For example, with Fields, all he needs to do as a 3-4 NT is stop the run. I don't expect him to be a good pass rusher, and I don't really care about penalties because those can be fixed. So, to me, Fields was a decent starting NT, but not great, and certainly upgradeable.

Meanwhile, for a 3-4 DE, I want 75% run stoppage, and 25% pass rush. It's not all just clogging gaps, but that is the majority of the job description. So, there I look at Peterson's -14 against the run and McBean's -8 against the run, along with Peterson's -10 pass rush and McBean's -5. Clearly, Peterson is horrific, but that doesn't change McBean being terrible. I have no problem with McBean as a backup, I don't want either of these men starting. Ever Again.

If you go to the 3-4 DE positional rankings and play around, you'll see that both Peterson and McBean are in the bottom 5 in the NFL (out of 39 ranked 3-4 DEs) against the run. In terms of pass rush, bottom 8. In terms of overall grade (completeness/well-roundedness), bottom 6. These guys are both really bad and need to be upgraded immediately.

Depending on how Jared Odrick's background checks out, I think he's in serious play at #10/11. I think Dan Williams is obviously the main hope, but I think he'll be gone. Bryant is likely to be the best available player if he is still around, but who knows if McD will go that route, I would. There's certainly an argument that McClain could be a good pick, likewise with Haden. But as far as need, I think Odrick is right up there with Williams, as a prototype 3-4 D-line starter.
That makes sense; thanks for explaining.

I had seen another grading system around week 14 and McBean and Fields were pretty close to the same, while Peterson's grade was awful. I wish I knew which site it was.

I certainly think Odrick is a strong possibility. I of course am holding on to hope that Williams will be available. I don't see him shooting up as high as Raji did last year because he doesn't have the versatility that Raji did. KC should be the only concern ahead of us.

What do you think about Baker moving to DE?

I agree that KC is the only concern with Dan Williams, but it's a really, really big concern.

As for Baker, I'd be all for it over the current options. I'm hoping Pedescleaux is ready to challenge next year too.

Baker is really the ultimate enigma for us as fans. We know he has a ton of talent, I thought he was the 2nd best NT prospect behind Raji last draft. We know he dominated as a 5 tech while at Hampton, so he has some versatility. But he wasn't played this year, so that suggests he is not ready, especially while the rest of our D-line struggled so much.

If we simply knew what the coaches thought about Baker, it would be so much easier to mock our offseason.
