  • Where's the beef? This mock delivers it!

I keep hearing all of this talk about how we need to beef up our lines, well I've comprised a mock off-season to beef up both lines, read and enjoy!

    First off, these guys are goners;
QB Chris Simms, RB Lamont Jordan, OT Tyler Polumbus, G Ben Hamilton, DL Marcus Thomas, DL Vonnie Holiday, LB Andra Davis, S Vernon Fox, and P Mitch Berger
These guys don't fit my plans, don't need em, don't want em!

    Now onto our RFA's:
QB Kyle Orton (1st round tender)
WR Brandon Marshall (1st and 3rd round tender)
TE Tony Scheffler (2nd round tender)
G Chris Kuper (5th round tender)
K Matt Prater (2nd round tender)

We extend Elvis with a 5 or 6 year deal!

Now, odviously no one is gonna give up a 1st for Kyle Orton, so he stays, Scheffler stays as well, and no one will give up a 2nd for Prater, so he stays!

Mike Shanahan will jump all over Chris Kuper for a 5th, Kuper is solid but I really don't think he fits what we need on the interior o-line.

I think there are 2 teams that would be more than happy to part ways with a 1st and 3rd for Marshall. The Ravens and the Jets, mainly because both of these teams are a stud WR away from being Super Bowl contenders. If the Jets or Ravens sign Marshall it should give us a pick in the low 20's!

So, we get a 1st and 3rd from either the Jets or Ravens for Marshall and we get a 5th for Kuper!

    Free Agent additions:
    G/C Eugene Amano (Tennessee)
Might cost some money but will be well worth the price.

    OT Jon Jansen (Washington)
We sign him to a 1 year deal to back up Harris. Jansen is getting a little long in the tooth but he should be a nice reserve!

    DE Richard Seymour (Oakland)
He is over 30 but still has much game. He will step right in and be a dominant run stuffng force on our d-line. Plus anytime we can steal anyone from Oakland it feels good.

    CB/KR Ellis Hobbs (Philly)
He adds depth at CB and will immediately give our return units a boost, should be a bargain.

I know, I know, 2 more former Patriots, come on KWHIT. Well we may as well not fight it, McDaniels is gonna bring in his guys and these dudes can flat out play.

    The draft:
Round 1. WR Dez Bryant (Oklahoma St.) 6'2" 220 lbs.
If we move Marshall we MUST get a replacement, I am not sold on the idea of Gaffney being our #1 WR. Bryant has more natural talent than Brandon and is more of a vertical threat plus he will be the BPA here.

Round 1. *(from Marshall) ILB Brandon Spikes (Florida) 6'3" 258 lbs.
If he is available with this pick he should be the pick. He is a banger that will help the run D. For all of you that are still stewing from us passing on Maulauga, this should ease the pain.

    Round 2. G Jon Asamoah (Illinois) 6'5" 315 lbs.
I am very high on this kid and think he will fit very well at LG for us. He could start as a rookie and will add the punch our running game needs.

Round 3. DE Vince Oghobasse (Duke) 6'5" 305 lbs.
He seems to be a favorite on these boards. He can be groomed as a DE in our 3-4 and will add good size and athleticism to the position.

Round 3. *(from Marshall) G John Jerry (Ole Miss) 6'6" 335 lbs.
He has had his struggles but really looked at home at RG. He has great size and is a classic mauler, exactly what our o-line needs.

Round 4. OT Sam Young (Notre Dame) 6'8" 320 lbs.
He is a project but has the size to possibly be a future RT for us. He should be available here and would be a good value.

Round 5. *(from Kuper) P Zoltan Mesko (Michigan) 6'5" 230 lbs.
It's no secret Punter was a weak spot for us this year. Mesko has a big leg and seems to have nice placement on his punts.

Round 6. NT Cam Thomas (North Carolina) 6'3" 330 lbs.
He can dominate at times. He can be groomed at NT in our 3-4 and adds much needed size.

Round 7. QB Zac Robinson (Oklahoma St.) 6'3" 218 lbs.
Here's a pick to please the masses. He has a nice arm and will be a nice project for McDaniels.

    Roster breakdown below!

    With this off-season our roster breaks down like this;

    Quarterbacks
Kyle Orton gets 1 more year to prove himself and if he can't cut it I feel more than confident we can find our future starter out of Brandstater, Martin, and Robinson. I think Brandstater is gonna be something special and am hoping he can claim the #2 spot on the depth chart in training camp.

    Running backs
Moreno is the future, like it or not. Him and Buckhalter compliment eachother very well and I really think this will be a strength in 2010. Hopefully Hillis can buck up and claim the #3 spot. Larsen is a solid FB.

