  • Kenny Phillips

With the combine being over do you think we could possibly get Kenny with our second round pick? I mean all the safeties in the draft were not to impressive. They all looked like they need work. The best prospects after work outs for safety this year are converted corners. I mean could getting the best player available for your system take over and we just don't see a safety go in the first. If he does get out of the first then who will select him in the second?

Dolphins - shouldn't even though they don't have a stand out safety but if they don't select a QB in the first I expect them to get one here especially if only one or two are off the board.

Rams - pretty solid at safety with Atogwe and Chavous

Falcons - could possibly look safety here but i just don't see that being an immediate concern with all the roster moves already.

Raiders - they have had a very solid secondary the last couple years so I don't expect safety to picked here

Chiefs - already making the transition to younger talent. wouldn't expect them to add another youngster to the mix.

Jets - same situation as the chiefs

49ers - assuming they still have this pick and haven't had a selection yet in the draft, safety is not the player the will select.

Ravens - simply not a need for them

Bengals - This could possibly be the first potential treat for that to happen. The bengals are a pretty terrible secondary and could be hoping tremendously that Kenny slips this far.

Saints - I think the saints will select a corner in the first round so just a hunch, i don't think they will be selecting a safety in the second. Harper is young and they have decent vets as of now.

Bills - young guys are already in buffalo and i believe neither are in jeopardy of their jobs being gone.

So that leaves us. Now i do realize that the top rated true safety will have just sat thru 41 picks but it is a guy who had a so-so workout and a so-so college year. A guy that might even go behind converted corners because they are faster and no character issues. I also understand that there are about 5 teams below us that are looking for safeties in the second but I am trying for argument sake just to pretend no trading up occurs. This is the top rated safety so many teams will see him on the board this late and get to excited and trade up things like this happen i know but what do you think the odds are of this happening?

    NO WAY

I was wondering a similar thing but not can they get him with the 2nd pick but maybe trade down in the 1st and still draft him.

If so I think that is by far the best draft 1st round scenario that Denver could have.

not sure about the best but id be happy with it. there is no way he makes it back to us in the second but i see him lasting untill early 20s so if we trade down and grab some extra valuable picks then hell yeah im all for it

Ive been saying it since i watched him the first game of last year. OVERATED!! we dont need him nor want him.

I wouldnt mind trading back into the bottom of round 1 for this guy at the right price but not too much. Demps is good also and will be available on day 2.

Agreed.... This guy has horrible instincts and does not make the best decisions. Then you combine it with suspect reaction and fluidity skills at the combine and this guy should fall. I don't want him at all. I would pass on him with our second round pick as well. Let him keep on sliding.

I believe he ran a 4.55 40, and his stock to a huge hit and is continuing to fall. But I don't think he'll be there in the second.

I dont think theres a chance he falls out of the first round.

Sean Taylor ran a 4.52 I believe. Theres plenty of games where he has shown he can close quickly.

Now, he did probably fall out of the top fifteen-20ish range though....

I didn't hear anything about his stock falling. 4.5 is fairly average for a safety.

If we can get him in the second I wouldn't mind, but I don't really feel good spending a 1st on him.

There were several draft experts that suggested possibly 0 safeties would be drafted in the first round. This was before the combine. Phillips at 12 was always a huge reach. I don't think his stock is dropping. But it is certainly not shooting up the boards either.

He needed a huge combine to push himself up the board. The concerns about Phillips are poor decision making and reaction times. The hope was that his pure athleticism would make up for some of that. But then to see him come in at the times he did and then the reports of his lack of fluidity in the position drills; this will not push him up the draft board. He has been way to high on this message board because so many out here think our primary weakness is safety and he is the top safety.

But let's be clear. Just because he comes from Miami does not mean he is the same player as Taylor or Reed. His football skills are not near those players and he certainly did not play as well in college as those guys did. Comparing his 40 times to theirs is simply not fair to them. Phillips is at best late first round; only because of the weak safety crop this year. If it wasn't for the poor safety pool he would definately be a second rounder.

Personally I would hope we would pass on him in the second as well. We have other needs we could address with higher quality players.

I can't believe you just did that (Sean Taylor's appeal was about a lot more than speed). Phillips is a second rounder. If we are looking to improve ourselves immediately at safety, then we need to sign Wilson. Not waste an early pick on a guy who is an uncertainty.

His potential was determined on him running below a 4.5. He's already one of the players being talked about by Kiper, Mayock, and other analysts as someone who not only didn't help himself at the combine, but possibly hurt himself.

I would take Phillips in the 2nd round. I've cooled off on him in the 1st, but in the 2nd getting him would be a minor steal. Not to mention he would add much needed talent and depth to the safety position.

i think hes a pretty good player, not a player i would want the broncos to draft at number 12, he had a pretty bad combine, but he is still the best safety in the draft in my opinion, and i still think it is our biggest need.
