  • Webster before Gold

I believe that Gold is not a HUGE need, but is a need on the list.

Webster should be way ahead of Gold on the list, a small SOLB who is NOT "good" at all, nor acceptable so far. He is way sub-par. He has to engage blockers, and he doesn't have the adequate size. He should be replaced before Gold.

Gold does everything fine, he's middle of the pack in the League, he's not good, can be at times, but he's a solid "par." He covers TEs, doing a pretty good job. He's fast and mobile, great sideline to sideline speed.

Some people may doubt his tackling, but they just make him more vocal than Webster's tackling. He makes normal whiffs, and I don't see any excess of whiffing, misses, or anything else. Winborn misses more than Gold from what I've seen. Everyone also makes mistakes, such as Bailey having a CLEAR open field tackle on Jason Witten in the Pro Bowl but failing to successfully tackle him.

Not intended as a defend Gold thread, but just saying that SOLB should be upgraded before WOLB.

SOLB does not play as big of a role as WOLB

and you dont see an excess of whiffing . . . .

go watch the Titans game and there you will have every single reason why gold should be one of the first player gone this off-season. terrible tackling terrible coverage, terrible shedding . . . . basically as terrible of a game as a LB could have - minus the one fumble he got from being in the right place because of a missed tackle

Nate Webster would have to stand in line for poor LB play from our crew, which was in abundance last year.

DJ Williams, Ian Gold and Webster all had their moments when they were terrible...but overall, the argument of this post is incorrect, as Webster definitely outplayed Ian Gold last season.

But ideally, both players will be gone, although Webster would be welcomed back as a backup....but Ian Gold needs to be gone.

Shall the thunder of MUG cause rain on this thread.

They will most likely be kept 1 more year. Both are backups and may just play in those roles next year.

I dont think either of them will be here much longer but I think Gold has just lost a step because of age. This is why I have our top need as LB. After DJ we dont have much to brag about.

Ian Gold used to survive on his speed. He was a "cover" linebacker, he would make his money covering tight ends and pursuing runningbacks. As we saw this year, he got owned by Dallas Clark, Tony Gonzales, Antonio Gates and even a few lesser tight ends. He just didn't have the speed to cover them. His tackling also got so poor that running right at him was a good option because even if he hit you he wouldn't wrap the ball carrier.

Gold showed a complete inability to seperate from blockers and was a virtual non-factor as a zone player.

Webster was by means good, he lacked the speed to pursue the runner to the sideline, he had problems disengaging blockers and he missed some tackles. But he did jam up the line better and the overall gap coverage was better on his side.

Webster is still efficient as a backup player as his skillset is better suited for the MIKE position. Gold on the other hand can play no other position than WLB and as he demonstrated to abundance this year, he just doesn't cut it anymore. Gold has no value on ST and little value as backup.

I don't like either, the solution is simple. Cut them both and sign Boss Bailey to man the weakside, then draft Quentin Groves in the 2nd to man the SAM spot!

more like sign Bailey to play SAM, and draft Xavier Adibi in the 2nd round to play WILL. D.J. stays in the middle.

I hear a few rumors that Ali Highsmith is falling, if he would fall into our lab in the 2nd, that would be awesome. He will start WLB from day 1 and dominate!

DJ, Highsmith and whoever is manning the SLB, will be a strong group with a lot of athletisism.

Don't be stingy in letting both Gold and Webster go. They both stink.