    Wide Recievers
With Bryant on board this group will not skip a beat. We can keep Bryant and Gaffney on the outside and finally put Eddie where he belongs in the slot. Stokley, Lloyd, and McKinley round out a great recieving core.

    Tight Ends
I think we can get another good year or two out of Graham while Quinn is groomed to replace him. Scheffler and McD settle thier differences and he sticks around for 1 more year to add another good recieving threat.

    O-Line
Clady is our rock on the left side. I like Ryan Harris at RT and think he fits the bill well. The Amano signing addresses our Center situation with Weigemann backing him up. I feel confident we can find 2 good starters out of the rookies Asamoah and Jerry as well as Hochstein and Seth Olsen. Kaczur and rookie Sam Young provide good depth at Tackle.

    D-Line
My plan here involves Chris Baker stepping up and claiming the starting NT job. Then we can slide Ronald Fields to one of the DE spots along with Richard Seymour. Ryan McBean, Kenny Peterson, Vince Oghobasse, and Cam Thomas should make nice rotational players.

    Linebackers
Wow, what a group. With DOOM manning the weak side and Haggan keeping his spot on the Right side we can move Ayers in on passing downs until he is ready to claim a starting spot. DJ and Spikes round out a sensational LB group. Wesley Woodyard remains the top reserve on the inside.

    Cornerbacks
I think we can get one more good year out of Champ and Goodman until Smith is ready to take a starting gig. Tony Carter was a nice surprise this year as an UDFA and FA addition Ellis Hobbs makes for some nice depth.

    Safeties
Dawkins is still the man, and Bruton is a star in the making. I think Darcel McBath steals a starting job in year 2 and I love the thought of Bruton and McBath as our future starters here. Reynaldo Hill moves to a reserve role and provides good depth.

    Kicker
I like Prater and think he will only get better. I do think we should bring an UDFA to compete with him in TC though.

    Punter
This is Mesko's job to lose. But with Britton Colquitt and AJ Trapasso on the roster the competition should be fierce.

    Returners
Eddie has mad skills as a Punt returner and Hobbs will boost our Kick-off return units.

This is my best mock yet, if I do say so myself. Comments very welcome!

I like it. I'm still left a little concerned with the situation regarding our interior O-line, I don't really like the idea of letting Kuper leave, but overall I like it, especially the draft.

Overall, pretty good. I disagree with your assessment and value of Kuper. When healthy, he's shown the ability to be a force in both the run and passing game. I think he gets tendered for a second, and we keep him.

Fail - Trade Chris Kuper for 5th Round Pick????

Are you serious???? He isn't going anywhere. Our Offensive Line Struggles were because Hamilton struggled , Weigman got old and Harris got injured!!!!!

FYI - Go to espn.com and look up draft - Mel Kiper and Todd McShay say Brandon Spikes might fall til 3rd Round because of speed issues. 2nd Round is as high as he will go.

I agree if we was to rank our lineman now it would be Clady as the number one followed by Harris then Kuper in a close third, everyone else is at about the same standard which is very average at best.

I think the Pats will do whatever it takes to keep Mankins, making Kaczur expendable. He has had some legal troubles but has alot of starting expierience and knows McDaniels well.

The Pats signed Kazcur to an extension through 2012. We already have 2 good young tackles in Harris and Clady, we could use better depth. I'd like it if we got Mankins. I think it's the exact opposite. They will do everything to keep Wilfork. He's one of, if not the best NT in the league and will try to resign him. I think we keep Holliday and Davis. Holliday was one of our better DE's this year, i think we'll give him a 2 year deal. Davis should stay, we dont have much depth at linebacker.

Why in the world would Denver not keep Kris Kuper? He is quietly becoming one of the best guards in the NFL. That would be taking a step back, not forward.

That's just as ridiculous and illogical as the other guy trading Ryan Harris for a 3rd.

Yeah, lets chip away at the core of our young and promising O-line. That'd help this team out a lot.

Wow, odviously the Kuper deal hit a nerve. I just wouldn't be surprised to see this happen as McDaniels has said that he wants to get bigger on both lines and it seems someone will be let go, even though we may not like it.

So say we sign Kuper to a 2nd round tender instead, does Shanny bite or not?

Draw your own conclusions fellas. Bottom line is I don't think Kuper is what McDaniels wants on the interior O-line. I know people are still in love with Shanny's guys but Kuper is expendable.

I wasn't that impressed with Kuper this year as he did not get the push he should have in the run game. He is a zone-blocking guard which is the reason Shanny drafted him.

This draft is all about adding beef to the O-line, and Kuper does not fit the bill!

KWHIT I completely agree with you about Kuper. He's got great young talent, but we couldn't run a ball, LEFT OR RIGHT. We don't need a mix of zone and power run blocking. It's time for Kuper to go and to solidify the O-line.

As for the 5th round pick, I assume we can get more than that for him.
