  • New Mel Kiper "quote"

Ok for anyone that does not know I am working on a website to track Mel Kipers hits and misses on draft day. Im basically doing this because I think he is an idiot but I do promise to give him due credit for the ones he gets right. I know he is not compleatly useles as he did say Eddie Royal was a great player when denver drafted him last year.

However, The other night I was watching sportscenter with Mayock and Kiper arguing over weather or not the lions should take Stafford (QB) or Jason Smith (OLT) in this years draft. Without going in to great detail about the argument Mayock made a comparison of Smith to Clady (which is actually a pretty good comparison inmo). Mel retort? ...... wait for it........

"Ryan Clady was not an elite tackle last year"

I woke my wife from a sound sleep as I hurled vulger language at the television for what she said was a completly unhealthy amount of time.

Mel Kiper cant even get last years draft right this year!

Anyone with one eye and a functioning brain pattern knows that even with one of the best tackle drafts we have seen in years last year Ryan Clady was a huge steal at #12 overall. I mean 1 1/2 sack in over 600 dropbacks!

So I added this to the growing list of Mel Kipers Mindless Quotes* section of my website. I just had to share it with the boards here.

*All names of articals and sections of the upcoming Mel Kiper Website are subject to change at anytime and for any reason especially if I say so. lol.

This was argued about elsewhere, and I think the argument in his defense was that Clady wasn't considered the Elite tackle coming out of college. Not so much referring to his time as a Bronco.

Hard to believe it's only been a year, eh?

I met Mel once. He tried to tell me I wasn't really standing in the room with him. Go figure.

              QFT.

I did a double take when I heard to too, but then it made sense. He wasn't talking about his rookie nfl season, but his college season.
Very happy to have Tebow in orange and blue!!!

sorry if it was discussed elsewhere i couldnt find it.

"You compared Jason Smith to Ryan Clady who wasn't elite last year."

Exact quote. Had to go find the notepad I jotted it down on which was behind the tv after it bounced off a wall.

And I compleatly dissagree that Mel was talking about where Clady was drafted last year. McShay had made the comparison fully knowing that Clady is an elite tackle and Jason Smith was a similar tackle in size and skill. Mel then blurted out the above quote.

If the draft last year was done knowing what we know now Clady would have gone much higher then 12 and could have been the number one overall (not that Miami should be disapointed in who they got). Mel's comment was complete garbage.

Thanks for your interest. Not up yet. Hoping to have it up this summer. Early summer. Its actually quite a task as I just recently decided to do it, and of course its hard to evaluate how good or bad he does for a few years after a draft so it will be ongoing. Hoping to have some help as it gets a little further on and help is always welcome. Anytime any one has a good quote from him please send it along with a link if possible and I'll take into consideration adding it. It really should be pretty fun with boards and so on. pm me and Ill be sure to send you a note when it is up as Im going to do for anyone that wants to see it.

If Clady would have played in the Big 12 or anything like that he prob woulda been considered elite.

I know what your saying but I don't buy it. McShay compaired the skill set of the players. Im all for making sure that I don't take things out of context but it was not in the way that you think in my opinion. I never felt it was McShay comparing the two when they came out of college. He was compairing the two right now. There was never a "well Smith is like Clady last year" its was much more " Smith is like Clady, quick feet, big, strong, great hands....etc." There was no way Kiper could have thought McShay was talking about where they stood before thier respective drafts.

And even if it was ment that way it just shows that Kiper was wrong last year about Clady as well. Maybe he wasn't considered "elite" last year entering the draft but he sure as hell was "elite" with both sets of broncos that he has played with. I was so positive that he wouldn't be there last year when the Broncos picked I would have lost my shirt if I were a betting man.

it doesn't make much sense either way.....Clady was still considered top 10ish....and no one would've batted an eye if someone took him top 5.....if you don't consider a guy projected at that point in the draft elite....it's a pretty stupid comment
"Badger my a$$ it's probably Milhouse...."

Thank you. That is really the point I wanted to make. You just did it much better.(and shorter).

Well, I agree that we're arguing over degrees of stupidity...

However, I don't think you can say that there's NO way he meant 'coming out of college' when he said 'last year'.

One year ago, he was coming out of college.

Yes, he also played professionally last year.

                              Either way though... *shrug*
