  • My mock 1.0 (4 rounds)

As of week 6, I think that our biggest needs are DE, S, MLB, DT, in that order.

Round 1: Greg Hardy, DE- Old Miss--6'5'', 260lbs.

I would honestly rather have one of the top three safeties (Rolle, Moore, Mays), but I just don't see them falling out of the top 20. That leaves Kam Chancellor as the next best option and I just don't like the value at that pick. I also really like Aaron Curry, however he suffers the same fate as he is rising up draft boards like crazy. Brandon Spikes is also an option that I wouldn't mind, however at this point I think Nate Webster is playing very well and is improving week to week. IMO, there just aren't many elite DTs in this class. I really don't see much difference in a DT that will go in the first, and one that will go late in the second or even the third. So that leads me to Greg Hardy. He is definitely big and strong enough to be effective against the run. AND, he is also very good at collapsing the pocket and getting pressure on the QB. Last year he had 10 sacks and 18 tackles for a loss. I also like that he is that dominant in the SEC, the best conference in the NCAA. Hardy could come in a start right away at Right End, and Dumervil could come in on passing downs. Lets face it, Doom is not very good against the run, and when those passing downs come along, he is usually too tired and worn down that he can't get into the backfield. This way, he gets to focus on rushing the QB. I still haven't given up on Moss, but I am not willing to pass up on someone this good. If Moss turns out to be the DE that I hope he will, then great, we will have a lot of very good depth on the D Line, which is always a good think. And, who knows, maybe he will end up making the change to outside linebacker.

    Round 2: Tyson Jackson, DE- LSU--6'5'', 292lbs

OK, the only safety that worth taking in round 2 that MIGHT still be there, is Patrick Chung, but I honestly don't think he is worth the pick. I just don't see much difference between him and others we can get later. Spikes will be gone. I like McKillop and Brinkley, but I just don't see either one of them being a clear cut starter. As I have indicated in other threads, I am VERY high on Jackson. He is a beast. I watched him man handle everyone that UK threw at him last year when we upset the national champs. I have been watching him ever since and he is the best Left End prospect in the 09 draft. He is definitely a huge upgrade over E60, EE, and Crowder. Shanny wants to stop the run, well this guy can do it. He is also strong enough to push OLinemen backwards and help collapse the pocket. He will definitely draw many double teams. I don't know if he will still be there or not, but many "experts" have him falling to round two or even round three.

    Round 3: Emmanuel Cook, SS-South Carolina-- 5'10'', 215lb

Unfortunately, I just watched this guy beat the crap out of Kentucky this week. He is short, but I think that helps him as far as tackling is concerned. It gives him a lower center of gravity which allows him to tackle more efficiently. The guy is good and would definitly be an upgrade over Manuel. He would be another drafted starter for our defense to build around.

    Round 4: Curtis Taylor, FS-LSU-- 6'3'', 210lbs

He should be able to contribute right away. He will give McCree a tough fight for the starting job in his first year. He has good height and tackles very well. I have seen him play and he is very underratted. He is a steal if he falls this far, IMHO.

I think adding Hardy and Jackson will allow our front seven to better stop the run, while at the same time they will also put a lot of pressure on the QB. By putting pressure on the QB with our D Lineman, it allows our safeties to stay in coverage and help our corners. This allows Champ and Dre to be able to take the risk of trying to intercept a pass without worrying about a WR going for six if they don't pick it off, because the safeties are there to help. Shanny has built one hell of an Offense. That took some time. So will building the Defense. I think addressing the above positions will give us the best chance at getting off on the right foot.

While I can't argue against this draft, I wouldn't mind seeing a variation of positions taken. Like we did this last draft. We drafted players for most of the positions that were a need.

So instead of taking 2 DEs with the first 2 picks, I'd use one to take a DE or DT in the 1st, and either take a MLB or S in the 2nd, then use the 3rd on a DT, S, or DE, whichever hasn't been addressed in the first 2 rounds

Regardless of what we take, I believe we need to spend every pick on a defensive player, with the exception of 1, maybe 2 picks for offensive depth at WR or C

After 2007, I have total prejudice about DEs who weigh less than 270 lbs.

I like the idea of drafting 2 of the same position...

Also when looking at mock drafts this year I want to see two things size and the ability to tackle....

Tyson Jackson, DE- LSU--6'5'', 292lbs is a beast and if the Broncos can get a shot at him in the 2nd round it would be a must....Most boards have Hardy over Jackson ...But not so fast my friend !! Jackson could very well be drafted before Hardy....Only sure fire player atm is Michael Johnson, GT

I would have liked to seen you add the extra rounds and still put effort into landing a MLB in the first four picks ..

