  • DW#127's 1st Mock!

Okay so this is my first mock EVER. So I completely understand if you guys think it sucks.

    Cuts/No Re-sign

Jarvis Moss - I think McD is gonna give up on Jarvis

Chris Simms - He is the worst QB I have ever seen. Plus he is ste to take a nice bonus in salary.

Mitch Berger - Had a terrible year. I just don't see him being here next year.

Vernon Fox - Just an injury add at the end of this year. Likely gone next year.

Ben Hamilton - Likely will retire

Casey Wiegman - Doesn't fit our PBS so he may retire but is probably gone either way.

Lamont Jordan - Didn't do much this year. There will be better options.

Marcus Thomas - IMO does not fit a 3-4 well. Better off with a 4-3 team.

Brandon Stokely - McD and him don't seem to get along, may retire.

Nick Greisen - Injured all year, likely won't be back.

    Re-Signings

Kyle Orton - (2-year deal) McD gives him another year or 2 to see if he is the guy or not.

Elvis Dumervil - (5-year deal) No brainer here. One of the premier pass rushers in the game.

Brandon Lloyd - (2-year deal) He gives us big play ability and would be a nice receiver to have.

Ty Law - (1-year deal) He plays one more year and helps tutor the young guys in the secondary. Then becomes an assistant coach.

Ryan McBean - (3-year deal) He had a solid year this year and will only get better.

Le Kevin Smith - (2-year deal) Solid backup to have.

Wesley Woodyard - (3-year deal) Good backup and terrific ST player.

Russ Hochstein - (1-year deal) solid backup, familiar with the system.

    Free Agents

LB Karlos Dansby - (6-year deal) This is my big FA signing. Reports are that he is leaving ARZ. He is a beast in very sense of the word. He rushes the passer, stuffs the run and covers as well as any LB in the NFL. He als has experience at playing ILB and OLB in the 3-4. He will be expensive, but is worth every penny. Pair him with DJ and Andra Davis as the backup, then put Doom and Ayers outside that is one beastly 3-4 LB core.

DE Dwan Edwards - (4-year deal) Denver gets this big 3-4 rush end for an instant upgrade at DL.

G Montrae Holland - (2-year deal) Coming back to Denver. The big guard will have the opportunity to start but may also be a backup.

FB Terrelle Smith - (1-year deal) He is cheap and an adequate FB and a terrific blocker.

NT Ryan Pickett - (3-year deal) Had a great year with GB and would be a perfect fit here.

QB Chad Pennington - (1-year deal) May have a hard time finding a team that wants him as a starter. He fits McD's QB mold and would be a great backup for Orton and allow Brandstater to develop.

RB Chester Taylor - (3-year deal) A great 3rd down back for Denver. With Buck's injury issues Chester Taylor becomes a great option.

TE Ben Watson - (4-year deal) A McD guy gives us a receiving threat at the TE position.

WR Malcolm Floyd - (4-year deal) Great size at 6'5 225 gives us a big wideout.

    Trades

Broncos trade Brandon Marshal to the Miami Dolphins for their 1st (12th overall), and 3rd (73rd overall)

Broncos trade Tony Scheffler to the Arizona Cardinals for their 4th (122 overall)

Broncos trade Peyton Hillis to the Washington Redskins for their 7th (196 overall).

    Draft Order

    1st - 10/11 overall
    1st - 12th overall
    2nd - 45th overall
    3rd - 81st overall
    4th - 112th overall
    4th - 122nd overall
    6th - 174th overall
    7th - 196th overall
    7th - 205th overall
    7th - 214th overall

    Draft

1st (10/11th overall) - WR Dez Bryant OSU- Signing Dansby eliminates Ronaldo McClain here. With Marshall gone we need another WR. Bryant is a great pick here. He has brought some comparisons to Andre Johnson. He has speed, great hands and stretches the field.

1st (12th overall) - OG Mike Iupati Idaho - He is quickly moving up on a lot of mocks and will be in the top 15 before its all over. He is the best G to come through the draft in quite some time. He is an animal and would be a great choice here as interior O-Line is a huge need. Iupati and Clady will be a great left side for years to come.

2nd (45th overall) - C Maurkice Pouncey Florida - He is a force on the OL for Florida. He is physical, and big. He can bring the same intensity to our OL where once again interior OL is a huge need.

3rd (81st overall) - WR/RB/KR Dexter McCluster Ole Miss - He is small but is lightning quick and very versatile. He can be a RB, line up in the slot, returns kicks and punts. He reminds me a lot of Chris Johnson. Dexter McCluster could really open up McD's offense.

