probably need to happen via FA. Thanks for the observation on Taylors durability, I honestly haven't paid much attention to Taylor until I heard the Sirius guys talking about him.

This will be an interesting spring. Because the draft is loaded with good linemen, I think we will probably load up on day 1. I could see us pursuing a FA running back if the price is right.
