  • KWHIT'S 2009 mock-offseason!

I am bored so I've done some research and decided to do a mock off-season based on what I think the Broncos should do next off-season, enjoy!

    Our 2009 Free Agents
    QB Patrick Ramsey
    RB Tatum Bell
    RB Michael Pittman
    WR Darrell Jackson
    WR Edell Sheppard
    C Tom Nalen
    OT Erik Pears
    DE Ebeneezer Ekuban
    DT Kenny Peterson
    LB Nate Webster
    CB Karl Paymah
    S Calvin Lowry
    S Marlon McCree

    We re-sign these guys:
WR Darrell Jackson (should come cheap and provides nice depth at wideout)
C Tom Nalen (if he's healthy, let's give him 1 more year)
OT Erik Pears (can never have too much O-Line depth, he knows the system)
DT Kenny Peterson (Has done well in limited role, nice DT depth)

The rest we let walk, don't need them, don't want them!!!

    Cuts:
RB Andre Hall (has had the oppurtunities, hasn't performed)
DE John Engelberger (I'm tired of seeing him start, tired of him period)
CB Dre' Bly (big contract, shows flashes but on the wrong side of 30)
S Marquand Manuel (just flat out sucks)

    Contract extensions:
WR Brandon Marshall (we better lock him up soon)
DE Elvis Dumervil (not an every down end, but the only real pass-rush threat we have)

Free Agent Signings: (we have plenty of room against the cap)
CB Dunta Robinson (should come fairly cheap, if he is healthy he is a shut-down corner for half the price of Asomugha)
S Jermaine Phillips (a good in-the-box safety, should be affordable)
DE Chris Canty (will fit nicely at LDE, has size and some nice pass-rushing skills, in wrong scheme in Dallas)
OT George Foster (I know he is soft, but he knows the system and will be a decent back-up at both Tackle spots, cheap)
RB Derrick Ward (we will probably spend the most money on him, he will be 29 years old, but a great RB just looking for an oppurtunity, will be a star in our system for 3-4 years)
QB J.T. O'Sullivan (after we let Ramsey walk, we will need a good veteran back-up, J.T. will fill this role nicely)

Mostly mid-level guys, but some great additions. Robinson, Phillips, Canty, and Ward will likely push for starting jobs!

2009 draft (the way I see it we will be picking around the 20 range)
    1. MLB Brandon Spikes (Florida)
This kid has it all and reminds me too much of Al Wilson, he can hit, stuff the run, and has some coverage capabilities, exactly what we need at MIKE!

    2. S Derek Pegues (Miss. St)
We have already added our in-the-box guy in Phillips, now we need a Safety with great coverage skills and range, enter Pegues, he might be the best deep cover safety in the draft!

    3. DT Dorrell Scott (Clemson)
After missig out on the Haynesworth sweepstakes we need another DT that can clog the middle, Scott is that guy. Great size, strong, and quick he may take a little time but can become the next John Henderson in our 4-3 defense!

    4. RB Rashad Jennings (Liberty)
Basically BPA at this point. Jennings has all the talent of a day 1 back, but will likely go in the 3rd or 4th round. With Ward we can develop this guy to be our feature back in a year or 2!

    5. DE Mitch King (Iowa)
A little unlikely he falls this far but if he does he is a must pick. Reminds me a little of Aaron Kampman, can get to the QB but can also hold up against the run. At the very least will make a nice rotation type guy at LDE!

    6. WR-TE Jaison Williams (Oregon)
Great size, good speed, and solid hands will make this guy a steal in the 6th. In case Scheffler doesn't work out we have a guy in the waiting!

    6. G Tyronne Green (Auburn)
Good size, nice athleticsm. Will be a project but could eventually be a starter at RG!

    7. DT Antonio Dixon (Miami)
A huge DT that can stuff the run, will be a project but may conribute in rookie year.

After Free Agency and the draft every need should be covered. Spikes will be a stud in the middle and with DJ shoul form a great duo for the next 6 or 7 years. Pegues will improve our pass defense immensly, Scott and Dixon will beef up our interior D-Line, Jennings has franchise-back written all over him, and King could be our future starter at LDE!

Any responses are more than welcome, harsh or not!

I like your draft and a bunch of your offseason moves, but I think we could at least get a 5th for bly, cutting him would probably lead to more dead money on our books and we can bundle some 5ths and trade up into the third or fourth.

also dunta wont come cheap like everyone thinks

decent job IMO, too many FA's though.

      I like it however:

-I think Tom Nailen is done sadly
      - I think we need to either restructure Bly's contract somehow or trade him. I don't like the idea of just cutting him. He's still a good player and takes a bit more flak than he deserves.
      - I think we should resign Ekuban.
      - I don't think Foster would make this team, and wouldn't sign him. Pears and Polumbus I think we feel high on. If we were to get rid of one of those two, I'd imagine we'd draft a developmental tackle instead of one that we know wont ever be anything good for us.

I also like Rashad Johnson in the 2nd over Pegues if he's there.

Other than that I like it.

      Don't we have 2 5th rounders?

Dorell Scott is a solid pick, however I agree with Botan that we should resign Ekuban. Everyone keeps saying Dumervil is our only pass rusher...not true! Ekuban leads the team for sacks this year and is 3rd on the Dline for tackles. He is by far our best all round Dlineman. Sure we need to upgrade but why get rid of one our best players on the line, at worst he is a very solid backup. Nalen is also gone, again i agree with Botan. Weigmann will be the starter again next year with Lictnsteiger as potential replacement long term. Jaison Williams is someone I have been keeping my eye too however he does tend to drop passes but he would be a good pick up in the late rounds.

Also, I'm sorry to disagree with everyone but there is no way any team is gonna give anything more than a 7th rounder for Dre' Bly, and any team wanting him will just wait for him to be cut to re-do his contract. He has already re-structured once and is having a solid year, I doubt he goes for it again.

you are not getting no arguement from me

I think you should have gotten shipley and one more safety and i would have been happy.

always injured my ass. If you don't know then at least research first.

                  http://www.nfl.com/players/duntarobi...e?id=ROB407958 (to prove my point)

Dunta Robinson started every game his career until last year. He had 2 freak major injuries last year on the same play ACL/Hamstring. other than that he is a beast of a corner. He is already back playing and starting for Houston. Houston D had its best effort last weekend in Cleveland with Dunta starting. He would be a great addition to this team opposite Champ or at Nickel.

Face it, Dunta Robinson's career is practically over. The speed he once had won't be back after those two back-to-back injuries he suffered

Great Mock Offseason , KWITT, especially the Dunta Robinson idea, judging by the responses here he would be an excellent addition.......

I'd like to see us draft a WR to replace Stokely here soon. Maybe Shipley or Cosby from Texas if we can grab one in the 2nd/3rd

Not a great draft!!!! LB isn't our BIGGEST need.

Defensive Line is our 1st Priority. We can't stop the run or SACK the QB.

1st Round Pick should be BJ RAJI or Terrance Cody. Stop the run and then you only have to deal with the pass.

                              __________________________________________________ _____________

Safety is our 2nd Priority. Manuel/McCree just aren't cutting it. If Raji/Cody aren't available we have to go Mays/Moore in the 1st Round.

                              __________________________________________________ _____________

Running Back is our 3rd Priority. We have had more injuries to RB this year then I can ever remember. I think Shonn Greene Iowa would be great.

                              So here it is

1st Round -------- BJ Raji DT Boston College.

2nd Round ------- Derek Pegues S Missi St. Good pick from you.

3rd Round-------- Shonn Greene RB Iowa
