  • Clay Matthews the 18th pick in the Draft???

I would love to see him do this to Philip Rivers!!!!!

Milehighreport says that Clay Matthews was schedule to visit Denver on April 9, and that he was also interviewed during the combine by Denver.
Stay up to date with all the San Francisco 49ers football news, free agency, NFL draft, and more at 247Sports.com

Clay Matthews is Mike Mayock's #2 OLB

Pat Kirwan of NFL.com has New England selecting Clay Matthews at 23.

If Denver went with Matthews our LB's could look like this.

    Elvis Dumervil----Andra Davis-----DJ Williams----Clay Matthews

    The draft could go

    1st-------BJ Raji
    1st-------Clay Matthews
    2nd-------Sean Smith
    3rd--------Jasper Brinkley
    3rd--------Louis Murphy
    4th--------Dorell Scott
    5th--------Antonio Appleby

Adding Jasper Brinkley in the 3rd along with Clay Matthews would give Denver 2 Excellent LB's for the future!!!!

Clay Matthews is not a sack artist, he will have to improve his pass rush in the NFL. But he has huge upside, he is extremely fast and agile. He might become a great coverage guy. He won't look lost in coverage like most DEs that become OLBs. His versatility is appealing, he can play OLB in any scheme. Unfortunately he was a late bloomer at USC but his future looks bright.

Isn't he a bit undersized to play OLB in a 3-4? It seems to me that he would translate better to ILB in a 3-4.

Good player with lots of potential. I wouldn't mind seeing him in orange and blue.

Clay Matthews was 2nd on USC in Sacks with 4. The problem at USC there are sooo many good players that almost all of them are fighting for tackles and Sacks.

            At 6'3" 240lbs

            New Englands LB's

            Jerod Mayo ILB = 6'1" 242lbs
            Junior Seau = 6'3" 250lbs
Adalius Thomas = 6'2" 270lbs He is HUGE
            Tedy Bruschi = 6'1" 247lbs
            Rosevelt Colvin = 6'3" 250lbs
            Gary Guyton = 6'3" 242lbs

So the answer is No. He isn't too small

Maybe he can add some weight without compromising his movement. DeMarcus Ware weighed 250 when he joined the Cowboys. Now he weighs 260. James Harrison weighs 240. What matters is if the guy can get the job done. The same goes for a NT. People think that a player must weigh 320+ pounds to play NT... Jay Ratliff weighs 300 and plays NT for the Cowboys.

He is as tall as all of New Englands LB's and within 8lbs of them all except A. Thomas who is a 270lbs Freak!!!

                    James Harrison - 6'0" 240lbs
                    DeMarcus Ware - 6'4" 262lbs
                    LaMarr Woodley - 6'2" 266lbs
                    Joey Porter - 6'3" 250lbs
                    Terrell Suggs - 6'3" 260lbs
                    Shawne Merriman - 6'4" 272lbs

I'm also glad you brought up NE...

                    Adalius Thomas = 6'2" 270lbs
Mike Vrable - The other OLB starter last year - 6'4" 264lbs

With the exception of Harrison Matthews is smaller than all of the "best" 3-4 OLBs.
He also plays under 240 during the season, it's the Jarvis Moss syndrom.

A.K.A. too small to draft as a 3-4 OLB in the first round, IMO.

Harrison plays very big for 240. Most of the impact OLBs in this league are bigger. Ware, Merriman, Suggs, etc....

In fact if you review the depth charts on NFL.com or ESPN.com I thin you will find that Matthews is on the smaller side for a 3-4 OLB.

I have concerns that Matthews does not seem to rush the passer well. This is one of our big weaknesses. He may be able to develop but it doesn't seem to be one of his strengths right now.

I would not be disappointed to see Matthews get the call at 18 but I think I would prefer one of the bigger prospects.

Doom is 260 not 240. There is a difference. Doom is small for a 4-3 DE and he is the shortest DE in the league. He would not be a light OLB though. He would still be short but not light. For the record, I am not sure Doom will work as a 3-4 OLB and I have said this many times. I hope he can develop, actually I hope that Moss or Doom develop into a production OLB but I am not confident in either. We should draft accordingly.

yeah but it doesnt matter about size, as long as hes productive.