4th (112th overall) - CB Amari Spivey Iowa - He may be gone here but I think he may fall to us. If he s gone I would expect to take Jamar Wall here. Spivey has good size for a corner and a lot of potential. He is drawing comparisons to a Champ Bailey/Darelle Revis type of corner. I think he would be a real steal here.

4th (122nd overall) - DE Vince Oghobaase Duke - Denver gets this big DL who I think he can really excel in our 3-4 with Nun coaching him up.

6th (174th overall) - Zoltan Mesko P Michigan - Likely the best P in the draft at this point P is a nice choice here as it was a very inconsistent part of the team this year. Zoltan can be a very good punter in the NFL.

7th (196th overall) - LeGarrette Blount RB Oregon - He has big time character issues, but if he can prove he has changed, McD may consider him in the 7th. He is a great talent and if he can get it together personally he could be a huge steal here.

7th (205th overall) - WR Freddie Barnes Bowling Green - This would be an excellent pick in the 7th if he is still here. He would really round out a great young receiving corps.

7th (214th overall) - DL Linval Joseph E. Carolina - 6'6 300lbs he would have an opportunity to make the team as a backup DE.

I hope you enjoyed my mock and I would love to hear your comments! :go:

Looks good and that would definitely be a great FA period, but I think you messed up and gave us 3 7th rounders instead of a 6th rounder and 2 7th's. Also I don't think Freddie lasts until the 7th. He'll be drafted in the 4th-5th round.

        Great job!!!

I really like all the players you have drafted.

I do think that some of the players might go a little higher than were you have them slotted(Pouncey 25-45th) , (Freddie Barnes 3rd-5th) and (Linval Joseph 3rd-5th) but I would be STOKED if we got 90% of your draft.

I think you have a very good concept on what Denver's needs are!!!

        Good Job

according to this we have 2 7ths plus the Hillis trade so that makes 3 but this site may be wrong.

The site is wrong. We picked up an additional 7th rounder in the LeKevin Smith trade - we traded our 5th for Smith and a 7th. We then traded the additional 7th back to New England for Russ Hochstein.

Nice draft saying Iupati will be a top 15 pick is a little bold. Guards rarely ever go in first round first of all. Also he hasnt looked to hot in the senior bowl practice now thats not hurting his stock. But to raise it to a top 15 choice he would have to do some pretty amazing stuff in the next few months. But seeing as we would probably be able to pick him up later in the 1st I think we would trade back our first and pick up another 1st and one other pick to benefit ourself and not waste a pick one a guy that would normally fall a little more.

One of the better mocks I've read.

A bit early for Iupati, I believe we could trade down a bit and still get him.

And mock Hillis to Houston, a place where a powerback is actually needed.

I dont see him sliding past Buffalo.

I like the mock, I think our offense would be much improved. However, I worry abut starting 2 rookies at interior O-line.

                        Hi

Nice read. Thanks. I have not done a mock myself but I do like reading them. My comments are mostly "minor" disagreements and what I would prefer to see / expect to see, no offence, you've worked quite hard on it.

                        Anyway...

Can't disagree with the cuts/no-resigns BUT, I would love it if we could find a way to keep Stokley and he contributes next season

Re-signings. Agreed but I think Orton will only get a 1 year deal OR if he does get 2-3 years I think it'll be quite cap friendly and allow him to be cut after 1 year without any serious financial ramifications

Free Agents. I would love Pennington as a back up QB actually. I don't see us making our marquee FA signing a LB (Dansby). Too many needs in the trenches for me. Would rather the big money went on a Centre/Guard or D-Lineman. Overall I think you've allowed yourself quite a treat with the free agent signings. It would be an excellent off-season but quite unrealistic I feel. Just because it's cap-free I still don't expect Bowlen to pull a Daniel Snyder Although there's no Haynesworth in your picks, that would be a heck of a lot of salary and signing bonus' to even land 75% of those players!

Trades. I'd be shocked if we swindle the 12th pick for B-Marsh. I agree with MUG on that one. Too much drama with him. I actually hope he stays now as I don't think we are going to get anything higher than a very late 1st or a package of a 2nd and maybe a 4th.

                        I don't think we'll get higher than a 5th or 6th for Scheff

I think if we get anything for Hillis it will be tiny, like moving up in the 7th by 10 spots or something. I hope he stays as he's cheap and we won't get peanunts for him in a trade.

Draft - No matter what happens in Free Agency, I'd be shocked to my core if we wait until the 6th round to draft a D-Lineman EDIT: SORRY YOU HAVE ONE IN 4th!!!!!!!!! I know we've drafted D-Lineman quite high over the years but that was Shanahan, that wont stop McD going for them. I expect 3 D-Lineman from this draft with two of them coming in the first 4-rounds.

I'm pleased with two O-Lineman in the first 45 picks like what you've done. Not sure about Iupati value at 12. Be nice if we could trade back a few slots, grab a 3rd rounder and still get Iupati at 16 or 17.

