  • Complete 3-4 2009 Off-Season.

    Overview:

Hi, this is my 2nd attempt at a 2009 off-season for the Denver Broncos. I have tried to make this close and not have too many reaches or hopeful signings/draft picks. 3-4 Mock here and I tried to use the players we already have to make up most of the team, though I do have cuts and FA signings. I have ideas for trades but I did not put them into the mock, I’d just suggested trades to see what you guys think and I only offered trade ideas for players that did not fit on my team.

It’s pretty clear this is not a perfect off-season mock, cause in a perfect world rex would not be my 1st choice at Qb and we’d have better safeties or I’d know which NT we’d get, but this is in my opinion of something close to what could happen and the players drafted and signed are the ones I like and have my eye on. No im not a USC fan either.

I want us to grab Gabe Watson very much, but I’m not 100% sure how the RFA works and what we would have to give up. So for the sake of this mock I want all our draft picks, if there is a way of getting him with out giving up a pick this season please let me know so I can add him as our NT.I think he will give us a great push and power; this is what I want for our NT it’s a very important spot in a 3-4. With Gabe being out of the question I took a guy like Grady Jackson as my 2nd choice, his legs should be fine for one more season seeing how he didn’t play much when he was younger. His good weight and size help out this choice as well. This guy has been there and should battle well for the starting roll closely with Powell and maybe even lee hill. Remember I want Watson over Jackson any day and I hope we go out and get him.

I feel we still have a weakness at DE, SS/FS and CB. We have DT’s trying the shift to DE so you never know how well it is going to work. SS/FS and CB lack depth mainly and I feel the nickel Corner is weak but there is no way for a 100% turn around in one year. These positions will have to do until the ’10 off-season unless one of the trades I brought up is made. I would like to make a Trade to gather a Pick to draft a SS or to acquire a SS to start over Barrett. I do not feel he is ready this season.

Total: 52 players on depth Chart – if I can count

    - Consider any left out player cut or re-assigned to PS.
    - Mainly a 3-4 Off-season but some 4-3 will be used but not as the base.
    - Room for change depending on camp battles and how well players transition to a new position
    - Not sure what the number of active players allowed is – can change up to 3 players to make room.
    - PS stands for practice squad
    - * denotes rookie
    - SLR stands for slot receiver
    - I’ll use a 2 back system

    FA Signings:

    Defense:

    S Sean Jones
    ILB Jonathan Vilma
    NT Grady Jackson

    Offence:

    QB Rex Grossman

    Possible trade options:
    Dumervil – 4th? Or 2010 3rd?
    (B) Bailey – 4th? Or 2010 4th?

    Draft:
1st: ILB Rey Maualuga - USC
2nd: DE Fili Moala - USC
3rd: OLB Clay Matthews - USC
4th: OG Andy Kemp - Wisconsin
    5th (A): DT/NT Sammie Lee Hill - Stillman
5th (B): ILB Jasper Brinkley – South Carolina
6th: QB Graham Harrell - Texas Tech
    7th (A): RB Marlon Lucky - Nebraska
    7th (B): DE/LB Kyle Moore - USC

    UDFA:

    Offence:

QB Todd Boeckman - Ohio State – (PS)
    WR Jordan Norwood - PSU
    OG Ramon Foster - Tennessee
C David Washington - Oklahoma State

    Defense:

NT Antonio Dixon – Miami – (PS)
DT/DE Nader Abdallah, Ohio State – (PS)
DE/LB Darius Davis - Wayne State – (PS)
    SS Reshard Langford - Vanderbilt
FS Nate Ness, - Arizona – (PS)
    K Swayze Waters – UAB – (PS)

    Draft plan:
What I want to do here is improve our Line backing core and get the start of a powerful D line that will stuff the run and bring the fire back.

Round 1: Our weakness is D clearly and in the 1st round there are only a few choices at 12. Yes players can fall but I can’t see anyone we need falling into our lap. Our choice is; reach for a player not worth the 12th spot or trade down. I’d much rather just sit on 12, and just take rey. He will bring the fire back and restore the force in the middle… well I sure hope he will.

Round 2: Leads me on the same path as round one but this time on the line. Lacking a big 3-4 DE On our line and Moala can play both DE and NT. He seems like the right fit and a good value, if for some reason our NT does not work out he might fit the bill with a little weight gain.

    Round 3
: More D and yes again it’s a player from USC. Clay is a perfect Sam Backer that can cover, rush the pass and tackle well. He seems like a great fit to me.

