  • Interim GM (Turkey Day Edition)

Poor Elevation fired from the same job twice!

    Here goes nothing!

    Free Agency

    1. DT Albert Haynesworth - When Titans won their 10th game Albert became a Free Agent. He cannot be franchised. Haynesworth is what makes the Titans D click. He has his moments of lapses but he brings attitude to the Denver Defense. He will command quite a bit of money but is worth every penny for the mean streak he brings and he can ANCHOR the DLINE in DENVER for years to come.

    2. WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh - Who? What? Why? We have Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal with Stokley. Why do we need another WR? First, with the not so fun and gun offense Denver has run this season and the injuries and 'suspensions' to WR, one can never have enough. Second TJ is a classy individual who has great hands and runs great routes. Reminds me quite a bit of Rod Smith. Finally.....well you will see!

    3. CB Dunta Robinson - Was an outstanding CB until he had 2 devastating injuries last year. ACL/Torn Hamstring. He has been activated off PUP and after couple games reclaimed his starting job with Houston (which isnt saying much). Due to injuries he wont be a hot commodity and would be a steal for Denver. He can start opposite Champ and put Bly at nickel or vice versa.

    DRAFT

My draft will be controversial and will get this interim a new title or more hate mail than anyone alive! I make 1 trade in the offseason. Jay Cutler cannot grow and mature as a QB if his primary target will not grow with him. Look closesly at all but the first game this year and you see Jay Cutler force balls to Brandon Marshall when other receivers are open. No matter the down, the score, or situation it is always the same. The reason? They are best of friends and Cutler seems to be forcing the issue to get Marshall what he needs to break all the records that Marshall said he would do. The results of his actions? Denver is lucky to be 6-5, Marshall gets frustrated and never heard from in games other than lucky bomb catch or his frustrated actions on the field. Denver has a plethora of weapons on offense yet Jay will throw to Brandon with double or triple coverage. This will stop once ....

Brandon Marshall is traded to the Philadelphia Eagles for one of their two first round picks. TJ steps up as the new #1 WR and the offense is reborn.

    Round 1

1a.) (From Philadelphia) Aaron Curry OLB Wake Forest - I have seen Wesley Woodyard Just Shut Up and play. Play quite well at WLB too. Yes he is small and he will get bigger and due to his aggressive but controlled play at WLB I foresee DJ Williams going back to MLB. That leaves SLB as the main priority and we all know Boss Bailey is not the answer. Denver has always had great LB corps and they draft the stud Aaron Curry to complete a great trio for years to come.

Aaron Curry is a tackling machine. He has an attitude. What separates him from the rest is he is great against the run and lives for tackling behind the line of scrimmage. Exactly what Denver needs on Defense. With Haynesworth up front it will free up the linebackers to do their thing which is what Denver Defense hasn't been able to do in a long while.

1b.) Terrence Cody NT Alabama (Junior) - He says he is coming back for his senior year. If Alabama wins the National Championship, he bails for the NFL. This pick solidifies the Denver run defense for many years. Denver is notorious for their DLine rotation and honestly cannot go wrong with a rotation that will have either Haynesworth/Cody or both in it. Cody is a beast of a man who most will say is more suited as NT for 3-4. In Denver's defense he would possibly be the most valuable player on the field if he can translate his success from college to pro's. This is a luxury pick for Denver and with the 2 first round picks Denver has solidified the middle of their defense for years to come.

    Round 2

2.) Emmanuel Cook SS South Carolina (Junior) - The safety Denver has been missing since Steve Atwater. He drops to round 2 due to size but makes up for it with Bob Sanderesque qualities. A hard hitter, Cook strikes fear in any opponent entering the secondary. A sure tackler which Denver safeties umm well you know....Finally he is fast 4.4 speed, he is a silver bullet waiting to wreak havoc in his wake. The first 3 picks of my draft have given the Denver Broncos defense an identity for years to come. They will stuff the run and knock heads off across the middle. Cook will lead the charge.