What no love for Myron Pryor, Kentucky

Not a bad job at all decent start up mock !

Oh, I have lots of love for Myron Pryor!!! If we land only one UK defender, I hope its him. He is the reason I stopped at round four. I hope he is there in the early fifth, but I doubt he will be. It really depends on how Powell does. If he shows up and does a pretty good job, then I think the need goes more toward a starting quality safety over DT depth. If Powell sucks it up, then I want Pryor in the third or fourth. It really just depends on how well Powell does by the end of the year.

As far as MLB goes, like I said, Webster continues to impress me. I don't like him as the long term option, but if he plays there all next season, I don't think it will hurt us. The only way I want a MLB in the 09 draft is if he is someone who will for sure be able to take the starting spot from day one. Spikes is someone who I think could, and if we go that way I won't be disappointed. But I would rather have Rey or James or Curry, but they won't be there. We can't draft 6 starters on defense in one year. If we can land four this year, and 3 or four next year, we not only improve our starters but, land some good depth. I am comfortable enough with Webster to put MLB off until the 2010 draft if needed.

I would like to see a mock with Both Pryor and George Hypolite the only problem is that go's against the grain with my thoughts about size ...But I think mocksters have a lot of wiggle room with what round they think they will be drafted in...Pryor imo straight up is one of the top 5 DT in the NCAA this year..I will be surprised if he dont go way before Hypolite dont take that the wrong way CU fans ...I just think Pryor is the better of the two and I think the draft boards are off on DT and dont have a good idea on who will go where at this point and time...

Hardy would be a great pick

I think the Broncos will miss the playoffs, so they will be picking in the Top 20.

Ole Miss has one of the best D-lines in college football. Both Hardy and DT Peria Jerry are top prospects, so getting one of them would be good.

I couldn't agree more. It seems like all the DT in the class are about on the same page. No one has really set them self apart from the rest. I think the way they go off the board will be based more on what team needs what type of DT for their particular scheme.

At this point I would like to have Jackson over Hardy because he could play DE in the 3-4 as well as the 4-3 and I'm not sure which way the broncos are leaning. Either way he would be a huge run stopper and pocket collapser. I also think Jackson will go in the first round so no way do we get both. If Jackson were to fall to the second round I would take one of the safeties you named. One of them will be there at our selection. Too many other teams have other needs so I don't think all 3 will be picked in the top 20. I really don't know which is a bigger need anyway. Our safties play terrible but that may be because the Dline can't get pressure so I would be just as happy with S or DE in the first.

In the second I would take Scott Mckillop, LB out of Pitt. He his at the top of the NCAA in solo tackles, tackles for loss, and has 3 sacks so far this season. He is a smart player and always in the right spot. I disagree about his starting ability, I think he will be an excellent player in the NFL.

In the third, best safety available. Kevin Ellison or Chung might be worth it here.

In the 4th another DE or DT. DE Pannel Egboh or DT Dorell Scott would be good here.

Well Fili Moala had the inside track but lost some buzz after the USC loss...Many feel it is all USC hype /shrug

I really dont know what he is doing if anyone gots stats on him... I dont think he comes out this year....

No one is catching my eye anything near like Dorsey and Ellis last year and that the type of buzz is what you want from a player imo and it needs to be all year long not just the final game and at the combine to even consider a drafting DT on day one...

First off, I appreciate your feedback.

Second, IMO, I hope one of the top safeties does fall to us, but I just have my doubts. I agree with what you said about our safeties not being able to do well due to the D Line. Not saying they are good by any means, but improving the DLine automatically helps your LBs and Safeties.

Third, I personally think Jackson will probly go in that late first, early second range, but as of right now, most "experts" have him falling as low as the third round for some reason. So that is why I have him falling to us in the second round.

And I am a fan of McKillop, I am just not certain that he would be able to beat out Webster in his first year or two. And our defense needs to fill starting position ASAP. I am not saying he will be a backup in the NFL, just saying I don't know that he will start right away for us, and thus I feel we have more important spots to fill.

260-270 is probably about the avg size for a 4-3 DE in the league and really a decent size for them

Al Woods is almost certain to stay for his senior year. I think he's LSU's 4th or 5th DT. He would be well-served to stay and showcase himself as a starter next year (assuming he wins a starting spot, which he should considering he was a 5* out of high school). If he came out this year, he would be drafted based on the potential, but he would probably be a 3rd or 4th rounder at best because he hasn't had a chance to do much.

There is no Ellis or Dorsey right now. One could emerge though. I like Sen'Derrick Marks a lot, and nfldraftcountdown rates Peria Jerry as the best DT and a top 20 prospect.
