  • Franchise tag for Aubrayo Franklin

As expected, the San Francisco 49ers will use the franchise tag on nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the move is coming; the deadline is February 25. Per Schefter, the Niners are expected to work toward signing Franklin to another long-term deal.

He arrived in San Fran from Baltimore via free agency in 2007, reuniting with former 49ers coach Mike Nolan, who previously coordinated the Ravens' defense. Franklin has developed into one of the best defensive tackles in the game, and the market for his services would be much greater this time around.

As Schefter points out, Franklin is one of three nose tackles who are expected to be slapped with the franchise tag -- the others are Vince Wilfork of the Patriots and Casey Hampton of the Steelers.

As expected, the San Francisco 49ers will use the franchise tag on nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin.

No surprise here. Wilfork will get re-signed or tagged. Hampton will get tagged. Pickett will likely get an extension. Slim market, but DE was more of our problem then NT.

No.. I like Baker at NT, and dont want to spend a Top 10-11 pick on a NT and wait 2 years for them to develop. I hope we trade down and gather more picks.

Chris baker is better fit for DE, dan willams would come in and have an immediate impact

I'd rather have McClain if he's there, or trade back and gather more picks. DL take 2 years to develop, if not more. Fields wasnt that bad at NT, our DE's were the problem. We need to sign Edwards or Green in Free Agency, move Baker to DE, re-sign Dumervil, and our defense is much improved.

          Baker Fields Green/Edwards

          Doom DJ Davis Ayers

          Champ Dawkins McBath Goodman

DT's are notorious for not having an immediate impact when coming into the league. Almost all of them take a year or 2 to develop. There is always exceptions to the rule, but rarely. If Denver drafts Dan Williams, don;'t expect to see much of him his rookie year and expect the Dan Williams is a bust threads to start by Week 6.........

I won't be saying he is a bust by week 6, but i do think he is a bit overrated. Maybe this man crush for him will calm down like it has with Iupati.

... would you consider it OK to draft a DL?

Torrell Troup. I'm telling you guys, he will be gone by the end of the 3rd. Lets snatch him and move Baker to RDE

I don't think he was suggesting DT's shouldn't be drafted in the first round. I think he was suggesting Denver fans don't have the patience for them to develop.

What is the obsession with all these nose tackles? Did Fields play so horribly?

No, he didn't. He played quite well, actually.
