  • Chris Baker - NT - other NFL fans before last draft on him as a DE, NOT a NT

Thought this was interesting, I wish I knew what the coach thought of him, he could be one DE solution next season

That's an interesting dialogue. It would be cool to know what the coaches think of him. There have been a few of us in this forum that have speculated about having him at DE and drafting someone like Dan Williams to play NT, if he's available.

I still think the fact we didn't let him touch the PS means he is in our plans for the future (starting next season)

If he was on the PS, he would of been grabbed the next day. I like Baker a lot and think hes the future NT or at DE. Very versitale player, i could see him starting next year. He'll only be 22 next year lol. I think he'll be part of the DL next year. Maybe a DL of Baker, Fields, Green, sounds good to me. :go:

I would be ecstatic if we could land one of the top FA NT's like Wilfork, Franklin, Hampton, or Pickett, then draft a guy like Tyson Alalu in the 2nd round.

Baker, Franklin, and McBean with Fields rotating in would just be sick!

325+ pound DE? hello haloti ngata!

but seriously though, i didn't know about this bit of info before. this is great news because as an NT he would have been slightly undersized at best, but hes huge as a DE. glad we can beef up the line without sacrificing speed.

                  DL in a 3-4 D ...

                  ... ought to be interchangeable.

5 techs. & NTs should be able to swap.

Sometimes you find things out about OL & DL when you move them around.

Interesting thoughts, but i believe Baker can play both positions at a high level, just because he is 6'2 doesn't mean a thing, Ronald Fields is 6'2 and he was our starter last year.

Since when is 330 undersized at NT? Fields is only 315.

I completly agree with you, 330 is plenty big. I think baker can rotate to both, and I'd like to see linval Joseph here this draft to rotate both positions as well. Most have Joseph as a nt but I think he would be highly effective as a run stuffing DE.
I think fields was effective enough this season. If we had a DL with baker Joseph and fields I think we would be plenty big and strong. Enough for this upcoming season to adress other issues in the draft like OL, a deep threat wr, and more depth at all positions.

Hampton is 325, Ratliff is 300, Pickett is 322. 325 is a perfect size at NT for Baker. Dockett is only 285 and he's a animal.

Dockett plays in the 5-tech spot most of the time though. But yea, he is a beast, and the times he does play the NT spot, he plays it well. I think it is mostly in the best interest of his longevity and versatility that he doesn't play many snaps from that spot.

                              Baker

Good point regarding Baker and the practice squad. Everything does point to the coaches having plans for Baker on the defensive line this year.

I don't really care if its DT or DE if this guy can make an impact then get him on the field!

Sure would be nice if we draft a monster of a D-lineman in the 1st rd and pick up a starter through Free Agency and add Mr. Chris Baker! Sweeeeet!
