So it iss very safe to assume any players with off field problems do not get put on his draft board.
I think they actually only had about 50 players on their board.

I agree, I think it's pretty clear they will only target guys that have high character qualities and at the very least have no off of the field issues.

Furthermore, the idea of two starting corners that can't even sniff the 4.3 range does not excite me. I don't say that to flame JayJack, it's just my initial thought on the subject.

Their may have been some turnover in the front office, but Joe Ellis is still there, and he is the only one who has as much say so over the direction of the Broncos.

      Several things here...

First, it has been accurately explained that McDaniels does not go after character-adverse players in the draft, he probably doesn't want the financial restraint to keep him from cutting them if they act up. It also was mentioned that when this risk/restraint is removed, he will take a chance on a player with character issues. The debate here, regarding Parrish Cox, suggests Cox will not be on our draft board because Cox will be drafted within the Top 2 Rounds. He is character-adverse and offers a financial risk, which would preclude McDaniels from cutting him if he acts up in camp. If Cox were a late round draft choice, I think McD might make a go at him.

Second, McDaniels has mentioned that he prefers 5'11 CBs because taller CBs tend to lose the agility and quicks needed to cover NFL WRs. This is true because most CBs in the NFL are under 6'0. He seemed to mention this shortly after last draft when he took some heat for why he took Alphonso over Sean Smith. While we might want a taller CB to match up with San Diego's bigger WRs, McDaniels does not seem that concerned. And to be honest, a 5'11 guy that can jump 5 inches higher than a 6'2 guy is going to be more effective, especially if he has long arms. And he'll also be quick enough to stay with the smaller WRs.

The speed argument is a good one though. Nothing wrong with getting faster CBs.

      Anyway, just my thoughts.

Here is a list of the top 20 CB's in the draft, their height, weight, round projected to be drafted in, and projected forty time. What you will notice is, this years draft is not full of 4.3 speed or ideal height. I understand a lot of y'all concerns and they are valid. Truthfully I would love Kyle Wilson and if you've seen my 1st Mock draft, i had him in the 2nd rd. After watching Kyle at the Senior Bowl Practice, he has definately work himself into the 1st rd, 2nd at the latest. I also have concerns about bad character guys, but the Cox pick would be in the 3rd rd, i will not risk getting him earlier.

I say we are good at corner for now.....at least another year. Holdout till next season when Patrick Peterson from LSU comes out(he is a Junior but belive he will leave early). 6"1 197lbs runs a 4.45 40.....He is a very physical CB but will definatly need work on his backpedal footwork. Just a thought though......if we could address our needs this offseason we could possibly think about that next season.

I could be wrong, but I'm expecting Kyle to run about 1\10 of a second faster than that.

Remember now, running on the turf at Lucas Oil Stadium is comparable to running through sludge. He might be able to run that at his pro day.

Ah, I see....is that why none of them are projected to run sub 4.4?

                  Good year for CB

There's about 13 CBs this year who are worth using a 3rd or better on. Although, as usual there's not a lot of what people consider 1st round talent which is typically what people use to say if its a good draft for that position or not. There is a lot of future quality starting CBs in this draft, its a pretty good year using a 2nd/3rd on a CB.

What i like about him is that he has good speed, plays the ball very well, very good leaping ability, tackles well, good in man coverage, he also battles with Dez Bryant everyday in practice, so if Scouts say that Bryant is the NFL ready then Cox has to be NFL ready.

I know some of you has already considered Smith a bust or not worth a 1st rd pick. I'm a person who believes that Smith is still the same CB that we drafted last year. While i do believe Smith benefits from learning from Champ & Goody, IMO what Smith need is another CB that will compete with him for the NickelBack spot. I'm not knocking late round or undrafted CB's, but if we draft a CB in the 2nd or 3rd rd, IMO that will be the spark he needs to get back to the Smith we drafted.

Smith was given the Nickel spot and it was obvious that he wasn't going to beat out Champ, he's Champ, and Goody just sign with the team as a FA, with a decent contract. If we draft Cox or Kyle Wilson to be the future with Smith, then they would strengthen each other.

I'm aware of the fact that Cox had some off the field issues, and some of y'all might say that McD will not draft him, and he may not, but during his end of the year presser, McD said that he would do some things differently next year, now in what areas? I don't know, but if he's going to make an open statement like that, then i'm going to pull for Cox until we don't draft him. I'll also take Kyle Wilson.

Our starting Secondary in two years, CB-Cox, Smith / Safety- McBath, Bruton!!!

Well i hope everyone is right and Smith pans out. I am just hoping the drafting of Cox means McD lost hope for Smith.

Smith is not a nickelback. He needs to be on the outside. I think drafting Cox was a move to get ready for life after Champ. I mean to get a 1st-2nd rd talent, in the 5th rd was a major steal.

Perrish Cox was such a steal in 5th round many experts had in 2nd to 3rd round. I think he slipped due to character issues I hope he pans out for us.

Oh i know he was a steal, and during the draft i called Cox being picked up (and TX ate crow ). I am glad we got him, but Champ has been playng so well. When do you think he will start to decline? Could he be traded next offseason?

I'm not worried about him declining. He is in the last year of his contract, and for what he maybe asking for, it could be more than what we want to pay. We could put the F-Tag on him, and then take some calls from teams and settle for no less than a 2nd rd pick. But, i don't think Champ will be happy about that, unless he has a input as to where he goes.

Well JayJack it looks like we drafted Cox afterall! All of the talking heads in the media are saying that we literally stole this kid in the draft if he keeps his act together. They also said that we have such a solid veteran presence with Dawkins and Champ that Cox will be O.K.

Did the other teams forget about this kid or what?

Great Job McDaniels! I'm impressed with your draft.
