Falcons | Kerney voiding final two years of contract
    Mon, 19 Feb 2007 17:33:44 -0800

ESPNews reports Atlanta Falcons DE Patrick Kerney has voided the final two years of his contract. He will now be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

This makes me think he really wants to be here... Maybe he had some under the table discussions with Shanny for a contract already? Man, who knows, but this is definitely good news for us.

While it is good news, can't they still slap the franchise tag on him?

It'll be a good signing for us, but an overrated one. He's 31 years old and coming off an injury. I just don't see how he'll be that much of an upgrade over who we already have at this point in time. I think he'll help us, but hopefully he doesn't get a huge contract. It'll be really sad when the Broncos address their defensive line problems with an injured, 31 year old end, and it's the only way it's addressed.

However, I don't see why people are getting excited about this, I mean it's comparable to the Kenard Lang signing last off-season. Lang isn't as good as a player, but he isn't much worse and they're probably in the same boat as how much they have left in the tank. Bring him in, bring him in for cheap, as cheap as it gets. There's no reason he should be getting top dollar at this point in time. Draft a tackle, draft another end. . . and then we're in business.

Umm No? Hence the "Voiding the remaining two years on his contract". You cant Franchise tag a player under contract. Being as he just voided it, he is now a unrestricted free agent. Or atleast i think thats how it works. I do think its the next step to going to a new team. I hope its the Broncos!!!

We could then worry about the DT, RB and OL in the draft. Maybe a safety as well.

Well, if he voided it, then he isn't under contract anymore.....

man pipes, you are the biggest smartazz on these boards, and i love it, i cant give you enough CP's...

this is definitely a good development in our quest to sign Kerney. He may not be the elite pass rusher he used to, but i think that if we do sign him, we will definitely notice his impact. good news to all you Marshawn lovers too, because if we sign Kerney, and Okoye doesnt slip to us, we could be taking him, since his draft stock took a hit after his legal troubles.

My 2007 Adopt a Broncos are Brandon Marshall and Erica Weston

I KNEW IT! I knew those rumors that the Falcons would franchise Kerney were B.S.!

He's certainly not worth top 5 money, but he is valuable.

                  He'd make a good strong-side replacement for Courtney Brown and shore up the run defense. He's 6'5 274 versus Brown's 6'4" 285.

He had 10.5 sacks a few years ago, but Denver doesn't need him as a sack specialist. They have Ekuban, Dumervil and Lang as pass-rush ends. They need a power end to replace Courtney and Kerney would be a good one.

I sure hope Denver signs him, then their primary need would be to draft a DT in the 2nd or 3rd round (unless they actually ARE trading up to grab Okoye or Alan Branch -- which would be awesome, but I seriously doubt it, alas!)

Kerney plays LDE where we sorely need it has a HIGH motor and plays the run superbly.. KenardLang plays RDE or is better suited for it.. PK will help on passing downs and definely shore up where it has been noted that we missed a true anchor or LDE
also the signing of him would upgrade that position for the next year and will preform hopefully at a high leval ... which means we can address the other end .. or Defensive Tackle ...Or RB, S

Or heck even a RDE that can play full time and still get dumervile in on passindowns

also signing kerney providing he can recover from his injury gives us a solid player and not a rookie who may or may not produce.. at this point i would Trade down grab hawkins or tyler .and get a safey in the second round..

I'm well aware of what Kerney plays, my post was regarding on how this isn't that huge of a signing if it happens. Kerney will give us help for what, a couple years? Cool. Where to from there? Kerney is a good player, but not a solution to our problem. Perhaps a step in the right direction, but this team needs to realize that the long term solution to this problem is youth on the defensive line, not AGE.

Those charges were dropped... He's still considered a top 20 pick... Sorry.

What do you think of his torn chest muscle? That kind of injury can give players trouble, especially older players like Kerney.

Anybody remember how Luther Ellis played after his torn chest muscle? The poor guy had the drive to play, but he was noticably weakened and kept reinjuring his chest muscles. That seems to be a bad injury for older defensive lineman to have.

Well, this draft is not really stocked with prototypical Power Ends.

Charles Johnson and JaMaal Anderson are the most notable, but both could be gone by the time we pick.

Kerney would be a temporary fix, but the team knows this.

Imagine we kept Pryce... he'd be around the same age, correct?

New Power end that has 2 10 sack seasons in the past, and age 31?

Looks like we're picking up where we left off.

Pryce is obviously a superior player to Kerney, to me, but Kerney will be a good fix until we can find a good long term solution at power end.

If we want to make an investment in the future, lets make sure it is the right one.

Kerney might not even have to play LDE full time, with Ekuban to spell him occasionally, maybe even Dumervil at times too.

Point is, he'd be in the rotation.
