one scenerio I might see if this would be true is getting briggs from the bears if we trade wilson. I was reading somewhere that the bears are looking at trading up as well. If we did get the sixth, trade our later 1st rounder for briggs and maybe a late pick?

He played the part that was asked of him. As for the mistakes, go back and check any player's plays for the season and show me how Al had more mistakes than is typical for his position. He is more than heart, he is still a very good player. The coaches and players around the league apparently believe that judging by yet another Pro Bowl.

And yet he missed one whole game (two in his career) due to injury. I'm pretty sure his missed game in '05 was when we rested starters in the final game but would have to double check.


He'd be a bigger cap hit if we traded him due to accelerated bonus money.


I would be very surprised. I think Shanny values leadership, in addition to Al being a very good player. But anything's possible, including friction in the background of which we fans are unaware.


Nice "homerism" jab. Just because somebody has a higher opinion of a player than you doesn't invalidate that person's opinion. But if your argument requires the "homer" taunt then it just illustrates your weak foundation. Please try to just argue the facts rather than slipping insults.

It wasn't "homers" that voted Al back to yet another Pro Bowl. If the players and coaches didn't think he deserved it then he wouldn't have gone. And if his trade value is high, as you mentioned, then others teams, who have the resources to look back at every single play he made, must still think he's a top-tier player. If he was as average as you imply then his trade value wouldn't be as high as you think.

The homer comment was not a jab at you, it was for everybody. A lot of posters are too high on Wilson, thinking he is the greatest MLB in the NFL. I personnally think he has lost a step, has not played up All Pro standards the last two years and is not earning his big paycheck. I believe he is a good player, but not an elite one.

His play is declining and if Shanny can grab a possible stud DE for the next 10 years in either Adams or Anderson in the top ten for Wilson and two lower picks, I think it will be a good deal. Off the field Wilson seems to be a "good guy" for the defense, but on the field he hasn't been impressive at all in the last two years.

I guess we'll just have to disagree (which is not against the rules or anything ). While I don't think Wilson is All-World or anything, I do think he's one of the top LBs in the game and is deserving of his Pro Bowl status.

But let's say my assessment is wrong and yours is right (unlikely but possible ), don't you think other GMs would know that, too? They wouldn't just trade for Wilson based on his reputation, they'd actually go back and watch game film for the past couple years, check his injury history, etc. And if they agree that Al hasn't been impressive these past two years then there's not a snowflake's chance in hell we're getting a top 10 pick for him.

Either way, I'd say the point of this thread is moot.

The idea of trading Wilson is pure insanity.

He made some mistakes last year? Gee, nobody else ever makes mistakes. He still managed to go to the Pro Bowl despite a better known Ray Lewis not being voted in (he was only an alternate).

Al Wilson is a known quantity, and he's a really good quantity. Why would we trade that for an overpriced risk? You know how many of the top 10 picks flop? Far too many to risk losing the heart and soul of our defense, and perennial Pro Bowler at that.

1) Wilson is the heart and soul of our defense

2) We're seriously thin at LB behind our starters

3) He's a perennial Pro Bowler

4) He's a needed team leader

5) No draft pick is a sure thing and it would be too risky to lose a sure thing in a trade

6) The #6 pick will probably make about as much as Wilson does right now... and he could very well flop

7) Wilson still has four years left on his contract. Including contract restructures, Wilson's prorated salary cap hit would probably be around $7 million - $8 million which means we'd probably lose some more cap space by trading him... something in short supply and would be desperately needed for the #6 pick.


Especially for those who are critical of Shanny's drafting ability, why would anyone want to trade a top-notch player for a freaking draft pick?

Somebody in Denver posted a question in todays paper asking if the rumpr was true.

The question should be answered in tommorrows paper, anway it was said that Al Wilson is on the trading block to washington for a striaght across trade for the their number 6 pick in the draft.

Another scenairio was Al and Bly for Shawn Springs their number 1 pick.

A. Didn't he play with a broken something on his hand almost all year? (black cast on all the time)

B. He made the pro bowl (not cause he's popular, which he isn't)

C. He was carted off the field due to head trauma and he played the next week! That's heart.

D. Any MLB would have not played up to all pro standards (in your opinion) in Coyer's system.

I am not questioning his heart and courage. Remember, he is also not being paid for heart and courage. He is payed for his performance on the field and the last two years, he hasn't quite earned it IMO.

I am not a big Coyer fan, but we can't blame everything on him. We will see how things are this year.
