DNA test linked to Darrent Williams murder

Article Last Updated: 02/05/2007 05:05:14 PM MST

Denver police have obtained a DNA sample from Willie Clark, a man they have named a "person of interest" in their investigation of the killing of Denver Broncos player Darrent Williams, 9News reported today.

Citing unnamed sources, 9News said that police negotiated to take the DNA sample from Clark, who is in custody on an unrelated parole violation.

It was not clear why police wanted the DNA sample from Clark. Police sometimes use DNA evidence to help determine whether or not a suspect was at the scene of a crime.

Clark is the only person identified by police as someone they want to question in connection with the death of Williams in a drive-by shooting early New Year's Day.

Williams was a passenger in a limousine on Speer Boulevard when several shots were fired from a Chevrolet Tahoe that had pulled alongside. One of the bullets hit Williams in the neck, killing him.
Police sources have previously said they believe Clark was in the Tahoe at the time of the shooting but was not the gunman. Today, sources told 9News that Clark is suspected of having been driving the Tahoe at the time.

Michael Andre, Clark's attorney, did not return phone calls today. Previously he has declined to say whether Clark is cooperating with police in the Williams investigation, and said he had no information linking his client to the Chevrolet Tahoe.

9News also reported today that an attorney has been negotiating with Denver police and the district attorney's office regarding another person in connection to the Williams case.

Again citing unnamed sources, 9News said that the attorney's client, who is a suspect in Williams' murder, is attempting to negotiate a plea deal with authorities.

It was not clear what if any role the unidentified person is believed to have had in the Williams case.

Police officials and and the district attorney's office would not confirm the 9News report.

Several names of possible suspects have surfaced in connection with the Williams case, but police have not announced the names of any suspects in the football player's death.
