  • Shane Olivea?

There aren’t many guys who started 57 of their first 59 games for a perennial playoff team available on the open market come June. Of course, Shane Olivea’s run as a starter ended when he was benched in November but, still, he put in enough quality work with the Chargers to get a six-year deal in 2006.

He was released at the end of February by San Diego and drew some looks from the Jets before they signed Damien Woody to play right tackle. Even with a history of back problems and some of the shorter arms in the NFL, it’s surprising that Olivea hasn’t found gainful employment for the 2008 season. Well, it would be if he hadn’t found employment with a mystery team.

The 49ers, looking for depth behind Jonas Jennings and Joe Staley, inquired about Olivea’s availability recently but, according to the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat, were told that he’d already agreed to terms with another team. He’s expected to sign with said team in June, presumably after they cleared some cap space. If Olivea were a wide receiver I’d put my money on the Saskatchewan Rough Riders but he isn’t, which makes things much tougher.

Who could it be? Baltimore, Carolina, Denver, Detroit and Oakland all fit the bill as teams that might welcome some veteran competition for the right tackle spot but almost everyone could use some depth.

He's a little big for what we use on our o-line and he's not as athletic as we need our lineman to be. I wont welcome a guy who protected stupid Phillip Rivers....

Bring him in to compete for the starting RT spot. He has been a pretty good player there for San Diego for a while. He's not any worse than who we already have vying for the position.

Olivea might be a good idea as a back up that comes in on obvious pass downs. He could help provide the kind of protection the Broncos seem to lack in those situations.

That being said, it's unlikely the Broncos are the mystery team.

6'4" 312lbs and that's big for what we use? I'd say maybe in the past, but I'm not so sure now when we're drafting a guy 6'6" 320lbs in the first round. Oh and that Holland dude we have is in the 300's too..

Anyway, I wouldn't mind bringing him in for some competition.. it's not like Erik Pears is a sure fire thing anyway..

yeah just depth, though i think he'll have to compete with harris kuper, pears, and some other guys just to make the team. my problem is, of course, with his size and arms since it seems our RTs arms are getting shorter and shorter. also, im not sure i want to here the cometators say "olivea" and think to myself "hey, my friend's sister's name is olivea!" but thats just me. much rather have a guy with a name like ebunezar ekuban.
