  • If Jaguars dance, Broncos pick No. 8

Broncos coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Brian Xanders can lock themselves into secrecy from now until draft day, and it might not matter.

There is a potential trade so logical, it all but leaps off the draft value chart.

Providing the Jacksonville Jaguars are willing partners, the Broncos could easily leap from their No. 12 overall draft pick to No. 8. (Credit the Walter Camp draftniks for first pointing this out).

The No. 8 spot would be significant to the Broncos if their preference is defensive tackle B.J. Raji, quarterback Mark Sanchez or Texas defensive end/outside linebacker Brian Orakpo.

As it stands now, someone would have to lace Raji's brownies between now and April 25 for the projected 3-4 nose tackle to fall past Green Bay with the No. 9 pick.

The San Francisco 49ers, having failed with Alex Smith as their franchise quarterback, cannot allow Sanchez to drop beyond their No. 10 pick.

And Orakpo, a physical freak who possesses the greatest pass- rushing potential, probably wouldn't get past Jacksonville at No. 8 or Buffalo at No. 11.

According to the last known draft value chart, the No. 8 draft pick is worth 1,400 points while the No. 12 pick is worth 1,200. To those who had a little too much Saturday night fun, that's a difference of 200 points.

That extra third-round pick the Broncos got from the Bears in the Jay Cutler trade? It allows the Broncos to sacrifice their first third- round pick, No. 79 overall. The No. 79 pick is worth 195 points on the draft value chart.

    Or close enough.

McDaniels and Xanders would never state their preference with their No. 12 pick. But it's no secret they may have to move up to get him.

    Youthful minds.

Forget his lineage to New England and Bill Belichick. By getting superstar-like compensation in return for Cutler (Kyle Orton and two first-round picks, besides the third-rounder), Mc- Daniels could eventually generate comparisons to another Boston sports boss — Theo Epstein.

If only McDaniels can break the Elway Curse.

Epstein was 28 when he was daringly hired by Red Sox president Larry Lucchino to become general manager of the storied major- league baseball franchise following the 2002 season. Epstein was 30 when he built a team so strong, it broke the Curse of the Bambino by winning the 2004 World Series.

And as Rockies fans may remember, the Epstein-built Red Sox won another Series in 2007.

The sports nation is becoming increasingly fascinated with the notion that young minds explore beyond conventional wisdom. It may or may not be a coincidence that Joe Ellis, the Broncos' chief operating officer and Pat Bowlen's right-hand man, got his first sports job as a Red Sox vendor.

With the Broncos winning just one playoff game in the 10 years since quarterback John Elway retired, ideas floating outside the normal noggin should at least be worth a try.

    No news, good news?

With the NFL draft less than two weeks away, the silence from the NFL office on Brandon Marshall is an encouraging sound to those locked behind closed doors at Dove Valley.

If Marshall were to receive a stiff sentence for violating the league's personal conduct policy, commissioner Roger Goodell, in the name of competitive fairness, likely would have issued his finding before the draft, as he did by levying a three-game suspension on Buffalo running back Marshawn Lynch.

To wit: The commissioner understands that if he was going to suspend Marshall for, say, eight games, the Broncos would have to draft a receiver within the first two rounds.

Marshall, who served a one-game suspension last year, was arrested March 1 in Atlanta following an argument with his fiancee. Charges were dismissed the next morning.

That the charges evaporated almost immediately, coupled with ample evidence that Marshall has genuinely tried to become a better person in the past year (see his volunteer time with at-risk children), may cause Goodell to decide against a harsh ruling that would potentially ruin a promising career.

Marshall can still expect some punishment. But there is reason for the Broncos to hope his suspension will be closer to zero games than eight.

    Good read BroncoABQ.....Thanks ! :salute!:

I would not be surprised at all to see the Broncos make some moves on draft day even if it is not exactly as described in the article....

I would not mind at all if they traded some later round value picks to move up in the draft as long as they dont go overboard......

Usually with great value left on the boards I would say no way ... but I would like to see the Broncos be able to make a play at both the Defense prospects listed in the thread ... No way to Sanchez though ...

