  • Question for the football gurus....

Who is most likely to be franchised out of these players:

    Scheffler
    Marshall
    Kuper
    Hamilton
    Orton
    Doom

IMO it's probably Doom. If they can keep him upright for atleast half of his snaps then they only have to pay him as an OLB, and not as a DE.

    Who do you guys think?

I think we know we want to keep Elvis. Our biggest issue on defense is still the pass rush. What happens if Elvis gets hurt?

No way do we risk letting him walk. He'll get a new contract.

I could be wrong, but I think we don't pick Dumervil to franchise. On the other hand, I don't see who else to franchise either. Maybe either Hamilton or Kuper depending on how that settles out at the end of the year.

The other people on that list though, I would think the Broncos don't even want to mess with it and just will do contracts for them.

      I gotta agree with Alastor.

But, if I had to choose one off the list I'd say Doom. That would be to secure him for the year as we re-work a contract for him though.

IMO there are four guys on that list we really need to retain (Doom, Orton, Marshall, and Kuper).

I was just thinking do to gauranteed money there's a good chance one of them gets franchised instead of being offered a contract.

I would say Tony Scheffler if he keeps getting a bigger role in the offense. Why? Because the franchise tag on a TE would cost around $4.5 million. If you franchise a LB, WR or OL the cost will be at least $8.5 million. So, I guess we will prefer to negotiate long term deals with the other players and Scheffler might be tagged. TE has the lowest tag besides K and P.

That's a good point. I think the tag for an OLB is pretty low too. I don't know if it's $4.5 million low however.

I actually think Dumervil will get tagged. The reasoning is that as we've seen with elite players, specifically at OLB, the actual negotiation process takes a long, long time.

The team might want a deal, Dumervil might want a deal, but the contract talks seemingly always stretch out for months and months on top of the line contracts. So, going by history, I think it will be Dumervil because his contract will be the largest and toughest to negotiate.

I will say that DeMarcus Ware's extension helps quite a bit though. If Dumervil can get around 20 sacks this season, in that vicinity, he can essentially piggyback on that contract extension's parameters which will make things easier on both sides.

I imagine a deal with Orton will be announced before the season's end. We need to make sure he proves himself a little more, but I expect that to be priority one and already in the works.

We'll see what happens with Marshall. It does appear we'll work out a deal with him at some point, but it's not a lock.

Kuper and Scheffler are up in the air. Kuper might price himself out of our range, or at least what McD sees his value as. Same thing with Tony.

I can't imagine Ben Hamilton comes back. He's been terrible this year.

As usual you have a deeper understanding than I do about this stuff. I was thinking more in terms of cash flow.

I really hope we don't let Kuper walk. I think he should be a huge priority.

The CBA is the key to everything.

If no deal is done before February, then none of them are going anywhere.

I agree. With all the other FAs, Hamilton is down the list of priorities. I wouldn't be surprised to see an experienced FA brought in during the offseason or a high draft pick that is more of an aggressive mauler type that can hold his ground better unless they think Seth Olsen will be ready to start. I don't think that will be the case though since Weigmann may also need replacing if he retires. I don't think McD starts 2 young players at Center and LG. Eugene Amano is an option. he will be a FA from Tenn this offseason. He can also play center and would ba good FA pickup IMO. The Titans also have 14 FAs this coming season including Bo Scaife, Lendale White, and 5 of their starting front 7 on Defense, so they won't be able to keep them all which makes it possible they let him go into free agency.

I believe if we use a franchise tag it'll just be because we can't get a contract worked out with somebody, I don't think we'll just slap it on somebody and let it be.

Honestly, I can see Kuper leaving this offseason. It's possible he could ask for some premier guard type of money, especially if he makes the pro bowl, and New England never had a problem saying bye to its premier players. Josh obviously takes that same mentality with him, you all saw how easily he showed the door to Cutler.

However, if I had to pick somebody, I might say Champ.
