  • Alphonso Smith/Perrish Cox

If i had to draft any CB to start along A. Smith, it would be CB from Oklahoma St. Perrish Cox. Cox is 5'11 189lbs runs a 4.44. What i like about him is that he has good speed, plays the ball very well, very good leaping ability, tackles well, good in man coverage, he also battles with Dez Bryant everyday in practice, so if Scouts say that Bryant is the NFL ready then Cox has to be NFL ready.

I know some of you has already considered Smith a bust or not worth a 1st rd pick. I'm a person who believes that Smith is still the same CB that we drafted last year. While i do believe Smith benefits from learning from Champ & Goody, IMO what Smith need is another CB that will compete with him for the NickelBack spot. I'm not knocking late round or undrafted CB's, but if we draft a CB in the 2nd or 3rd rd, IMO that will be the spark he needs to get back to the Smith we drafted.

Smith was given the Nickel spot and it was obvious that he wasn't going to beat out Champ, he's Champ, and Goody just sign with the team as a FA, with a decent contract. If we draft Cox or Kyle Wilson to be the future with Smith, then they would strengthen each other.

I'm aware of the fact that Cox had some off the field issues, and some of y'all might say that McD will not draft him, and he may not, but during his end of the year presser, McD said that he would do some things differently next year, now in what areas? I don't know, but if he's going to make an open statement like that, then i'm going to pull for Cox until we don't draft him. I'll also take Kyle Wilson.

Our starting Secondary in two years, CB-Cox, Smith / Safety- McBath, Bruton!!!

Feel free to share your thoughts on your CB duo.

Honestly I just want somebody with size. San Diego has massive receivers and we need to be able to match up better with them. Champ can lock down on anybody, but he won't be here for much longer. 5'11 isn't bad size for a corner, but if we could get somebody around 6'1 ish I'd be stoked. I know it seems trivial to split hairs over 2 inches, but it makes a big difference.

I've heard good things about Cox though, I wouldn't mind seeing him in Denver.

Phonz will have trouble vs players like VJ.

Hopefully as Hoser has said, a tall corner is the go.

i agree 5'11 isnt bad but 6'0 or 6'1 makes a big difference when your covering a 6'5 receiver

          I love Cox.

No but seriously. He and Kyle Wilson (I think) are my top corners.
Except Cox has had some off the field problems.

Cox wont even be on Josh McDaniels board due to too many off the field problems.

I dont think we have been around McD long enough to know which way he goes on players with problems off field to make this judgement.

With that being said I dont think having 2 CBs under 6' would be the way to go, much less if A. Smith will even be able to beat out a UFA for a 3rd string job

Oh but we have. Last year McDaniels mentioned his board had roughly 100 players on it. He drafted squeaky clean, team leading players. His FA acquisitions were high character players. Finally, Denver's best player is a major characater concern, that's why McDaniels will entertain trading him in offseason.

So it iss very safe to assume any players with off field problems do not get put on his draft board.

McDaniels also said that they did not have enough time to be properly prepare for the draft last year, and that this year their board would be much bigger.

I do agree that McD places a high value on character, but its far too soon to rule anyone out at this point.

You're half right. He went after squeaky clean team leaders in the draft, but not when it came to UFA's. Chris Baker and Garrett Hartley are 2 players that he signed that both went undrafted due to off the field problems. I believe there were one or two more, but I need to go back and research that.

I don't think Alphonso Smith will ever be a starting CB.

Actually Tony Carter has a better chance considering he beat him out for Dime/Nickel corner spot.

Now I know we didn't draft him, but Chris Baker had off the field problems yet we still pursued him as an UDFA. When a person gets in trouble, it might not have been their fault. Wrong place wrong time, a bunch of different factors have to be weighed. I really like Cox. I think he would be a great consideration as our 2nd round pick...not my first choice, but definitely on my short list in second round. What matters most is his Coaches opinions of said player, and our scouts and Coaches perception of the player after they are interviewed at the combine.

I disagree, I really didn't think Alphonso Smith played bad in the first couple games. I saw him bat down two passes in the Cinci game and was impressed with his coverage. Something went wrong, whether it be a string of bad practices, not being able to pick up the scheme, but something happened. I think he will learn from this and will be a pretty good corner back. Definitely not our number 1 after Champ leaves, but not many teams are blessed with a Champ, Nnandi, or Revis. A shutdown corner is more seldom than a successful QB in this league.

This ^^.. 5-11 is good size for a corner, but we need 6-1/6-2+ corners with SD's WR's being 6-3 to 6-5. Chris Cook, Myron Lewis, Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, Donovan Warren. :go:

Unfortunately Warren is probably going to go inbetween our first and second selection. Unless of course trade happens. I would love for him to fall to us in the second...probably won't, but we still got a couple months. Both him and Cox are impressive, but if I had to go for one it would be Warren.
