  • MUG: What will REALLY happen?

With your smarts (It hurts me thinking about how smart you are...) and numbers background, how do you seriously see this off-season playing out for the Broncos? I really don't think you can one-year tender guys like Doom, Marshall, etc. because all that will really happen is they'll be so aggitated that they'll leave the following year. I'm enjoying the mocks and off-season speculation, but I think we might all be way off target.

Denver is obviously going to have to pay these guys and I really think they'll at least attempt to keep them all, but who gets the money today, who gets it tomorrow and who do you irritate the most? Marshall and Doom have to make money NOW, Scheffler you could hold off on, Orton would be wise to stay in this system and maybe Kuper is the big unknown.

With the CBA being what it is what really happens?

Jus kidding man. You're right MUG is a super freaky genius. If I recall correctly MUG is a lawyer by trade. Successful people make me mad. Just playing.

While I don't always agree with MUG about the team needs, I really don't want us to draft Dez Bryant, I do have a treamendous amount of respect for his opinions. I always read a MUG thread especially when it comes to offseason issues.

A little over the top, but I appreciate the compliment. There are plenty of folks who would disagree with you though.

All I can give is my opinion and guess. Without a new CBA, this team holds all the cards. Would it agitate key players if we lowball tender them or Franchise/Transition Tag them? Sure. But in the end, they have little choice but to report and play out the contract. If they cause a distraction, they get suspended for Conduct Detrimental to the Team. So, they truly are limited in what they can do. If they hold out, they are going to get fined massive amounts of money and possibly fail to qualify for an accrued season, meaning they remain a year short of qualifying for Free Agency. How that aspect plays out when a new CBA is negotiated is beyond me. I'm sure the Players Union will require that all players with 4 years of accrued seasons instantly be granted Free Agent status. I'm sure the owners won't want it to be quite that simple and will request the team have some sort of right of first refusal.

As for us, I think we Franchise Tag Dumervil. Typically, the elite pass rushers are Tagged while a long term deal is worked out. Those deals tend to take a while to finetune.

I think we will keep Scheffler. I don't anticipate another team trading decent value for him. If we can get a 5th Rounder, we should trade him. I just don't think we will get any bites. I don't think we should cut him.

I think we will resign Orton easily enough. I think he'll want to be here. I think we want him here. We can probably agree on a decent two year deal and readdress the contract after that time when we will know if Orton is legit or not. I think Kyle will just be happy to make decent money for once, so he should go for it.

As for Chris Kuper, he's tricky. At first glance, you'd think he would be a decent fit for McD's preferred system. But, he played poorly as of late. True, he doesn't have much help around him, but he's definitely not a dynamic player on his own. However, with so many other positions of turnover facing the team, we could probably put RG off for another year. Surround Kuper with Ryan Harris and decent OC, and Kuper plays well enough to get us through. I'm not sure he's a long term option though, and if Shanahan takes the Washington job, that team needs serious help on the O-line. Kuper might be legit trading chip. I'm not sure anything more than a 4th Rounder is obtainable though, and probably only from Shanahan.

In regards to Marshall, I would probably trade him if at all possible. I like Dez Bryant and feel he can replace Marshall sooner rather than later. I also like the fact Dez isn't facing a 8 -16 game suspension if he makes a mistake. I like that Dez will make 25 million over 5 years, while Marshall will want 40-50 million. And I like that Bryant is a better deep threat than Marshall, whom is a pure possession and YAC guy. If the team feels it can afford Marshall, I would still draft Dez Bryant as insurance and to create a dynamic WR corps. Both of those guys at WR would be amazing.

        So, to summarize my guess:

        1. Franchise Dumervil and work towards a long term deal.

        2. Low tender Scheffler and keep him unless offered a 5th Round or better.

        3. High tender Kuper and keep him unless offered a 4th Round or better.

        4. Work out a short term contract with Orton with the understanding that if he "proves it" over a two year period, the contract will be readdressed. Maybe even after one year if he plays lights out.

        5. Trade Marshall, draft Dez Bryant. I would trade him if I could get two selections within the first 75 picks. I would Transition Tag him, find a trade partner, and ship him out. I think finding a trade partner will be somewhat difficult though. No team is going to want to pay him market value and risk the suspension situation. McD really seems to like Marshall though, so we'll see what happens. If we could draft Bryant and resign Marshall, that would be a lot of fun.

Hey MUG, while you are at it, can you get out your crystal ball and let me know what stocks to buy this year?

What's funny is that I've thought to myself many times that I should give up football as a hobby and focus on learning the stockmarket. My dad was heavily into the stockmarket, he made a lot of money in it, he also lost over a million dollars as well on a scam.

If I'm investing, I'm putting my money into either gold or real estate. If you can curve your emotions, purchasing foreclosed properties or discounted debt, are massively profitable as well.

MUG, completely agree with your thoughts on Dez Bryant. If we trade Marshall, or don't have him in our long term plans, we need to draft a number 1.

I'm on the Byant wagon as well, but I still think if there's any possible way to keep Marshall (not a crazy contract) we should still draft Dez. Putting Eddie into the slot w/ Gaffney at a number four would be great for KO and any qb's were groominig.
                            Marsh
                            Bryant
                            Royal
                            Gaff
                            McKinnely/Stokely

With that, you have to respect the deep ball with Bryant and occasionally Marshall, with major yac still coming from Marsh as well, if Eddie can be rejuvenated by the slot I would take our receiving corps against anyone, especially if Boldin gets dealed.

I'm just throwing this out there.... Saw we trade Brandon Marshall for a 1st & 3rd.... IF we had the chance.... would you prefer to:

                              1. Draft Dez Bryant and another 1st (Iupati or something)

                              or

                              2. Package both 1st round picks and trade up for Suh or Clausen? Especially N-Suh?

Not saying we would be able to pull it off... BUT.... wonder if it's possible? AND, if so.... would you?
