  • (BLOG SPECULATION) Scheffler and St. Louis

So I saw this on Roto, then checked their source and it is just a Q&A and the writer making a suggestion rather than STL actually interested. But I am sure this will hit GD and they will all go ape ****......

Beat writer Jim Thomas suggests the Rams could have interest in trading for Broncos restricted free agent TE Tony Scheffler.

Scheffler is a top pass-catching tight end, but he just didn't fit in Josh McDaniels' offense. His skills are a better match for Pat Shurmur's West Coast system, and the Rams are in dire need of a playmaker at tight end. Now in McDaniels' doghouse, he could probably be had for a mid-round pick.

    Source: St. Louis Post-Dispatch

    Related: Rams

Playmaker: Do you know if the Rams are interested in a trade to aquire TE Tony Scheffler for the Broncos? He had some good years in Mike Shanahan's West Coast System, he has good speed, and has a good yards per catch avg for his career (13.7). I think he would be a great addition to the Rams.

Jim Thomas: If they're not, they should be. For whatever reason Scheffler and McDaniels didn't click, but people I talk to in Denver, say Scheffler isn't a problem player. I think Denver wants to move Scheffler nonetheless, and probably would take less than the second rounder he would fetch with an original tender as a second-round draft pick.

If we got their 4th round pick I would be ecstatic. But this is just a St Louis sports writer having a mancrush because one of you Tony Scheffler lovers poured honey in his ear at the local pub.

Tony Scheffler is a very good pass catching TE. He is worth more than a 4th. We don't use TE's in this offense. Someone is going to get a steal with this guy. It is a shame.

Looking at draft trends, majority of TE coming from college can't block. period.

If the TE coming out can block then that is all he did and he can't catch. period.

The TE that are somewhat balanced come out usually mid/low round 1.

The either/or TE start coming out in round 2 (Usually pass catchers, unless you are **** Quinn).

Now we have to factor in the RFA rules. Tony Scheffler was drafted in the 2nd round of 2006 draft.

RFA rules allow teams to give a 2nd round player the lowest tender and if any team signs that player they have to give compensation to other team in the round the player was drafted.

Which means if a team signs Tony Denver gets a 2nd round pick. There is no way around this.

$1.176 million (RFA Original Pick compensation) for that year compared to a first or second round pick where signing bonus would need to be included is a steal.

But, again there is the injury history, and the fact Denver doesn't want him. Teams may wait for Denver to cut him. Or Denver could ask Tony to sign the tender so they can trade him. Denver in reality could start the bidding at a 4th rounder and possibly end up with a 2nd rounder.

This only applies if they try to pick him up off tender if its a straight up trade all bets are off. broncos can trade him for whatever they want...Oh by the way I answered a few of your questions/concerns in my mock.

If a team doesn't wanna fork over a 2nd for Scheffler, then Denver will have to wait till he signs his tender or cut him. Either way I wouldn't expect any compensation from him for this years draft.

Remember, all it takes is ONE team.... I mean, if this year is uncapped (then the threat looms of a possible strike/lockout in 2011). Ergo, a team who covets Scehffler's services takes a major gamble. More likely Scheff is stuck in DEN until 2012 season then he would be cut.

I could see the Rams giving DEN their 3rd round pick (basically like a late 2nd) if they're interested in TS. Then again, it all depends on what they do at QB- do they trade for VICK? If so, that would impact a possible move here.

Vick could use a weapon like TS, but if they spend a pick on him they wont have much to offer DEN.

              Stay tuned.

4th rounder for Scheff from STL would be excellent.

I know right?! It's not like he has health issues or declined, he was like Royal, this year he didn't get used, I dont get how we didn't use 3 of our most explosive and gifted dudes: Scheff, Hillis, and Royal.... .....

Mc-D will learn from this when he trades em for ex Pats or drafts nobodies

Hillis is FAR from explosive, and most definitely not "gifted"

You can make cases for Royal and Scheffler, but definitely NOT hillis

Have you put Scheffler's numbers from 09' up against his previous two years? His numbers last year weren't much different than they were under Shannahan. Well, atleast last year he could be found ocassionally blocking.

He was never more than a 3rd or 4th option under Shannahan, and wasn't the starting TE either. He's a role player. He's a pass catching TE that is used ocassionally to exploit certain coverages.

It amazes me how people put Scheffler on a pedestool because he's had a few good games in 3 years.

Royal is a 100% McD guy, doubtful he gets traded, he said in his season-ending presser, he'll get the ball to Royal next year. Scheffler is a good pass catching tight end at best. I dont get the love for Hillis on this board.

Does anyone else see the possibility of Scheffler getting traded to Cincinnati or at least why they would have interest in him (if any)