Round 4: I’d like to see us add a big body to our already good O line, Andy Kemp seems to fit nice. This is a spot we could also trade to get a player like Gabe Watson, which I would not mind doing.

Round 5: Two picks here and 1st off I want to take a kid I like, Sammie Lee Hill is a huge NT and can he ever play. Another small school kid who I think will be a great steal here. 2nd pick I thought why not add depth to our backers, we really don’t have good back ups or special teamers so adding Jasper Brinkley seems to be a no brainier here.

Round 6: With patty rams gone we are going to need a QB and we all know how great rex is.
Graham will come in and be a nice 3rd stringer for us, with any luck cutler can teach him a few things and maybe even learn a thing or too him self.

Round 7: Again 2 picks, lucky will add fresh legs to our back field and trust me this kid can run. Kyle Moore from USC will join his buds and add us some 3-4 depth.

UDFA: I picked some players I liked and I picked some players that seem to fit, most are PS players any who so it’s not a huge deal. Let’s hope I found a gem here…!

Any thoughts or comments would be much appreciated and just a heads up im not a master mock kinda guy or someone who puts in a super amount of time in this stuff. Been a broncos fan for 11 years now but this is the 1st time I have taken this strong of an interest in the off season. I feel I tried so if there is anything I messed up on or didn’t add please let me know so I can fix it and update it. Also I know I can’t spell and may have bad grammar

    Thanks,

    Lukas J McLean.

I like it. I too am a big fan of USCs defense. One problem I see is that I would put DJ and Rey at the ILB positions then we wouldn't have to get Vilma or Brinkley.

That is a very good idea and i thought of doing it but Dj is better at WLB and i love the way vilma plays ball. Woodyard could be fine as WLB if Dj was to play ILB.

Maualuga in the first is a sound pick, he may be there...Maola is a great pick in the second, but he would be used strictly as a Defensive End, just so you know. Matthews will be a second round pick IMHO, but he is the steal of the linebacker class or so I believe. Kemp is not bad, just I think Dallas Reynolds or CJ Davis are likely later, Davis would be a Hamilton like addition play guard and Center, Dallas Reynolds will be a terrific center in the NFL.

As for Brinkley he could be a good addition, though I am not sold on him and I feel he may fall. I do not see Denver taking a backup quartback in the draft when there are loads available in free agency, that is my opinion of course, Marion Lucky is not a bad pick, he could be a viable addition in the spread offense...but Moore will rise come the combine and be long gone, he has great upside and is a bit raw, he will be drafted sooner then the 7th. Overall not bad, I will not speculate of free agency, but overall not a bad draft at all Lukas!

            Thoughts:

            1. The Saints are resigning Vilma. They just can't due to the trade language until after Free Agency starts, otherwise they give up a 2nd Rounder. Both sides want him in New Orleans.

            2. Vilma hates the 3-4. He also sucked at the 3-4 for the Jets. He'll never play in a 3-4 for the rest of his life if he can control and this year, he can.

            3. Its going to be tough to get Sean Jones, he's a Franchise candidate.

            4. I Don't see Moala going until the 3rd round, where we might very well take him ourselves. I believe Mathews goes in the 2nd as a 3-4 ILB, specifically to the Dolphins. I think you need to swap the rounds that Moore and Hill are drafted in.

            5. You have Lichtensteiger switching to OC, and us picking up an OG for depth. I don't believe Lichtensteiger is an NFL calibur OC at all. I think we can try keeping him as a backup OG, and draft a decent OC, such as Antoine Caldwell in the 3rd-4th round area.

            6. Both Brinkley and Harrell should go a solid round or two before where you have them going.

            7. Jarvis Moss is not a 3-4 DE, not even close. He's a pure 3-4 OLB rover.

            8. DJ Williams is not a 3-4 OLB, he'll be moving inside. You also seem to have forgotten about Larson's starting potential inside. I see absolutely zero need for an ILB other then depth. But that is more of a personal opinion, so yours that we need an ILB starter is just as valid, though I think flawed. I think the days of seeing Larson dabble at FB are over.

Overall, definitely a good effort. You can tell you put some serious time into it. I think there are a few flaws, but its pretty impressive overall.

That was my point in mt draft we dont need an ILB, it would be more of a Value pick if anything...Or depth like you said...I think a Full training camp and Larson will prove he's pretty good...All though I would like to throw this at you...

              Sign ASO, and Crowder...

ASO at one corner Bly at the other Move Champ to a Troy Palumala Role and Barrett and or a Drafted other saftey with Crwder and DJ inthe middle...Soild...Ed Reed is the same size as Champ as is alot of other safties