      Good post.

I still think that San Francisco is going to pass on Sanchez. Singletary thinks he can win with Shaun Hill, and they still have a bad taste in their mouth from their last first round QB experience. San Francisco will probably target Crabtree or Maclin.

I believe if we stay at 12 we have a good chance of getting Sanchez. Raji may also be available. That would be the toughest call of the draft-begin a new era on the offensive side, or draft the anchor of a 3-4 defense for years to come.

I think Sanchez would be the better pick, and the more logical pick for McDaniels who could buy him self a few extra years to develop him. We could ideally then get Maualuga at 18, and possibly get Brace in the second round. If not , we could always make due with Ronnie Fields, and use one of our 1st rounders next year to get a NT. Boo Robinson or Terrence "Mount" Cody would be available.

Only problem with this theory is no way do The Broncos take Sanchez and there is certainly no way that Orakpo will be there at 8.

what I'd like to see is us package the two first rounders we got from the bears in a trade to the jags leaving us with picks 8 and 12 and get raji 8 maleuga 12.

I wouldn't mind seeing us move up in the draft to get a good defensive player, but if we want to get Orakpo we will likely have to move higher up tp get him. just My opinion though.

ummm... unless we got another first rounder next year from the jags that would be the dumbest trade in the history of the nfl... give up two first rounders to move up 10 picks... brilliant

I seriously doubt DEN trades up and grabs a QB, and I really cannot envision Mcd putting all his eggs in one basket- by going for broke and trading up for one, specific defensive players. Quantity over quality, while still trying to get quality.... you know?

I see them actually trading back to accumulate more picks... try to grab another 2nd & 3rd maybe... then using some 3rds to grab another 2nd.

I mean, I think DEN will value as many 1st-2nd round picks as possible.

With so many holes on the defense, DEN needs to bring in a bunch of potential studs.... IF they gamble on one, and miss, they are in trouble.

SO, while theymay covet a certain player, I doubt they would sell out to grab him. Will Orakpo be that much better than Brown or Ayers? Will Raji be a lock and Hood or Brace wont?

SO, I would believe trading back a few spots a more realistic option then trading up.

If DEn can turn one of those Cutler picks into 2 or 3... Or, combo both 3rds for a 2nd, then I see it happening.

Imagine trading the CHI 1st rounder for two 2nd round picks, or trading down from 12 for 2 first rounders?

It will only cost a 3rd to move up to #8, and we have another 3rd anyway. It'd be worth it, especially for Raji. He is not making it to #12.

I disagree, only b/c I think we need that extra pick.... We need players. NOW, if we combined that move with another- say, trade back from our second first rounder, grab two second round picks..... Well, that's a diferent story.

                    8th pick
                    3 second round selections
                    1 third

                    Sounds good to me.

A 3rd rounder is not a steep price to pay for the future anchor of our defense. Raji is far and away the top DT/NT in the draft, and we'd still have plenty of picks to address other needs, including another 1st rounder (which we shouldn't trade down from, we can get a good player at that spot, like Maualuga).

I think the proposed trade in the article is unrealistic. The Jaguars are one of the teams thought to be possibly targeting Sanchez. The article itself states that they are interested in Orakpo. They have to be considered a threat to take Raji. Their defense took hit by letting go of Marcus Stroud. It's unlikely that the Jaguars are going to be open to moving down, if they are targeting any of those three players.

As for the general idea of the Broncos moving up in the draft, I wouldn't mind seeing it happen, but I think it very unlikely to happen.

I'd be happy if we traded up for a defensive player, but very angry if we got Sanchez. I don't think Orakpo will be there at 8, but you never know. But swaping 12 and a third for 8 to snag Raji would be good for me.

                            Speculation on pick trade

They aren't drooling over an extra 3rd even if there's nobody they want at #8 there.
Just like us I guarantee you that there is much more emphasis on the top 2 rounds then others. I'd imagine they're trying to broker a deal where they get our 2nd rounder then give us some later ones to balance out, and we're probably trying to say we'll give you a 3rd and a 5th for the trade up.
