  • *BREAKING NEWS*...our DL still sucks...

    Well,
after today it is PAINFULLY obvious that our defensive line is still poor. This somewhat puts a different perspective onto this draft for me, as I think we need to do some major overhauling of our DLine. Any thoughts?

Here's some D-line prospects I've had a chance to watch and was impressed by:

    DT's:

Sen'Derrick Marks - Auburn (Perhaps the best DT in college football, he's at the top of my list for this position. Probably will come out as a RS Jr.)

Roy Miller - Texas (underrated DT from the Longhorns, lighter and quicker than Frank Okam was)

Ricky Jean-Francois - LSU (although he loses points for saying he would knock Tebow out of them game, and then he doesn't even play. I doubt he comes out anyway though.)

DeMarcus Granger - Oklahoma (he and Gerald McCoy make arguably the best DT tandem in CFB. The shoplifting incident he has raises a red flag on his character though. I know it was only one incident, but still, it is cause for concern. Hopefully he isn't another Tank Johnson for the team that drafts him.)

    DE:

Brian Orakpo - Texas (I've been very impressed with this one. He was creating all kinds of problems for Oklahoma, and Colorado before that. Very good pass-rusher, has the size to be a down 4-3 end but could be even better standing up in the 3-4).

Everette Brown - FSU (similar to Orakpo)

Greg Hardy - Ole Miss (lanky, athletic DE fast enough to chase down a RB in pursuit or beat a tackle off the edge to get to the QB. Definitely a 4-3 DE in the NFL IMO.)

What if the problem is not talent? Slowik who? This team spends too much time waiting for things to come to them and not taking anything. There isn't any urgency. They don't seem to mind losing. I think the biggest problem is attitude and defensive scheme. I don't think Haynesworth could fix this D-line.

Peterson played well when not double and triple teamed. I dunno.

Orakpho doesn't have the body type to be a 3-4 end. Besides, most teams use the converted end in the 3-4 as a pass rush only type player. Orakpho's more complete than that, and he's not that elite at pass rushing. He'd be a great fit for us. Unfortunately, he'll probably be gone within the first ten picks, and we won't be able to sniff the guy. Other than that, this is all I've got to add:

        Greg Middleton, DE, Indiana
        Height: 6-3. Weight: 275.
        Projected 40 Time: 4.82.
Projected Round (2009): Top 25 Pick.
        Notes: Registered a nation-high 16 sacks in 2007.

already posted elsewhere, Middleton won't be coming out unless he completely turns around his season

Not THAT bad. Just a couple holes here and there. As I said in another thread, the Jags feast on the 3-4 when it comes to running. We would've done it against the Steelers but our O-Line played terrible. You guys absolutely contained Fred Taylor.

I think the Broncos should've taken Grady Jackson from FA.

Amen, I was begging for them to make a move like that, too bad they don't think like us!

Denver is always in the win now mode and Dlineman take a couple years to transition to the NFL as rookies. Finally Denver has money to sign Free Agents without circumventing the salary cap. Denver can go after Haynesworth, who will not be franchised, Julius Peppers who is having a good year and still pass rushing beast, or <cough> Terrell Suggs, if shanny is serious about the 3-4/4-3 hybrid defense. other needed positions such as LB and S can start right away as a rookie and have success. This doesn't mean DLine wont be drafted it just means that other positions can now be a higher priority in the draft.

That reason alone is the reason for Denver not having above average defenses year in and year out. If we TRULY want to be successful and be legitimate superbowl contenders year in and year out, we must build from the inside out (lineman)

DeMarcus Ware is a complete player at 3-4 OLB, and if Orakpo's a future top 10 pick like you suggest, he could be a complete 3-4 OLB too. And judging by his play this season, he IS an elite pass rusher. I also fail to see how he doesn't have the body type to be a 4-3 OLB.

The youth is there. Crowder/Thomas/Moss/Dumervile. The problem in the past is Shanny bringing in washed up lineman (Sam Adams/Simeon Rice) into the equation. Haynesworth/Suggs/Peppers are still in their early primes. They all have had success in the NFL and their experience along with the youth movement is what makes a successful defense. IMO Haynesworth is the key. Suggs and/or Peppers would just be icing on the cake. Then in April, Denver needs to draft a sure fire leader for that defense with their first round pick, whether a Safety or MLB it needs someone with attitude.

I 100% agree that we need a leader on this defense. And about the youth we currently have, the key about having youth is do you have 'talented' youth. And outside of Dummer, I don't believe we have enough impact/talented youth...

don´t you think that the defensive scheme has anything to do with defense not being very good? and vs KC, defense was doing good in redzone, it was offense that gave defense ****ty field position.