I want Marshall to stay unless we can get a Top 15 Draft pick AND something else like a starter or 3rd Rounder but I dont think that'll happen.

If we keep B-Marsh I hope our R1 goes on an O-Lineman or D-Lineman if there is value there at our spot.

Welcome to the world of mockdrafting, it gets addicting fast.

                            Thoughts:

                            1) Unless we sign Kevin Mawae in Free Agency, I don't think we are going to cut Wiegmann. This draft is questionable at OC, seemingly only having a handful of possible rookie starters. And while Pouncey is one of those, I can't imagine we want a College Junior-declare starting immediately. We need someone to work him in behind. I think one more year of Wiegmann is very likely at this point. And I looked at his individual metrics from last season, he wasn't as bad as I had originall thought.

                            2) Re-signing McBean. We should avoid this if possible. Peterson and McBean were the absolute worst starting duo of 3-4 DEs in the NFL. Statistically. Both have zero pass rush, and both are bad against the run. Peterson is worse than McBean by a mile though.

                            3) I'm not sure Karlos Dansby makes sense unless you are cutting DJ Williams. Williams graded out poorly this season, so that is possible. Woodyard graded out as a solid nickel LB, and Davis graded out superb as a TED. This is a lot of money to upgrade a position of strength. The TED LB's job is to attack blocks, which would drastically limit Dansby's effectiveness. He was a JACK in Arizona, same as DJ.

                            4) Holland is 345 lbs now. He doesn't fit McD's scheme. McD likes his guards to pull and trap. You need a fair amount of athleticism for that. The largest OG to ever play under McD was 315 lbs. Most were in the 305 range.

                            5) Ryan Pickett is close to resigning with Green Bay. It's been reported the last few weeks, so he's probably not likely to see Free Agency. Meanwhile, Dwan Edwards is supposably the Ravens' top priority to lock up. He's more likely to see Free Agency than Pickett, but still unlikely.

                            6) Very unlikley Ben Watson comes here. He wants to be a focal point of an offense, and he knows all too well that the TE in McD's scheme barely gets the ball.

                            7) It will be shocking if the Chargers don't place a very high tender on Floyd. We will have to give up draft picks to get him, and I'd assume SD would match almost regardless.

                            8) Miami will not trade for Marshall. It won't happen. He is not a Parcells-type guy. Meanwhile, on a personal level, I still don't think Marshall will get a 1st Round pick in return. He is damaged goods due to his off-the-field issues and being a mistake away from a very long suspension. A 2nd and a 4th is more likely to me, but that is just my opinion.

                            9) Scheffler for a 4th is very optimistic, especially in a year with a massively deep TE draft. I hope it happens.

                            10) Iupati is not worth a 12th Overall pick. What we saw at the Senior Bowl is a guy that is a LG only right now, and with extensive teaching, could translate to RT. Neither of those positions are worthy of that high of a selection.

                            11) I believe Pouncey goes in the Mid-Late 1st, specifically to Pittsburgh, Philly, Dallas, or Minnesota.

                            12) Spievey goes in the 2nd or early 3rd. He's a very good CB prospect. And if he runs well, he could go Late 1st. He has shutdown skills.

                            13) Zesko bombed at the Senior Bowl week. He is passed by Matt Dodge now. Zesko showed inconsistency, he struggled with hangtime, but most importantly, he has a very slow drop to foot kicking motion, and that will result in a lot of blocks.

                            14) Blount may stay in the 7th due to off-the-field stuff, but both Barnes and Joseph should come off the board two rounds earlier. Barnes especially.

Overall, I can tell you put time and effort into the mock, and it was a good read. I think it is extremely optimistic towards the Denver Broncos though. We are getting premium Free Agents, premium trade value, and steals in almost every draft round. I would love if your draft happened. I would put it's realistic factor at 1% though.

Meanwhile, on a personal level, I still don't think Marshall will get a 1st Round pick in return. He is damaged goods due to his off-the-field issues and being a mistake away from a very long suspension. A 2nd and a 4th is more likely to me, but that is just my opinion.
On the Parcells thing, I'll disagree with you slightly and respectfully.

While I absolutely agree Marshall is a huge risk for any franchise, thus why I want him gone, history suggests Parcells has made very controversial decisions on very controversial players. Quincy Carter, Keyshawn Johnson and Terrell Owens come to mind. It's ironic as well that the last two are receivers. Jerry Jones certainly had a certain amount of sway in those personnel decisions, no doubt, but the fact remains Parcells pulled the trigger in selecting players with character issues.

Yes, Marshall isn't the prototypical "Parcells" guy, but that doesn't shut the door completely as you suggest.
