Kiper's latest draft had us taking Carriker and the Cowboys, who draft right after us, taking Reggie Nelson. If Nelson does fall to us at #21, would we really pass him up considering he has Top 15 talent? This draft is pretty deep on the d-line and it is hard to get a playmaking safety with the talent of Nelson. Thoughts?

Considering safety isn't a major need, that is a smart pick. For one, Carriker is also a top 15 talent, so if he falls to us we are getting great value. Second, we have great safety play and the only "need" we have there is to get a player that can take over in a season or two. That means it isn't at all worth a first round pick.
We have major concerns on the d-line. Just because there are going to be good d-lineman in later rounds doesn't mean you should pass at taking the best one you can. We can get a great d-lineman at 21, we can get several average ones later. I think the great one would help our biggest concern a lot more than a few more average ones.Comment

Safety is a major need. Just ask John Lynch.Comment

I think people should realize by now that football is about quality, not quantity. Who cares if there are a lot of decent ones, we need a really good one with potential to be great.👍 1Comment

Lets compare what our d play was like with Ferguson to what it was without him. It went from allowing around 9 points a game to around 25 points a game when he got injured. That alone proves that him and Brandon where doing their jobs. Second, Lynch has made a lot of recent pro bowls, so there is no way you could convince me that he needs replaced. Or should I say, there is no way the coaching staff will replace him.
We have had good safety play. Our problem in coverage has been that we have had no pressure on QB's. No matter how good your safeties and corners are, they will get beat when the QB and WR's have a lot of time. So, if we go get a top safety and don't fix the d-line, we will be in the same boat as last season. He will have little impact because QB's and WR's will burn the crap out of him.
I would like a playmaker at every position on the field, that doesn't mean we can get it. Safety is not on the list of major concerns for next season. As I said, it is a need, but not a need that warrents a first rounder. We can get a guy in a later round that is really athletic but needs taught the game. Then when one of our guys is ready to hang it up, he can take over.Comment

All right, this will get old quick. We have a Nelson lover and we have a Carriker lover, it all comes down to preference. There are playmakers at safety after the first-round too, as well as at defensive end, and even left end. It just comes down to preference. Nelson or Carriker would be excellent selections for us.Comment

If carriker falls to us I don't care if Nelson is on the board, Carriker is gonna be a great great player and imo is the only end I would want us to take other than possibly Gaines Adams (who we have NO SHOT at) in the first.Bronco fan from Packer Land.

You are saying that our d-line is fine?
I don't get that at all. If we had two Reeds back there, they would get burnt all the time because we DONT HAVE A D-LINE THAT CAN GENERATE PRESSURE. If the other teams offense has a lot of time, all of the time, a safety won't make a bit of difference.Comment

Originally posted by Alps2315I agree completely. If we can get Nelson without moving up to get him, then we still have our other picks to make a difference. Remember, we would still have Plummer, Foster, and T. Bell to move up into the second round with one of our 3rds to give us two seconds if we wanted to. If we pick up Nelson, we could let Lynch play in the box and leave Champ on his island and Nelson would be able to sit in the middle of the field and read the play, which is one of his biggest strengths.
