  • Owen Schmitt to be cut from Seahawks?

"The word out of Seattle is that free-agent addition T.J. Duckett could end up on the bubble, as even head coach Mike Holmgren has admitted that he’s not sure just how to use the burly running back. If the Seahawks decide to keep five backs, team insiders believe Duckett will probably be safe. However, if they opt to keep only four backs, either Duckett or fifth-round rookie FB Owen Schmitt could be in trouble."

If this happens and Schmitt is cut we must nab him. We really don't have a good backup to the soon to be starter Hillis. A Schmitt and Hillis combo would be amazing. Both are brutal SOBs and were projected as the number one and two fullbacks in the draft.

I'm extremely happy with the Hillis pick, but I also still like Schmitt.

However there must be reasons they are cutting him. They don't just cut good football players.

Good point. But..... I mean, Mike Holgram isn't new to the NFl and coaching personnel. If they truly didn't know how to 'use' the guy or how to use a FB, why would they draft him to begin with?

I think the guy on college tape looks like a beast. But a lot of times you get those in NFL camps, and you find out they just don't have what it takes. I don't know... not 'knowing' what to do with him doesn't really sound like a reason a team would cut a player if he was worth keeping.

I sure liked Shmitt's size and grit in college, but he was never the polished type player. HE was a favorite around these boards. For that reason, I find it interesting that he's on the cutting board. Thrilled we got Hillis.

Maybe he figured he could work around that and find schemes, but found it too hard? And opposed to going through the entire season with that roster spot filled up by someone he's not very good at using, just might as well save face maybe.

I don't know, and I agree there may be something more. May be using the excuse of not knowing how to use him to help his reputation out and give him another chance?

I'm not sure, I'm glad about Hillis for sure and I will admit Schmitt was a favorite of mine as well. We'll see how this plays out, I'd love to have him but its very unlikely.

Even if he does get cut, I'm fairly confident that the Broncos will pass up on him without thinking twice about it. The Broncos seem to have given up on the pure FB position, and like a fast receiving option as well. We already have a bruiser at FB in Pittman if we keep him there, along with having Sapp.

Anything's possible, but I'm sure we'd rather keep Pittman/Hillis/ Sapp since they've already had a chance to get experience with our players and learned our scheme.

I think you're misreading the article. It's predominantly about Duckett rather than Schmitt. I can't see them cutting the latter to be honest - Holmgren's very keen on his fullbacks, Mack Strong being the prime example.

It sounds to me like it is going to take a little time for Schmitt to develop and the Seahawks may not want to wait. They already have veteran FBs in Leonard Weaver and David Kirtman so there is plenty of good competition over there. The addition of more running backs is just making it more likely for Schmitt to be cut.

Just look at their depth chart:
The official source for NFL news, video highlights, fantasy football, game-day coverage, schedules, stats, scores and more.

We, on the other hand, have Pittman (a converted tailback), C. Sapp (undersized and no hands) and Spencer Larsen (whom hasn't played the position since high school).

Hillis will be the highlight of our FB crew, as he is the only true FB we have.

Schmitt would be a great addition IMO.

I would rather have Schmitt than Sapp, but, probably wont happen.

I think Ben Tate will be the best back taken in the 2010 draft. (5/3/10)

having both hillis and schmitt on the team would be deadly, hillis is the type of fullback who uses his deceptive speed to make big catches out of the backfield and sometimes even can get carries at tailback. he is useful for moving the ball down the field toward the red zone. but schmitt just dominates defenders with brute power and drives people backwards. he could be a big boost to our red zone offense.

Hillis is a pure FB (one at which many scouts rated as the #1 FB in the draft). How many top RBs does he have to lead before people see this?

Thats like trying to suggest Howard Griffith wasn't a pure FB because he was a good receiver out of the backfield.

I've listened to a number of Holmgren interviews, and you have to take what he says with a grain of salt. He's not what I would consider an analytical thinker. Sometimes he says things that are not very well thought out.

If he knew how to use Matt Strong, I'm sure he's smart enough to figure out how to use Schmitt. This is probably just another one of Holmgren's smoke puffs.
