  • Welcome back my friends, to the mock that never ends...

It's a Broncos mock, and don't worry - it ends.

#12 and #115 (1264 pts. total) traded to the Detroit Lions for #15 and #76 (1260 pts. total)

What's in it for Detroit? Rashard Mendenhall. They are uneasy about him getting past the Panthers and Bears, and they really don't want him to go to the Bears, so they move up to prevent that and add to their own offensive arsenal. With the recent release of Kevin Jones, RB appears to be a big need for them. Denver essentially moves down 3 spots to upgrade their mid-fourth into a mid-3rd.

#15 - Denver selects WR/PR/KR DeSean Jackson from Cal

I think he is the kind of explosive playmaker our offense needs, and he will help reduce the pressure on Marshall and bring the threat of the deep ball. His added impact as a return man makes him a great piece to continue the effort of improving the special teams too.

#42 - Denver selects DT Pat Sims from Auburn

This kid played great in the SEC and was MVP in his bowl game against Clemson and he could become a Pro-Bowler with good coaching and experience. If he's not a starter right away, he's at least a solid piece to the rotation.

#76 - Denver selects OT Duane Brown from Virginia Tech

Depth to further fortify the protective barrier in front of Jay Cutler.

#104 - Denver selects DT Frank Okam from Texas

Everything about this guy is big - his motivation/conditioning concerns, his talent, his state of origin, and most notably the man himself! He should help the run defense when he's in but will only be used sparingly because we don't want him wearing down and getting winded out there.

#130 - Denver selects C John Sullivan from Notre Dame

This is probably Nalen's last season and although Hamilton will probably replace him, he's no spring chicken either (will be 31 in August) and more depth never hurts.

#140 - Denver selects FB Jacob Hester from LSU

Cecil Sapp is on a one year deal so he may not be back next season, so finding his replacement may be the way to go here. Hester is a truck running with the ball and could find a niche as a short-yardage, goal-line back and on ST.

#174 - Denver selects K Taylor Mehlhaff from Wisconsin

A late round flyer on a kicker who can do place-kicks and kickoffs both very well is the likely order here. He will compete for the job with Prater and possibly Mare or some other vet and even if he doesn't win and is cut as a result, hey - it was only a 6th round pick.

#202 - Denver selects P Mike Dragosavich from North Dakota State

Same type of deal as the previous pick, can't just let this Paulescu guy win the job by default. Drago would have led Division I-AA in punting average as a junior and finished second as a senior if he had enough attempts.

#209 - Denver selects CB Marcus Walker from Oklahoma

I actually think this guy is a late round sleeper. He has a lot of starting experience for a top program and is said to have good athleticism and ball skills. His problems are he is raw technique-wise and has a tendency to gamble a lot. Kinda sounds like Dre Bly, huh? This pick is insurance/depth for the possible departure of Foxworth either this or next offseason.

You still wont have any #2 recieving option, but a good draft none the less.

At least you have a semi-realistic trade.

Sheesh. Brandon Stokley and Tony Scheffler will be #2 WR option. DeSean Jackson will be the wildcard in the offense.

i dont know were we get this "the kind of player denver likes" crap from because i think we just make due with what they have. and that is 2 crappy FBs.

i dont even know why we care if our FB can run the ball, its not like we actually use them too carry the ball a good portion of the time, cecil carried only 18 times with a 3.3 avg while Bell carried 6 times with a .5 avg, i think any FB in the league can match those numbers, and they certainly would be better at blocking than the 2 of them

hester is nothing more than a STer in this league and we should use an earlier pick on a guy that will actually matter to this team, hes the next brian leonard too slow for RB too small for FB and a waste of a draft pick

jackson is not a good pick in my opinion, however i like the other picks so much that ill let it slide. although i may switch dre moore for simms if we get okam as well

I disagree on Hester for a few reasons...

              1) Every team, not just Denver, likes the hardworking kid that will do the dirty work.

              2) He would add weight in the weight room rather than the couch if asked to.

              3) He has hands like Kyle Johnson (I think i got his name right) and when Denver had Kyle, honestly, I looked for him to make plays inside the 5 yardline. Would you not love to have that option back?

Hester could average 3+ yards a carry and recieve around 5 touches (catches and carries) a game and be decently succesful. He is a great pass blocker, and a decent run blocker already. And then on ST, he is probably one of the best STers out of this draft, which never hurt anyones draft stock.

To me, Hester will be a great short-yardage/3rd down/4th down/goal-line back. I remember him carrying the LSU offense down the field in their final drive against the Gators last season which resulted in the game-winning TD. The guy is a truck running the football, he's not the blocker or pure badass that OS is, but he's still a good player. Also, the fact that he will play special teams is nothing to scoff at, our special teams are in need of good players, and I don't think spending a 5th round pick on a guy who can do these things is a "waste of a pick" or whatever.

yes but why not take a nasty guy (schmidt or hillis) who can do exactly the same things and would be a much better player most likely right out of the draft, we wouldnt have to wait for them to add 20 pounds in the weight room.

both peyton and owen ran faster that hester at the combine and both are about avg receiver out of the backfield. all FBs love the dirty work, thats why they are FBs. i would much rather have an instant starter on offense than an instant starter on STs

just my opinion on the kid, not saying hes a bad player im just saying that just because we have used a tweener for a while doesnt mean hes the type of player we like and id much rather spend a 4th on hillis than a 5th on hester

I think that is an excellent draft, though I might opt for Tashard Choice or some other running back instead of Hester. I like Hester, and I like Hillis as a FB option as well. I just think that Cecil Sapp is more than sufficient, even if its just for a season.

Good mock...the only thing I would change would be the 1st round pick......Why dont the Broncos just never select anybody....that way the would get the exact production as drafting D Jackson would give them....But they would save the salery cap and signing bonus money. Take the tackle and make a push for the playoffs, Draft Jackson and cut him in three years, however you would get a top 10 pick next year
Thanx Blondie79 for the sweet Sig....Love it and I will rock it with pridesigpic

come on no one else has anything to say about my wonderful and semi-realistic mock? You don't have to critique it, you can just heap the praise on me, I don't mind.

I think it's a great mock actually Max....

                            Except....

I think Pat Sims is a 3rd-4th Round guy at best. I don't think he's a second rounder. There's a lot of personal baggage there. He wasn't exceptional, or even great, in college. And he is pretty weak and non-athletic.

I just don't see how this guy could be a 2nd Round prospect. Maybe I'm wrong, I don't think I will be though. What I know for sure is I probably would not draft him.

But the rest is fine. I'm on the fence with DeSean Jackson going in the Top 20. His size concerns are legit. I could just as easily see him dropping to the 2nd Round as I could see him being drafted in the Top 20. But who knows. I'd be much happier with James Hardy. I think his risk is minimal and upside is a #1, with the probability being a #1. To me, Jackson's risk is significant and his upside is a #2, with the probability of being a slot.
