FREE AGENCY:
1) CB Ron Bartell
*Big, athletic corner we can count on as a #2 CB across from Champ.
2) DE Chris Canty
*Solid 3-4 end to anchor our new and improved defensive line.
3) FS Sean Jones
*Fast, playmaking safety to solidify our secondary.
4) SS Gibril Wilson
*Great player who can immediately upgrade our safety corps and play mentor to the younger guys. Possibly creates one of the best safety tandems in the league as well.
5) DE Mike Wright
*Another end with experience in the 3-4 who will be a valuable asset opposite Canty.
6) SS Sean Considine
*[I]Special teams ace as well as solid depthI]
7) QB Kyle Boller
*Quality backup for Cutler.
RESIGNED PLAYERS:
1) OT Erik Pears
*Nice, young backup to Clady at LT.
2) DE Kenny Peterson
*Great backup to all our defensive line spots. Can rotate in and produce for us.
3) WR Chad Jackson
*I think he showed enough to get a new contract. Has great speed and quickness. Can get some playing time at WR while acting as our primary return man.
TRADE(S):
1) 4th Round Pick to Arizona for DT Gabe Watson
*Gives us a massive, young player to man the NT spot. Better than any DT we could get in the 4th.
2009 NFL DRAFT:
Rd. 1 - Pick #12) LB Brian Cushing (USC); 6'3", 246 lbs.
*Absolute beast of a player who's size, strength, and versatility make him a great pick here. His ability to play numerous LB spots in a 3-4 or 4-3 make him a perfect fit for our defense. He's a hard worker in the weight room and highly athletic for his size with good speed. We put him at ILB with Williams.
Rd. 2 - Pick #48) LB Clay Matthews (USC); 6'3", 240 lbs. / LB Connor Barwin (Cincinnatti); 6'3", 256 lbs.
*Two highly talented players who would be great as pass rushing OLB's. Both ran 4.6 40's (4.67 + 4.66 respectively) and show great work ethic as well as outstanding athleticism. Either of them would be great value here, hopefully one of them lasts this long.
Rd. 3 - Pick #79) CB Domonique Johnson (Jackson St.); 6'2", 200 lbs.
*Big, extremely fast corner from a small school who has a knack for finding the ball (very similar to DRC). Can be mentored by Champ as he prepares to eventually replace him while acting as our nickelback.
Rd. 5 - Pick #132) RB Ian Johnson (Boise State); 5'11", 212 lbs. / FB Tony Fiammetta (Syracuse); 6'0, 245 lbs.
*An explosive RB to compete for the starting job and/or pair with a power back OR a hard-nosed FB to lead block for Hillis while also being a threat in the passing game. Sounds like a win-win to me.
Rd. 5 - Pick #141) DE Kyle Moore (USC); 6'5", 272 lbs.
*Massive, athletic end who can provide depth on the D-line and rotate in. Project player who could eventually take over a starting spot.
Rd. 6 - Pick #172) OG Kraig Urbik (Wisconsin); 6'5", 328 lbs.
*Promising, talented lineman to groom as Hamilton's eventual successor.
Rd. 6 - Pick #183) LB Stryker Sulak (Missouri); 6'4", 251 lbs. / LB David Veikune (Hawaii); 6'2", 257 lbs.
*Two college DE's with a knack for getting to the QB. Sulak is faster (4.77 40) while Veikune is stronger (35 reps of 225). Either way we get a steal here as they can immediately come in and compete for an OLB spot or at the very least be great depth and help on ST's.
Rd. 7 - Pick #208) WR Patrick Turner (USC); 6'5", 223 lbs.
*Big target with great hands who runs crisp, clean routes. His failure to provide a 40 time at the combine drops him to us. Even if he does run at his Pro Day it likely won't help his stock unless he proves to have previously unseen, blazing speed.
UDFA:
1) SS Colt Anderson (Montana); 5'11", 200 lbs.
*Not even listed on most draft sites nor invited to the combine this guy has something to prove. A rare combination of a hard-hitter and ballhawk, the guy is a steal. A true playmaker during his tenure with the Griz he'll be a valuable asset for us on special teams and provide quality depth at both safety spots.
2009 STARTING LINEUP:
QB: Cutler
FB: Hillis OR Fiammetta
RB: Johnson, Young, Torain, etc. (RBBC) OR Hillis
WR: Marshall, Royal, Stokley
TE: Graham/Scheffler
OT: Clady, Harris
OG: Hamilton, Kuper
C: Wiegmann
DE: Canty, Wright
NT: Watson
ROLB: Matthews OR Barwin
RILB: Williams
LILB: Cushing
LOLB: Dumervil/Moss OR Sulak OR Veikune
CB: Bailey, Bartell, Johnson
FS: Jones
SS: Wilson
K: Prater
P: Kern
KR/PR: Jackson
NOTES:
-Notice how all acquired FA's are young, talented guys.
-Try out Dumervil + Moss at OLB. Have either Sulak or Veikune compete with them and push them. Matthews or Barwin could start at either spot (they'd be the fastest so naturally I put them on the weakside).
-Two ways we can go w/ our backfield to please those on either side of the Hillis debate. Well hopefully please them.
-Watson is not my 1st choice for NT (I'd prefer to draft a guy like Brace), but he was the best option to use the 4th Round pick on IMO (unless a high-profile DT fell in the draft).
-I realize there are a lot of Trojan players in my draft, but I figure they had the best defense in the country while we were one of the worst in the league. You can obviously see the connection.
-Please remember that nobody's perfect and I tried my best to fill every need. I welcome all constructive criticism and advice. Please let me know if any of it is incorrect or inplausible so that I may fix my error. I will update this tomorrow with pictures and any changes that need to be made. Thanks for your time.