    Round 3

3.) James Davis RB Clemson - 'Thunder' of Clemson's Thunder/Lightning RB duo. Extremely durable, tough, and his vision make him a threat, but his understanding of the game, especially the blocking aspect, is what makes him invaluable. He drops to the 3rd round because of a not so good senior year because Clemson just plain sucks. He will be a great 2 down back a bruiser in the Pittman/Torain mold but without the injury problems. His biggest pitfall is his receiving, not much of a receiver. Denver's new offense seems to not rely on the running game as much, so that means they need a reliable bruiser to beat up the front seven and punish the secondary. James Davis can do this and also help keep Cutler up right with his excellent blocking.

    Round 4

4.) Derek Walker DE Illinois - Ekuban and Engleberger are getting old. Tim who? Why haven't we seen Tim Crowder at all? Derek Walker possesses great natural instincts. His greatest asset is his run stopping ability. His weakness is pass rushing but he does have some talent in that department. His power rush end abilities would be a great compliment to the speed rushers Moss/Dumervil but mostly he can stop the run. Another body to rotate in on the DLine to replace Crowder since noone seems to know where he is at.

    Round 5

5.) Quan Cosby WR Texas - This is my homer pick. He falls in the draft due to his age. He played minor league baseball before playing football with Texas. Very mature individual with good speed and a perfect fit for slot in Denver. I know people are all on the Shipley bandwagon, but Quan beats Shipley in the durability department. Quan can be the KR for Denver especially if Aldridge cannot get healthy. He can understudy to Stokley and with Rod Smith to help be the next best thing for Cutler.

    Round 6

6a.) Kory Sperry TE Colorado State

Durability is a concern with Sperry, but the talent is there to succeed at the NFL. Graham is not getting any younger and Scheffler cannot stay healthy. Smart TE who is mentally ready for the NFL, can block (some) and catch effectively. Will be a special teamer and 3rd TE learning under Daniel Graham.

6b.) Tyronne Green G Auburn - Fits the mold of a Broncos lineman. He has good athleticism in space and exhibits the ability to stay on blocks. Green is more of a finesse blocker that uses his feet to get around on D-tackles and create running lanes inside. Not to mention he faces NFL caliber DLineman almost if not every week.

    Round 7

7a.) Ian Johnson RB Boise State - Another outstanding Special Teamer. Denver has shown this year that they can never have too many RB. He is nothing too special but is very durable can grind out the tough yards and is very good at catching passes out of the backfield. A team player very mature and well respected.

7b.) Anthony Scirrotto S Penn State - Another Special Teamer but someone who has a nose for the football. Drops this far because of off the field issues but is durable and would make a good back up at the safety position.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

There you have it. I know the Marshall trade will make a flame retardant suit necessary but I will take my lumps. I hope y'all tear it apart while enjoying your Turkey Day. This will probably be my only mock until sometime during the offseason. This would be dreamy for me and I think Denver would highly benefit from this draft/FA signings/Trades.

dream on, we barely have a chance at one of those FA's. Although I wouldnt mind going all out for Haynesworth.

I like the Cook and Davis picks. DJ is fine where hes at, and although Curry is a hell of a player, we would need spikes or Laurinitis more.

I don't think we should trade Marshall.

I wouldn't mind having T.J. but that will likely never happen. I don't think we'd be able to afford him AND keep our other top guys.

I'm fine with drafting safeties, God knows we need 'em... but I'd like to see a lot more D-Line drafting than secondary. and I don't think WR is a need right now at all.

We need to focus on: D-Line, Safeties, RB. that's the major part of our draft we need to accomplish.

Also I agree with your round 7a pick

i'll correct you though, that he is a bit more than special. As you said Ian can grind down defenses... and yes he'd be a great special teams guy as well. Also I agree with his ability to catch in the backfield (and as a receiver)...

one thing you missed is his ability to find the hole, and exploit it. He does have his moments of trying to "dance" his way into a big gain, but for the most part Ian is very patient and he almost always waits for a hole to open up and then he's gone before you know it.

also I can't wait until Kellen Moore is a senior. Hey Shanny, if he continues to grow you'll want to look toward Boise for a solid backup for Jay. :salute!:

          Good List!

Now that I've acknowledged the sheer stunning greatness of it let me play devil's advocate.

