I know I went a little Offensive heavy, but I still believe we have a great defensive makeup. I believe our Offense needs more help but that is my opinion. Here is what I think we should do in the Offseason.
Cut/Retired/Do not pursue
Ben Hamilton) Should definitely take the Matt Lepsis approach and go out on a bad season knowing he used to be a HELL of a lot better than this past year.
Jarvis Moss) Never produced and can’t get on the field here in Denver. Cut him and see if he can fit in Chicago where tragedy struck their speed end.
Kenny Peterson) Just because you were buddies in High School with the Head Coach doesn’t mean you can play like you did last year and still have a roster spot this year.
Mitch Berger) I’m really sure we could have found a better punter out there. I mean Jay Feeley punted better in the playoffs!
Chris Simms) This is one of the signings I never agreed with prior to the season, dumb move by paying him as much as the Broncos did. Slap in the face of Orton to if they don’t resign him.
Brandon Stokley) I’m pretty much doing write up’s next to each player to validate my excuse to cut Brandon Stokley. He is on a pretty big contract and he should have seen the field a lot more, this past season. I’m just not willing to pay 1.4 million for his services when we could have a rookie get experience for cheap.
Spencer Larson) He is not a true fullback and I see us cutting him.
Casey Wiegmann) Offer Veteran minimum to play backup, if not let him go.
Tyler Polumbus) Doesn’t deserve explanation.
Lamont Jordan
Vernon Fox
Brandon Gorin
Resign/Tender/Franchise
Andra Davis) Played great last year, especially early. I would give him the same deal we gave Haggan.
Vonnie Holliday) Hopefully he comes back for another year, and it is with the Broncos. He was very productive later in the season.
Le Kevin Smith) We traded for him, might as well sign him up for a 2-4 year deal as a backup.
Ty Law) Obviously a solid player still, but also a sheriff for McDaniels. If he comes back it would be nice, but his resigning or not, Alphonso Smith should get more playing time next year.
Kyle Orton) 3 year 22 million dollar contract. Something comparable to Derek Anderson’s contract, where the first and last year are loaded, but the second year is definitely reasonable. He did well this year, not great, but it was his first year in this offense. Play calling hurt him too.
Brandon Marshall) 6 years 58 million dollar contract. The guy has performed at a high level and has acted professionally throughout this year. I might be one of the only people who believe this, but I do feel he has changed and he should be priority number one in our resigning.
Elvis Dumervil) Franchise him. He is nowhere near the type of complete player Harrison is. He is a character guy who led the NFL in sacks. I’m still not as high on him as others and I don’t think any team in the NFL would trade a 1st and 3rd for him. I could be wrong, but I don’t feel we should sign him to a multi-year deal without having seen him perform one more year in a 3-4. If he doesn’t balance out his game we should explore options next year.
Chris Kuper) Tender him with a second round pick. If a team bites, that would be awesome. If not, great. Win/win in my opinion. We get a mediocre guard at a mediocre price. I think we all know we will be drafting some guards/center this year.
Tony Scheffler) slap him with lowest tender with intentions on moving him during draft.
Free Agency
These are all players I would like for us to pursue, granted I know we are not signing all of these guys, but I would be excited if we are even in the running for these guys.
Kevin Mawae) This is far-fetched, but would be amazing if we could get him for the rest of his career.
Stephen Neal) Probably don’t have a shot at him, but another guard used to McDaniel’s system would be nice.
Troy Williamson) Has been plagued with dropping the ball his whole career, but really shined in the preseason last year before he was injured with the Jaguars. He would also give us a solid return man, and someone to bring in to battle for a WR spot. He is a burner.
Tyler Brayton) Let him come back to Colorado and finish his career here and see how he does as a 5 technique given his size and pass rush ability for his size.
Karlos Dansby) I know a lot of people feel that he would not be a great pick up because he is too expensive, but I put him on this list only if we deal Dumervil. I would just like us to show interest in him.
Jarvis Green) Another ex-patriot who would be great in a position we are severely lacking in.
