  • Mcdaniels Speaks about upcoming draft (gives clues...)

On the 2009 draft class and whether he will evaluate the organization's approach to the 2010 draft

"This year's draft should be totally different for us. We changed our system in the middle of the entire process last year. We didn't get an opportunity to have a full season to use the system and a full offseason to use the full grading scale in the evaluation process. Certainly, we changed some of the things we were looking for in individual players-if it was a bigger player here or a faster player there or whatever it may be.

Our criteria is all in place, our scouts now know the whole thing and our personnel department is very well versed on that now and we will have an entire offseason where we are not trying to just fill staff positions and do so many things to the roster that hopefully we did last year. We should have an opportunity to really have a solid four months here to get ready for the draft and narrow it down."

Given what Josh Mcdaniels said in his final press conference, and hearing what he stated at the end of the year (about getting dominated in the trenches).... I think it's clear what direction we're going to go in the upcoming draft: rebuild the tents in the trenches!

On offense: This means tweaking the O-line to compliment the transition to a power-running team.

    On defense: Remake the DL.

Surely it's not as simple as that. BUT, I think OG, OC, DE are clearly major needs. I sort of think we'll take the same approach this year.... which we employed last year with regards to the DBs.... Grab free agent vets who can do what we want to do (and back them up with young draft picks who'll learn to take their place).

We'll probably have a luxury pick in the first 3 rounds... maybe it's the BPA route (like a Mcclain or Haden in the 1st round), a RB in the 3rd round, a WR we feel is too good to pass on.

BUT, overall.... I think we'll see the Broncos draft heavy on linemen. I wouldn't be surprised if we draft 4 linemen in April.

I do think we'll trade Marshall, and maybe even something else.... I expect us to accumulate another 2-3 picks for sure....

ILB who can cover and stop the run; OG, OC; DE plus a NT/DE combo; WR.

    Away we go.

Anyway.... Mcdaniels said "they now know what they need and have scouted it all year" ... Hey, given we passed on thr DL last draft.... To me, this shouts that we are rebuilding the D-line this year.... And with the running game the way it was.... And the fact we want to get away from the ZBS scheme... Bank on us fixing the O-line as well.

It may not be sexy.... but it's absolutely neccesary!

Agree. We need to get bigger on both interior lines. I do hope we sign some DL instead of draft them. They take 2+ years to develop. Jolly, Spears, Hampton, Seymour. Whatever happens with Marshall, happens. If we keep him, great, if not, we get more picks to build to this team.

I think this validates the fact that McDaniels did have a lot to learn as a head coach and the team was behind in the assessment of players. It also shows that he is willing to change and adapt and is not the ego-maniac that many haters make him out to be. I espect this draft will be even better and I expect this off-season FA class to be outstanding - Depending on the CBA of course

About 5 days from now a year ago, Josh McDaniels was hired to be the coach. Before he could even begin to start delving into draft prospects, he had to assemble a complete coaching staff besides 2 leftovers, and he also had to make crucial decisions on keeping/releasing players from the previous year.

This year, it's much easier for him to consume himself in the draft process, and I think as a result we will see a lot more players on the Big Board, and also a lot more obvious picks. As we all know, a lot of the picks last year were head scratchers. But, apart from Schluecter, I remain positive about the future of our '09 Draft Class, especially if we build both lines for Moreno and Ayers, as they are directly effected by both.

Agree. Everything you said is pin point correct. Had to get rid of the players on defense, etc. Webster, McCree, DRob, Manuel, Bly, Winborn, Niko, etc. Overall, i think this draft will be very good. I also agree our 09 draft can still be good. It's way too early to call them busts after one year. I like the potential of all of them. In McDaniels i trust. :go::salute!:

I say screw it and lets just throw everything at 3 players.

            1. Somehow trade up with St Louis and draft N. Suh

            2. Draft Mike Iupati - 6'" 330lbs Guard

            3. Maurkice Pouncey - 6'5" 315lbs Center

Suh isn't worth the money that he is going to get. We could sign Seymour for a lot less money and we know that he is a beast. He is a good player just going to get a crazy contract like all top 5 picks gets.

I don't think Oakland will just let Seymour go after giving up a 2011 1st Round Pick.

How many years has Seymour played. If more than 6 years he might be a UFA. But Oakland could still tender him.

Good point though. It will cost Oakland alot to sign him.

Seymour is a UFA not a RFA like all of the younger guys who would have been UFA's this year but are getting screwed over by the CBA. Seymour is 29 so who ever is the highest bidder gets the goods as long as he wants to go there. I think he will get franchise tagged but you never know.

If im not mistaken I believe Darnell Dockett is a RFA, I live in AZ and this guy is a beast with a high motor! I would love for us to get him he is not injury prone and does not take plays off. He is worth it trust me! i know its just a small piece of the puzzle but we need game changers and he does it.

I totally concur with this... I mean, I'm not sure if Moreno-Ayers will be All-Pro type players.... but WHO CARES right? They aint busts. I know for sure we got two productive players who will be starting here for years to come (God willing). Like you said, if we build the lines, their play wil improve dramatically. We all knew Ayers was a project.... I saw enough this year to know he'll adjust to the speed of the game. For every play he was one step late, I expect him to be there a step earlier next season.

I look at the draft and think of 2 picks (Mcbath & Bruton). We all thought William Moore or something would be the better choice, but Darcel? What? BUt he was excellent this year. GOOD PICK there. We scratched our heads when yet another DB was taken.... But he was fantastic on ST.

We saw Mcdaniels go for specific things in the draft last year.... specialization.... He knew what type of football players he wanted, even if he wasn't set on the systems yet.

SO.... he went for those players (top RB in class, a high-ceiling pass rusher, a playmaking CB, a ball-hawk FS, a blocking TE, a ST gunner ace, an OL prospect from Iowa, a QB & a WR)....

This year, with his system in place.... we'll build the foundation (both lines)... I think they now have FOUR months to focus solely on the draft.... NO getting the feet wet, not Cutler mess, no hiring of coaches, no wondering who the GM and scouts were...

AND, the biggest thing.... THEY HAD A FULL SEASON to scout and scour the country looking for the players they want to plug in.

I'm excited already. I was listening to Shanny today.... I was so happy for him, but at the same time I came to the epiphany that I'm finally settle and comfortable with Mcdaniels!

Seymour will be unrestricted, but he might get franchised. We will see.....

Everything hinders on whether B-Marsh leaves in FA or is traded away... If he is, then there is no doubt we need to go after an impact WR via FA or the draft.

Drafting Dez Bryant and going after a stud DE or NT like Seymour or Wilfork would be ideal...
