  • Our top need for 2008

I dont care what the draft class is like for each position, we've already been through that, I want to know what you think is the top area of need for the broncos this offseason. Just state the position and your reason. It could be DT LB S OT RB WR whatever just justify your argument. I say LB is our top need. Yes DJ is a stud but behind him their is an aging and not as effective Ian Gold and behind him there is very little depth and talent.

    Feel free to disagree

        1. DT is the top need, in my opinion
        2. OT (What can I say? Games are won in the trenches)
        3. OLB
        4. RB
        5. S (assuming Lynch is back for one more year or else this is #2)
        6. WR (if Walker leaves or else not a need at all)

            DT

Hands down this is our biggest need. I think it'll be addressed before the draft (trade or free agent). I think Elvis-Moss-Crowder are young DEs, and Marcus Thomas is a nice DT, but raw. A lot of youth here.

Ekuban-Mallard-Peterson-Engelberger bring some experience, but nothing earth shattering.

SO, to me, it makes sense to bring in a play-making starter at DT, maybe even an extra body... THEN, come draft... Take a gamble on someone in the 4th and hope for another Elvis-Thomas-Marsh... Try to hit a HR. Of course, if Dorsey-Ellis fall to us in the first... Pull the trigger... Otherwise, too much of a risk to gamble a high pick on some guy like Balmer?

I think our top need is safety. With Lynch pondering retirement and Ferguson being a free agent, we have no depth back there. I know we have Abdullah but he misses alot of tackles. The safety spot needs some youth and speed injected into it.

DT would be the next biggest need. The DT position has become a revolving door. Marcus Thomas showed flashes but wore out late in the season. Mallard is better suited for DE. McKinnley is better when he's rotatied in. If we obtain Shoun Rodger or Corey Williams, DT wont be this high but one will still need to be added through the draft.

OT has to be next. With Lepsis retiring it leaves a big hole to fill. Im not sure if Ryan Harris is the answer a LT. Pears did a decent job but isnt overly dominant. I could see where Clady would be a nice pick up or even Jordan Gross in FA but that might be costly.

                1. DT
                2. OT
                3. Backup DT
                4. FS
                5. WR
                6. OLB
                7. P
Hoping for a defensive-minded head coach and a return to the ZBS on offense. At the very least, no more cheaters for head coach.

I'd say DT or OLB. Problems pluggin and problems keyin.

Here's my take, pretty much in order from most critical to not as from top to bottom:

DT (Huge lack of both talent and depth here, undoubtedly the main cause of our porous defense, especially against the run.)
OT (Ryan Harris is an unknown, and Pears has never impressed me when i've watched him. Keeping Jay upright has to be a top priority.)
                    LB (outside and inside)
WR (pending the release of J-Walk)
                    S (especially if Lynch retires.)
RB (a feature back would help immensely. Travis Henry is not reliable nor young enough to be the guy, at least not long-term. Selvin Young and Andre Hall are strictly backups.)
P (we'll see about this Paulescu guy. Still, I'd like to see a Durant Brooks or Mike Dragosavich added sometime on the draft's 2nd day. A great punter is a great, often underappreciated weapon.)

I think LB is our biggest need, I dont think our DL is as big as a area as others, I like our young guys, but LB was crap last year, including DJ Williams, although he did get better as the year went on, we couldnt cover the short passes out of the back field, espesially on 3rd down, we didnt or couldnt blitz, and the tackling was garbage,

If this is true... LB would go from a problem to a strength if DEN drafted TWO LBs in April... Imagine Rivers-Connor in the first and Henderson-Lofton-Goff in the 2nd.

I know this is crazy... but... It would give DEN 3 quality LBs!

                        Rivers/Connor-DJ-Henderson/Lofton/Goff

Silly... I know... chances are we sign Boss Baily and draft a LB in the 2nd... and that helps as well!

It's defensive tackle by a mile.

If we fail to get a at least one true run stuffing, havoc causing DT then our season will be a repeat of '07.

well we dont pick in the top 4, so we will not get that type of DT in the draft, I think we already have that guy in thomas, and if we can get some deph then great, but even the top two dts this year are not going to make a huge impact in there 1st year, DT seems like they always take awhile to develop, hate to say it but if we want another impact DT this year it is going to have to be through free agency or trade