I know we aren’t going to get all of these players but I would be very happy if we got 2 of these guys in Free Agency.
The Draft
First round pick 10/11) Jimmy Clausen QB Notre Dame. There are 6 people who interest me at this pick; Dan Williams, Rolando McClain, Dez Bryant, Jimmy Clausen, CJ Spiller and Jared Odrick. I believe 3 of the first 4 listed will be taken earlier than our selection. With much of the hype fading around Jimmy Clausen and his toe injury that will not allow him to workout at Combine and Pro-day, I believe him to be available at pick 10/11. Many are going to disagree, but I just don’t see him climbing up the boards without having done anything to raise his stock. I mean the biggest negative thing I have heard about Clausen has been his abrasive/egotistical personality. The only thing he is going to be able to do at the combine is interview. With that I don’t believe he goes in the top 10 as of right now.
With that being said I believe he should be the future QB of the Broncos. I think he is a great player, who takes care of the ball. Played in a pro-style offense, been coached by Charlie Weis and QB guru Steve Clarkson. I was higher on Mark Sanchez, and I don’t believe Clausen can come in and start year one, but I think Orton would give us two good years to play at a high level and groom our future QB.
Second round pick 45) Demaryius Thomas WR Georgia Tech. I believe many teams are very happy now that Thomas can’t work out at Combine or Pro-day. He is most likely out of the first round and now a possibility he might fall to the third. I think we pull the trigger on him in the second to ensure we get him. He is a big threat because of his size and alleged sub 4.4 speed(according to his agent of course), but I believe he would be a weapon for years to come.
-------TRADE-------
Denver Packages in their 4th round pick next year, Tony Scheffler and Wesly Woodyard for the Rams 3rd round pick this year. Wesley Woodyard played good for us at times, and makes plays. But he is not an ideal LB….especially for a 3-4. I would like to keep him around on Special Teams, but I would rather have Josh Barrett take his place as a Big Nickle CB/S/LB. I really think Josh Barrett is one of the most under-utilized players we have on our roster. I also feel Woodyard is a starting WILL in the league. If this was the Broncos 5-10 years ago he would have been awesome.
Third round pick 65) Alex Carrington/Corey Wooten/ Tyson Alualu/Arthur Jones. I would be happy with any one of these guys on the roster next year. We need a legit contender to start next year at the 5 technique End position and I believe any of these guys could fill that need. But I do like them in the order I put them in.
Third round pick 80) Myron Rolle S Florida State. This in my eyes is a “McDaniel’s type of player.” I believe he could play either safety, and upon being drafted will be one of the most intelligent players in the League. I believe Darcel McBath outplayed Renaldo Hill last year and should be given the starting job next year. I would love our Safeties to be comprised of Dawkins, Barrett, Bruton, McBath and Rolle.
Fourth round pick pick 111) Eric Olsen C Notre Dame. We need help at Center and Interior linemen. I was very impressed with his initial push off the ball. With 1-2 years under Kevin Mawae(still crossing my fingers hoping we get him) he could be a very solid center in the future.
---------Trade--------
Broncos trade Peyton Hillis and Renaldo Hill for the Redskins 5th round pick 123.
Fifth round pick 123) Brandon Carter G Texas Tech. I really like this guy. I mean he would be the guy to work his ass off the first couple years, giving everything he has to perform to the best of his abilities. I don’t think he is a long term solution, but at 6’7 345 I don’t think Moreno would have a problem converting those 4th and 1’s running behind Carters.
Sixth round pick) Brandon James RB Florida. Change of pace back that is undersized but could also help out in return game. Explosive and would give us a better average starting spot, while not tiring Eddie Royal and possible allow him to have a bigger role on offense than just special teams.
Seventh round pick) Will Barker T Virginia. Started at RT the past two years. Not as talented as other Virginia tackles, but still started on the 2008 team that was the best in the ACC in sacks allowed. I think will be a better prospect than Tyler Polumbus.
