Brandon Marshall open to playing for Broncos next season

    By Mike Klis
    The Denver Post

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. — Call Brandon Marshall a talented receiver.

Call the Broncos' star receiver a magnet for drama and controversy.

    And now call him contrite.

"Learning from last year and last offseason, I approached things unprofessional," Marshall said today at the Super Bowl XLIV media center. "This offseason I'm just going to go with the flow and just go in whatever direction the Broncos want to go."

After not granting interviews during the Pro Bowl events last week, Marshall broke his silence today so he could promote the NFL 2009 Season in Review DVD that comes out June 1. Marshall's record-setting, 21-catch game against the Indianapolis Colts, who are here preparing to play the New Orleans Saints in Super Bowl XLIV, is featured prominently on the DVD.

Marshall was an unhappy Bronco last year when he protested his contract situation by holding out from a mandatory minicamp in June and acting up during a preseason practice in August. He put his issues behind him to make 101 catches through 15 games, but he found more trouble in the season's final week.

When he tweaked his hamstring in a Wednesday practice, and showed up 20 minutes late for treatment on Friday morning, Marshall was deactivated from the final game against Kansas City.

Is Marshall now having second thoughts about wanting leaving the Broncos?

"I don't know if I would call it, second thoughts," Marshall said. "Last year I handled things totally wrong. I just looked at the business side of things and took things too personally. This year I'm going to remove myself from the situation and let the Broncos decide the direction we're going to go in as an organization."

    ----------------------

This can only help his trade value. I'm sure this is a PR stunt to increase his standing in the eyes of potential suitors.... Trying to repair his image. BUT, with the current economic situation in the NFL, with an impending uncapped year and possible cancellation of the 2011 season....

Well, sounds like Brandon would accept the franchise tag.

I'm sure this remark does nothing to deter Mcdaniels, and he'll still seek a deal. BUT, if we are forced to trade THE BEAST for pennies on the dollar, I am now positive we'll simply TAG him and play through 2010 campaign.

Sounds like BM (as long as he's getting paid) will accept that.

I have gone back and forth on my feeling for Brandon Marshall - probably like most on this board.

But the more I think about it the more I hope we keep him. The main issue is Money. After 2 - 100 catch years Marshall wanted more money.

Was he under paid ???? Yes

Did he handle it the wrong way ??? Yes

Is his production on the field worth more money???? Yes

I do think that if we gave him a good contract - $8 million a year with alot of clauses for off the field problems.

There is not 1 WR in the draft who will have 100 catches in his first 4 seasons - let alone 3 out of 4.

    Who knows????

Where does it say that he will play for the Broncos next year??? Did they announce a contract extension?

That is not a fair assumption because no one really thought Marshall as a great WR prospect. A lot thought that he would have to put weight on and become a TE.

I would agree that any deal needs to have clauses in it for certain, the thing that bothers me is that a precedent has already been established and a team is not able to recoup as much money from a player as one might think.

If Denver gives him a $8 mil signing bonus, they are not able to recoup that money if Marshall would get himself into trouble.

"University of Pennsylvania Special Master Stephen Burbank agreed with the NFL Players Association that money already earned, such as a signing bonus, can't be forfeited even if a player subsequently gets into trouble, the union's general counsel Richard Berthelsen told The Associated Press."

He said he's open to playing for us next year.

If he can stay out of trouble, I want to keep him.

The title of the tread: Marshall says he will play for the broncos next year

I didn't see any statement in the initial post to that effect, so I was asking where he said that.
Is the thread title wrong? I'd love for it to be correct - it would be great news.

I think he meant it's unlikely, should we lose Marshall, we would be able to simply draft a replacement and expect the same level of performance immediately. Not that there's no potential for any of this draft class of WRs to find success, eventually.

I would be ecstatic should we give Marshall the contract he deserves, but we would probably have to put a pretty strict behavioral clause in there to make sure he knows he has to keep himself out of trouble.

we gave him an offer b4 this year but there was a lot of clauses like you mentioned and he rejected it

I heard rumors of that but there were no details on the offer. It sounds like Brandon Marshall is finally getting some good advice and maybe is maturing a little.

I again would be happy keeping him.

Hopefully someone mentioned to him that a player with a history of off-the-field issues is gonna have to deal with a lot of clauses that specify good behavior... I can't imagine any team offering him a contract without 'em considering his situation. If he's come to terms with that, we have as good a chance as anybody to sign him.

It's basically the overall gist of what he spoke of today:

"Learning from last year and last offseason, I approached things unprofessional," Marshall said today at the Super Bowl XLIV media center. "This offseason I'm just going to go with the flow and just go in whatever direction the Broncos want to go."

In essence, to me, Marshall is stating that he's OK with whatever. Sounds like he's relenting on his trade demands. I infer, from his comments, that he would accept a return to DENVER.... If the Broncos slap him with the franchise tag.

He says he'll let DENVER decide what happens next year and says "WE" talking about himself and the team.

This opens the door.... and personally, I believe this is a good sign b/c it would be foolish to trade BM for a 2nd round pick (or something less than his worth).

I think it might be too little too late. We heard the same things after his tantrum in T.C. Now we're hearing the same things after his 1 game suspension (albeit over a month later). I would like to have Marshall back, he's an elite talent. And him saying all the right things won't hurt his value/image. But I think we would be a little naive to believe that he is truly a changed guy, and after the track record with not just McD, but with the Broncos organization since he was drafted, it might just be too much built up to just let it pass and give him a mega deal.

But regardless if he's back or not, we still are going to need a true deep-field playmaking talent on this roster at WR. Am I advocating Dez Bryant with or without Marshall? Possibly. But if we decide to keep Marshall and go in a different direction with our top pick, I would truly hope a high-upside, potential play-making WR is near the top of our list. Not only as an insurance piece in case Marshall loses his way again, but as a way to create deep field mismatches on the outside (cue the Orton/McD won't throw deep comments).

I think think that Drafting Dez Bryant - if we trade Brandon Marshall is a Great Move.

Now if we keep him - not so much. I would personally like

                              1. Dan Williams - NFL Body - would bring much needed size to Denver.
                              2. Rolando McClain - Great ILB
                              3. Mike Iupati - Could be ProBowl Guard

Denver's 2 Biggest needs - Stopping the Run and Running the ball. DLine and Oline.