Signing that stellar group of FAs could create cap problems (I believe), and the prospects of actually succeeding are quite low, anyways. I'll defer to the capologists here but I don't think we can sign more than 1 'big' FA, and 2 in the rosiest scenario. I like the fact that we'd sign a FA in 'Hous' and trade for a pick with Marshall, but I'm far from convinced that we want to part with Marshall. And, admittedly, I'm not all that certain on the cap since we're appear to have few obligations next year with the a bunch coming due in 2010. So we might have an incentive to add salary next year. There's also the upcoming expiration (forgot date) of the CBA, which also may have an effect on our plans.

I'm all for offering to all of those FAs but it might make sense to scale back and focus on one, or two at the most.

I'll go with the trade scenario, but I have problems with your picks in the 1st. Curry is probably the best LB right now so I won't argue against him. The problem is positional. I'd like to see DJ reconsider moving, but a move back to SAM might be better. DJ's problem with MIKE seem less related to athletic ability than with disposition. Curry's a good pick but we might be merely restarting the game of musical chairs at OLB that always seems to leave us without a MIKE. It's a tough call, especially since a BPA strategy could put Curry on top of our Big Board when we choose in the 1st.

I love Cody's chances eventually but he's a risky pick right now, and I'd prefer not gambling with our 1st. He's also over-hyped, too. I'll cite Scott Wright's analysis, since he's a very good judge on this subject. Wright describes Cody as a "raw, one-dimensional run-stuffer," and goes on to talk about the amount of mail he's received on Cody. Cody has great potential, for sure, but there are other, less risky, options. Having two #1 picks could allow us to go another route, too. I'd be more favorably inclined towards a Raji for the #1b. And that's partly because I have my doubts about the prospect of signing Haynesworth. I might even be inclined towards packaging it to yield another 2nd & 3rd. The 'fat' range in this draft seems to be mid-1st through the 2nd into the 3rd. I'd love to see us pick up more semi-high picks and fill a number of positions. There's still enough need on this team, we could easily add that many players. And the cost-benefit ratio looks better in the 2nd & 3rd rounds, because of the salary structure for draftees.

The rest of your list is superb. I'm not convinced on Ian Johnson but he's only a #7. You've managed to hit all the areas, it would be great if we could only do that in the real draft.

If we were to trade Brandon Marshall it would be for way more than just a 1st. The cowboys traded what? a 1st, 3rd and 4th or something for Roy Freakin' Williams?

The guys good, but not nearly as good as Marshall is. On top of that Marshall still has a lot more potential to get better.

I'm sorry but in order for us to trade Marshall I'd want 2 1st rounders.

Special Teams is why we would want Johnson primarily. I've watched this guy's whole college career and I'm honestly going to say that I'm not so sure he'd be a stellar starting half back... I mean he's got the potential, but with last season and even this season he's kind of slowed down a bit. But this season we have a tandem that includes Ian and two other guys that are also excellent backs.

But Ian will be a great addition to whatever team picks him up in that he will help their return game big time. Denver needs a great returner... and I think Ian could be that guy.

Having one more RB is fine if there's room and they actually contribute to special teams. I didn't know much about Ian Johnson but I assumed he wouldn't be able to contribute because of his speed (which may be better than I thought). Coincidently, I was thinking of Marcus Thigpen (RB, Indiana), who's a real good kick returner and projects as a #5th - 6th rounder.

I really don't know if there's room though, and we've yet to see Alridge perform on KR. Although.....Hall is probably on the way out, so it's a thought. I need to find a #7th pick if I'm going to criticize though. It would be nice if a late pick helped our defense, besides STs. Late picks should have ST potential or contribute in another way, preferably both.

in any case i like some of the picks and i dont critize people unless they are way off base because its always fun reading different opinions. I will say i dont see 2 1st rd picks in the cards and i dont see marshall being traded, plus most teams dont have what it would cost. no to mention only getting a 1st for marshall when a team like dallas traded multipl picks for roy williams screws us more than beefits us.....in any case i could see the logic ina backwards kind of way

anyway fun stuff, and some solid picks
