  • With FA out of control Denver will be in good shape in 2 years

Teams are overspending worse than ever this year but Denver, for once, has decided against joining in. We have had a couple good drafts recently, assuming that at least 2 of our D- lineman from last year pan out, and our focus this year is on the draft again. Maybe this shift in philosophy will bring us success in the not too distant future. If we allow 2 years for these bad contracts like Javon to fall off the cap, then we will have the money to keep our guys like Marshall, Dumerville, Scheffler, Cutler when their contracts are up and we will have young guys who have developed along with them. Bringing in big names who cost a lot hasn't worked recently. The Giants Super Bowl this year wasn't really won by a bunch of free agent pick-ups, it was won with players they developed mostly. Bradshaw, Boss, Smith, were just a few of the rookies who contributed for them right away. Indy the year before had a similar team make up too. I like the change in philosophy and I think it will ultimately make or break Shanahan's job in the next 2 years. Here's to hoping he is our coach for a long time because this plan works out beautifully and returns us to the Super Bowl soon. I'm not gonna hold my breath for next year but anything can happen.

    Good Thought...But

I think you raise a good point, but they are saying that there will be no salary cap after 2 more years! So it won't matter.

Ehhh...with no cap being a possibility in two years, that would be the year to ignore free agency and draft only, sign all your players with big bonuses up front for long-term, same with the rookies and let everyone else overspend, then when a new cap is in place, watch teams having to cut a quarter of their rosters...lol.

I hope there will be a cap forever!

Lets not have this become MLB.. where teams try to buy to win.

That is a possibility but even if there isn't a cap, teams can't keep spending like they are right now or the NFL will end like MLB. The smaller market teams will not be able to compete nearly as consistently. Cap or not, it is smarter to have your own talent developed in house, and the ability to keep them here. The trick is to keep hitting on our draft picks. Can you name a team in recent memory who won a Super Bowl primarily on the high priced Free Agents they brought in? The last one I can think of is Green Bay in 96 with Reggie White. There is something to be said about the trade market though. A veteran brought in by trade for the right price can push a team over the top. Marshall Faulk helped push the Rams, Favre was a trade now that I think of it, but even those situations seem rare. I think if there is no cap in a couple years, the NFL will fall as America's favorite league because the Parody is one of the things that makes it so fun to watch. If it happens though, Denver would have more money than ever to spend if they decide it's necessary? I strongly hope they work out a new CBA that will be good for both sides and keep the NFL as the best run league there is.

Do you realize that in 2 years it is VERY possible there will be no cap?

                Denver: 97-98

                Just not high priced.

Hahaha...actually every team has had a good mix of both...Hell, San Diego did not win their first playoff game till they added Chambers. New England always brings in a good mix, and they have more titles and have more playoff wins then anybody...though it is fair to say they likely employ many film editing specialists for their voyeurism needs!

Chambers was a trade and I would hardly say he pushed them over the top. Some would say no Marty would have more to do with winning a playoff game. A. Thomas is the only impact FA I can think of that NE brought in under a big contract and they have yet to win the Super Bowl with him. Some would say they should hav espent money keeping Samuel or Branch or even Moss after they got him on the Cheap last year. Do you see my point?

                      No Cap= Trouble for NFL!

The NFL is by far the best pro sports league. That is due in part to the salary cap. I hope they don't do away with it. Teams have a chance every year, the stadiums are full, and I think I saw the first Seahawk and Cardinals jerseys worn by fans!

Not having a cap will ruin the NFL. Teams like Seattle and New England will win every year with the gigantic pockets their owners have.

                          Not really.

Free Agency increases the price of top players each year. Next offseason or so, we have to re-sign Brandon Marshall whom will likely get offered twice what Berrian did. That single signing will effect our franchise for years. Especially since a new CBA and salary cap will likely be ironed out. Then, of course, we have to resign DJ Williams, and Tony Scheffler, and Jay Cutler, etc...

We are being cheap this offseason in the hopes of having a prayer to resign our own guys next offseason.

Exactly what I said in another thread. I agree with that statement! I hope we are able to do it.
