Anthems and Protests ---
While we certainly understand the frustration by fans on all sides of the discussion, we have decided to keep the Broncos Country message boards separate from politics. Recent events have brought the NFL to the forefront of political debates, but due to the highly emotional and passionate discussion it tends to involve, we think it’s best to continue to keep politics and this forum separate. Yes, the forum is meant for discussion, but we’d like to keep that discussion to football as much as possible.
With everything going on in our country, it would be nice to keep our complaints and cheers purely related to football here. If you feel passionately, there are plenty of other outlets available to you to express your opinions. We know this isn’t the most popular decision, but we ask that you respect it.
Thank you for understanding.

It is pretty much a forgone conclusion that Brandstater will be gone by the start of the regular season. My question is why would we release him? I say give him some playing time in the preseason to leave him out there for scouts from other teams to evaluate. Maybe we could get a 4th from a team like San Francisco, if Alex Smith doesn't show up in TC, or Buffalo since they didn't get a QB in the draft or free agency.

Thoughts.
Why can't he run the practice squad?

i think well keep him till after the pre season and if he deosnt perform great over the pre season he may be cut before the start of the regular season
Why would you waste a spot on the practice squad when if someone wants him they could just have him and not give up anything. I also think that if you have a roster with 4 QBs there will be an odd man out and Tom is that guy face it Orton is the incumbent, Quinn is the back-up and Tebow is the preject. Tom is gone and I say we get something for him instead of letting him rot on the practice squad.

What do you mean by "get something for him"? Are you suggesting he has trade value?
Brandstater has no trade value. It's extremely unlikely any other team will pick him up off waivers when we waive him at the end of preseason. He'll be on our practice squad this year, and will be our 3rd QB next season after Orton leaves via free agency.

If he plays well in the preseason and Alex Smith or any of the Bills QBs underperform I think we maybe be able to get something and that is better than nothing.

How much playing time do you see him getting during the preseason? The two backups ahead of him are much more talented, are both in their first season with the team, and will get most if not all of the playing/development time during the preseason. I wouldn't be shocked if Brandstater doesn't see the field during preseason.
You would think the hand writing is on the wall, but only Josh knows what he is thinking. I could make cases for keeping Tom and I could make cases for not keeping Tom.
I think Denver remembers last year when they had two QB injuries during preseason and it looked like Tom might have to be the starter. They were quite high on Tom and Josh keeps saying he is high on Tom.
May be they will keep 4 QB's out of injury fears. Ortin and Quinn both had substantial injuries last year. Quinn says his injury is coming along fine, but his kind of injury is know for being a long term problem. I don't know if he is considered 100% yet. I think it is more complicated than you think.
I think another thing that might be in Tom's favor is he is the only other option QB besides Tebow. Tom played option QB in high school and is good at handing off the ball. Like I said, I'm not so certain as to how cut and dried it is.
There is absolutely no way we get a 4th rounder for him unless he lights it up like crazy in the pre-season. And if that happens, we'll probably just release Quinn.

If you were trying to get something, Orton or Quinn would be the persons who you could possibly get something for. However if teams thought you were going to cut them anyway, they probably would gamble on the cut unless they were real desperate.
The 49ers might well look at Tom as a third string backup. I've heard there current 3rd string backup is weak.
IF McDaniels and company are as high on Brandstater as they say they are, I think he would warrant a PS spot. Sadly, I think the writing is on the wall for Orton and I highly highly doubt he will be retained after next season.
That being said, it will open up the 3rd string spot in 2011. Why bring in and train a new grunt on the system when you have a guy that can already run it on the cheap?
Eventually Quinn will bolt town as Tebow is the clearly the future at this point. Now Brandy becomes number two on the charts. Again, why train a retread when you have a guy you drafted and knows the playbook inhouse already?
He doesnt have any real trade value, will probably get next to no snaps in the preseason, so there isnt a huge risk that anyone will sign him off the PS.
This keeps him on the roster and available as the 3rd stringer for 2011 and beyond and is just additional insurance should something happen to Orton, Quinn or Tebow.
