  • Without question Denver should trade down...

I might be crazy (and you can let me know if I am), but the way I see it the players that would keep Denver from staying put at #21--Carriker, Anderson, Willis, Okoye, Landry etc.--will be gone. The second tier players will be spread out over the next 1-1 1/2 rounds, especially the defensive linemen with all the depth there. Although I would love to see Moss, Johnson, Griffin, Meriweather, etc. in a Denver uniform, they don't excite me like a Carriker, Anderson or Landry would. Why not pick up extra picks and still get the same level of player we would have gotten at #21. Players that will go from round 2-3, such as Moses, Woodley, Spencer, Francis, McDonald will probably be just as good as Moss, Johnson, etc. I like the chances of having 2 to 3 Quentin Moses' as opposed to having 1 Charles Johnson. Add some extra picks for LB depth, OL, etc.

Here's a few ideas: Tade down with Baltimore, NYJ or New England to pick up an extra pick in rounds 2-3. Maybe even tade down a second time for another pick or two in rounds 2-4. Now everyone knows that players slide very year further than all anticipated, so we come up with something like this (in order of want):

Late 1st-Early 2nd: Moss, DE - Johnson, DE - Spencer, DE
(Biggest need by far is defensive line. Must be addressed)

Denver 2nd: Griffin, S - Meriweather, S - Tyler, DT - Abiamiri, DE - Woodley, DE (Add the safety we need or another defensive lineman)

Additional Late 2nd-Early 3rd: Harris, LB - Siler, LB - Beason, LB - Moses, DE
(Get a LB that we now need or maybe another defensive lineman. Heck, if Jarrett or Rice dropped by some freak chance you could even add a young WR)

Denver 3rd (WA): Any DL that has fallen - Rouse, S - Weddle, S - Ugoh, OT
(Again, many possibilities, but BPA or if someone is hanging out there unexpected)

Denver 3rd: Bush, RB - Irons, RB - Everett, LB - Blades, LB - Davis, LB - Thomas, DT
(Get the LB here, needed depth at RB, another defensive limeman or BPA)

Additional 3rd: Anyone above who has dropped, Pitcock, DT - Francis, DE
    (BPA, BPA, BPA, another steal?)

Additional 4th: Harris, OL - Frye, OL - Datish, OL - Mebane, DT - DeOssie, LB
(Some pretty good players here. Remember last year we took Marshall in #4)

    Denver 6th (DET): BPA

    Denver 6th: BPA

    Denver 7th: BPA

Here's my dream scenario in a deep draft:

    1st/2nd- Moss, DE
    2nd-T Tyler, DT
    Additional 2nd/3rd- Jarrett, WR
    3rd- Rouse, S
    3rd- Bush, RB
    Additional 3rd- Francis, DE
    Additional 4th- Blades, LB
    6th- Frye, OL
    6th- Harris, OL
    7th- Burgess, LB

If Shanahan ever came close to anything like this he would have definitely earned the nickname "Mastermind." Oh, it's fun to be GM, but I do remember when Bill Walsh did it and came away with a bunch of All-Pro players on their way to the Super Bowl. Go ahead and fire away now......

I'm all for picing up extra picks... if Shanny doesn't love a Patrick Willis, a Carriker, a Tim Crowder or Jarvis MOss, or a Reggie Nelson... then definately trade down to grab more picks. With 4 picks already in the first three rounds, if we add 2 more or even one more but end up trading up in the second round... Broncos can grab 2 DE, DT, FS and an offensive guy (RB,OL, WR)... now, if we decide not to trade up in 2nd and keep that second pick... or trade Al for a 3rd rounder... then we can grab a LB or another offensive guy...

Anyway... I agree I'll take depth over a risk. Look at MArio Williams vs. Demarco Ryans last year for Texans? I'd rather have 2 DEs from the top 50 picks, then take one (Moss, Crowder)?

Not to mention trading out of the first round saves a ton of money. Go for it, I say...

Partick I don't think he said trade out of the first round rather trade down in the first round with Jets or someone else.

OKBronco, you basically said everything I've been thinking for weeks... after the top guys you mentioned, there is a lot of deep, 2nd-tier talent that is gonna be spread out across the late-1st to early-3rd rounds... I say stockpile picks and nab some guys in the late(r) 1st/ --> mid-2nd that we might have thought about settling for at #21.

Shanahan has always been one to try and get more picks... but I wouldn't be shocked to see him trade UP this year. I think its going to be a trade up, or trade down. I would be really shocked if we pick at 21 this year.

Well, we're in deep something at Dline... I say get the best Dlineman available with the highest pick we can. Stop the bleeding already.

We seem to have plenty of depth on the roster now. If we could find 2 or 3 more impact players, then do whatever it takes.

Btw, the success rate of impact Dline players after the 1st round drops considerably.........I say trade up, but find a way to keep a 2nd and 3rd round pick also.

2nd day picks may have trouble making this roster.
