  • First round QBs--Booms or Busts?

I found some interesting facts about the failure rate of first-round QBs in the NFL in the last 20 years. Their average passing rating is 72.7, and only 34.8% have passing ratings better than league average!

Sure, you get your occasional Manning or two, but in the last few years we've also gotten these guys:

    Alex Smith (1st pick overall)
    Tim Couch (1st)
    David Carr (1st)
    Michael Vick (1st)
    Tim Couch (1st)
    Ryan Leaf (2nd)
    Joey Harrington (3rd)
    Vince Young (3rd)
    Heath Shuler (3rd)
    Byron Leftwich (7th)
    Matt Leinart (10th)
    Kyle Boller (19th)
    Rex Grossman (22nd)
    J.P. Losman (22nd)
    and the list goes on....

Besides being first rounders, what do they have in common? None of them even start.

On the other hand, we have:
    Tom Brady (6th round)
    Marc Bulger (6th round)
    Matt Cassel (7th round)
    Matt Hasselbeck (7th round)
    Kurt Warner (undrafted)
    Tony Romo (undrafted)
and for you history buffs, Joe Montana (3rd round, 82nd pick)

Just something to keep in mind Saturday.
    Respect...it's earned, not given.

Thank you so much Ive been wanting to show this list every time I hear we have to draft Sanchez the only way we can get a franchise QB is at 1st.

Heck of our current QB one of the excuses seemed to be that they drafted Grossman so high they didnt want to dismiss him. For a mid rounder.

Just because some 1st round QBs bust, doesn't mean that it's better to take a QB in the 3rd-6th round!

It just means it's tough to find a really good starting QB!

What you didn't do is make a list of all the 3rd or later round QBs who were busts. Is the percentage of success HIGHER in the later rounds just because there was an occasional Tom Brady?

      NO!

It means that you have to draft wisely and hope for the best. It also means that teams that draft in the top 5 SUCK really bad! So, sometimes their QBs never develop they way they might have with a better team.

And sometimes you just get unlucky and draft Ryan Leaf.

But, anybody who thinks a team is going to just go out and get a great QB in the 6th round because it's happened before is Highly delusional!

Someone is going to win the $50 million power-ball lotto too! But it isn't going to be you just because you bought a ticket!

That is true but just because they are rated high in the draft doesnt mean they are guaranteed to be the best QB in the draft. The same can be said for all players and if they are rated low it doesnt mean they wont be the best player in the NFL

and another common denominator is that I think they all came out in thier junior year. and why would they do that? because they would fall dramatically in the draft because next years QB class is much better.. just something I heard this morning.. but that's my opinion on the matter. food for thought!!

              Very skewed perception.

There are tons of QB's drafted in the later rounds and most of them never even taste the field.

Why do we have to Draft a QB in the 1st round?

Patriots and Josh McD have had success with later round quarterbacks (Tom Brady & Cassell) so why would we waste our picks on some idiot from USC when we just got 2 new QBs.

We should actually use the draft picks and rebuild that horrid defense of ours.

San Diego Chargers: NEVER BEEN WORLD CHAMPIONS. 1x AFC Champions. Overall Record: (.493)

Broncos - please do not draft a QB!.........

Our offense will be fine..........we need 2 top 20 stud defenders in this draft!

Any talk by espn, nfl network and others just makes me crazy!!

Get a QB in next years draft..........

Because everyone is convinced that we need one because without Whats-His-Face were crap apparently.

Im with you guys though. We dont need a qb. Theres a better class next year if we wanted to get one in the first round. And theres some good guys in the late rounds this year we could get.

The Broncos reportedly did not require a quarterback as part of the deal to trade Cutler. If they didn't think either Orton or Simms were capable of being the starter, I don't think they would have taken Orton as part of the deal.

I think they will draft a quarterback but I doubt they will take one in the first round.
